I read a very interesting article how an electrical engineer from Australia modded up his Prius into a new-age hot rod with new electric motor/gen, control units and batteries. It's probably the fastest Prius in the world.

You can view the article here: [www.siliconchip.com.au]

You can only read the beginning of the article for free, you actually have to buy the whole online issue for AU$8.80 (US$4.65 approx)

Wait. That's a US Mail Prius. He uses a low-to-the-ground car with an automatic transmission to deliver mail? Even with a hypothetical foot of snow on the ground?

Hope to God his route doesn't leave the main roads, and even that's a bit concerning, as Massachusetts has a "fuck it, don't bother" attitude when it comes to road maintenance.

    ...wait, what?

People are commending him for trying to his house off one of those inverters you plug into your cig lighter?

And he thinks he's a freakin genius for it?

Sure, that's fine in a pich, but anyone care to inform this guy how much energy he's wasting compared to more thought-out solutions?

This is the good kind of Prius owner. More smart, less smug.

I do not need a Prius since I have a wood-burning stove, a hand crank radio, a billy club should anyone think that the house is vacant, flashlights, and a sleeping bag.

...and in other news, Toyota is experiencing record end-of-year sales mostly attributed to outselling its entire prius inventory practically overnight. Experts are baffled...

    HA-HA!

When the next big hurricane hits and I'm sitting in my apartment drinking cold beers in comfort, I'll be the one laughing then!

Not that anyone really laughs outside of the Commentariat, but I'll take my wins where I can get them.

And the last graph too no less?

Dude, jealousy is an ugly emotion!

Mad props to the man from Harvard, Mass. for having the knowledge and using it.

What would be even more awesome, is giving nice big federal tax incentives to install a batterypack/generator (natural gas, propane, diesel, wind, solar) subsytem in all houses, so that the Grid would be more flexible.

Sounds pretty awesome. However, did he seriously run his refrigerator? Why not just put the food outside in the snow?

@FredicvsMaximvs: Apparently, in extreme cold, refrigerators actually keep the food inside from freezing.

Of course, where I'm from, "extreme cold" means it's somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees outside, so...

@A strolling player got SMACKed: That's, uh, why you have an enclosed porch that stays at least 30 degrees because of the heat leaking out of the house.

We pulled through it pretty damn well, actually, except for our fish.

The whole point of snow storms is for people to have nothing to do but get in bed and reproduce. Getting your Prius to power the TV thus defeating Mother Nature's grand scheme o' things? FAIL.

I read in Mother Earth News about a guy that did something similar, powering small 12v lights and a radio in his remote cabin from the batteries in his truck. He'd installed a couple of extras and his regular longish drive brought them back up to full power. And since he was only trying to run a couple of small lights and a little radio, it never pulled that much to start with.

That was in the 80's, so much has changed and yet so much still works out the same.

This still isn't enough to make me want a Prius. If you need juice for your woodstove fan, there's awesome Stirling engine ones to be found. Stove gets hot, fan works: simple!
