<![CDATA[1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu, Plus Bonus Evil Chevy Poll]]> Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. How about a Chevelle with the super-rare Roofer Option Package?

I'm still not quite sure what you're supposed to call the Malibu from this era, whether the preferred nomenclature is "Chevy Malibu" or "Chevy Chevelle Malibu." The Malibu was just a trim level for the Chevelle in '67, but later became a model in its own right. Either way, this one is seriously mean-looking, which means we get to see how it fares against some other Evil Alameda Chevrolets.

This car was parked in front of a house undergoing a roof replacement, and the roof racks seem to be made for ladders and scaffolds. There's the usual neglected-California-car surface rust, but overall it appears to be pretty solid; no doubt this much-sought-after two-door will evade the Crusher when the current owner decides it's time to move up to a beater pickup.

OK, now let's have our poll! Here's a sampling of some of the Evil Chevy cars we've seen down on the Alameda street (sorry, truck fans, cars only). Vote for your favorite!

<![CDATA[24 Hours Of LeMons Arse Freeze-A-Palooza Über Gallery: The General's Troops]]> You naysayers who want to claim that the Geo Metro is really a Suzuki can go away now, because we say a GM car- albeit a Honda-powered one- won this race! The rest of the GM field was far from Camaro-only, which is always good to see; nothing against Camaros, mind you, but they've been pretty numerous in LeMons events and it's good to see more GM variety.

The winner! Not much more needs to be said here, but we'd like to point out that the Metro Gnome's best lap of 1:36.298 was only the 12th-best of the race. That's right, consistency (and a 10-lap bonus, awarded by judges who felt sure that chain would snap) wins this race!

This car was moments from winning the SF '08 race when the fuel pump failed. Here's more proof that you don't need to be fast to do well in a LeMons race; just stay out of trouble and don't break parts and you can win. This time around, the Spirit Of San Diego cruised to a solid 7th-place finish, which should give you 305 drivers some ammunition in your debates with the 350 guys.

Sure, this car spun out quite a bit, but Team Unsafe At Any Speed added greatly to our enjoyment of the race. The best lap time was 1:54.807, which wasn't so quick, but they beat nearly half the other teams in the lap totals with their 54th-place finish.

We can't find any photos of the incident- which apparently took place on the back side of the hill- but the super-veteran Cavalier finally ended its racing career with a rollover. No injuries, and we're hoping the ONSET guys will be back with that Cimarron they've been threatening to buy.

<![CDATA[Audi Q5 Spied Enjoying The Sights And Sounds Of Malibu]]> A reader over at the Burlapp Car Page snapped a photo of a completely unmasked 2009 Audi Q5 in Malibu basking in the warm glow of the brilliant Pacific sun. We assume this is an early tester out measuring how many and what kind of Jamba Juice containers will fit in the cupholders. Though the Audi Q5 leans a bit heavy on the jellybean looks, when it lands in America it should be motivated by a turbocharged inline-four mated to the twin-clutch 7-speed steptronic transmission out of the 2009 Audi A4, allowing it to run circles around your neighbors Lexus RX. <![CDATA[2008 Chevy Malibu Refuses to be Ignored, Tops J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey]]> The Car You Knew America Could Build (but wish they would have about 15 years ago) has just added another trophy to its collection. The 2008 Chevy Malibu received top honors in the mid-size car category of this year's J.D. Power (and his various associates') Initial Quality Survey, beating out the fugly Mitsubishi Galant and GilletteFord Fusion, ranked second and third, respectively.

For those of you keeping score, that's 30 awards the new Bowtie has racked up since launch, and someone seems to be paying attention: A local dealer friend of ours here in the D says he can't get enough Malibus to sell. Whadda ya want? Ya want 'em quick, or you want 'em right?

<![CDATA[2008 Chevy Malibu, Transformed, Rolling Out...As A Chinese Police Car]]> Sure, the 2008 Chevy Malibu's selling better than the last model, but it's still an orgasm of mid-size mediocrity like everything else in the class of cars that include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Ford Fusion. Sure, the Nissan Maxima may be somewhat sporty, but nobody's going to confuse it with a GT-R anytime soon. But, it looks as though the latest car-star to hit the big screen in the next Transformers movie's going to be none other than the General's budget brand's middling mediocregasm. True, this Malibu's decked out in all sorts of fancy Chinese characters, so we're expecting it to play less of a transforming role and more of a background role as Transformers 2 begins filming in Bethlehem, PA. But whatever, let's not take too much away from this be-stickered new Malibu. We're sure he's already feeling envious of his Chevy brother picking up all that hot robogasmic action, no sense in beating his already battered self-esteem any further. One more shot of the not-so-much-transforming 2008 Chevrolet Malibu after the jump.

<![CDATA[Don't Count Out Detroit: Chevy Finishes Second At LeMons!]]> Last October, the highest-placed Detroit car at the 24 Hours of LeMons Altamont race was the Spirit of San Diego '81 Chevy Malibu, grabbing a not-too-shabby 20th place. This time around, minus the fins and plus some mean-looking black paint, a good ol' American V8/rear-drive machine has left all them furrin cars (save one) eating Detroit exhaust, as the Chevrolet drivers finished a mere three laps behind the #1 car. We're not sure what they changed (though the Malibu does appear to have wider, lower-profile rubber now), but it sure worked! By the way, I'm still working on the traditional Top 50 Cars and Über Gallery LeMons posts; you'll get 'em soon.

<![CDATA[2009 Opel Insignia Revealed, Officially]]> The General's German brand saw the sign it needed to replace the aged Vectra, so they opened up their eyes — and came up with this — the new 2009 Opel Insignia. It's a new name, a new car and yes, a new badge for the brand preciously misspelled from the name of a gem and it's being revealed in July at the London Motor Show. We're guessing Opel decided to drop this load of shots and details early due to, you know, all the leakage everywhere — both manufactured, silly and otherwise. This new Vectra-replacing four-door will hit the market with a pickup truck-like selection of engine options and powertrains. Buyers of the new Insignia will be able to choose from seven different engines — four gasoline engines ranging from a four-banger 115 HP unit to a V6 with an output of 260 horses and three new direct-injection diesels displacing 2.0 liters and with outputs spanning from 110 to 160 HP. And when you're done choosing your boring engines, you'll have a choice between either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. What else would we expect from a four-door that's 7.9 inches longer than the current Vectra and is built on the General's new globe-spanning Epsilon II platform. Of course we'd expect a variety of available options — this sculpted boat's going to need to play the role of like, every car in GM's multi-brand lineup. And that's why we should care about this new Euro sedan — because everything else with an Opel badge gets sent state-wide as a Saturn, so we're under the impression we'll be seeing this as the 2011 Saturn Aura. But the platform prostitution doesn't end there — the bones underneath will hold the skin and meat of the 2011 Pontiac G6 and the 2012 Chevy Malibu. Rumor is we'll also see it as the 2010 Buick LaCrosse and the 2010 Saab 9-3. Yes, that means the 2010 LaCrosse would actually get an AWD platform — hmm, maybe there's some life in that old brand. Yeah, right. Full press release after the jump.

Opel Insignia: A New Design Language For A New Era

* Sculpted design with a flowing coupé silhouette
* Four-wheel drive, active chassis and seven engines available at launch
* World premiere July 2008 at the London Motor Show

Rüsselsheim. A new name, a new car, a new ambition. With its groundbreaking design and sophisticated technology, the Insignia makes a quantum leap toward rejuvenating the brand and providing the perfect opportunity to discover Opel. The styling of the new 4.83 meter five-seater clearly expresses Opel's strategy to make advanced technology and attractive design affordable.

The Insignia boasts a flowing, powerful silhouette with a coupé-like roofline. The body's sculpted shape is accented by a distinctive radiator grille with a newly-designed Opel emblem. Unmistakable design elements include a sweeping front and rear light "wing" signature and a "blade" side contour that begins directly behind the front wheel and glides through the entire side of the body. Both details give the Insignia's a muscular but graceful allure.

"With Insignia we are introducing an exciting new sophisticated design vocabulary, which combines sculptural artistry with German precision," says Mark Adams, Vice President Design, GM Europe. "Our aim was to develop a confident look which compels the world to experience for themselves the superb driving dynamics the Insignia radiates."

Echoing the exterior, the interior shapes and surfaces, which articulate this promise for exciting mobility, are crafted with high quality materials. The dashboard wraps around from the instrument panel to the door in a very sophisticated way, embracing the occupants. This wing theme will be echoed across all Opels. Red ambient lighting, which also will be featured in future Opel models, vibrate a warm, luxurious aura. A lot of emphasis too has been put into the seating, which set the highest standards in ergonomics, comfort and safety.

Opel's pioneering role and unique expertise in lighting technology continues in the Insignia with the latest generation AFL Adaptive Forward Lighting system: Nine different light beam settings automatically adjust themselves to cater to various driving conditions, simultaneously enhancing safety and driving excitement. Another new element on the AFL system is the LED daytime running lights, which consume considerably less energy than a conventional system featuring halogen lamps, thereby lowering CO2 emissions from 6 g/km to nearly zero.

"As each feature demonstrates, the Insignia is the result of our quest to develop a car that combines striking design, excellent driving dynamics and innovative technology" says Hans H. Demant, Managing Director, Adam Opel GmbH.

The Insignia is offered from the start with front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The "Adaptive 4X4" system's proactive, instantaneous torque distribution not only ensures optimal traction but also enhances driving stability and dynamic handling performance. In the all-wheel drive Insignia, the FlexRide mechatronic chassis system with its Adaptive Stability Technology helps the car adjust to prevailing driving conditions and allows the driver to select settings to match his mood. FlexRide is also available in the front-wheel version.

The Insignia will launch with an exceptionally broad range of seven engines. All meet Euro 5 emissions standards and come with either manual or automatic six-speed transmissions. The four gasoline engines range from a four-cylinder 115 hp unit to a V6 with 260 hp. The three new direct-injection diesels feature a displacement of 2.0 liter and outputs spanning from 110 to 160 hp. Subsequently the Insignia engine line-up will be expanded with an EcoFLEX version offering very low CO2 emissions in addition to other, more powerful variants.

"The Opel Insignia sets new standards in technology and innovation — this will be obvious right from the launch. But we are keeping several cards up our sleeves when it comes to environmental compatibility, excitement and safety, which we will play strategically overtime" says Alain Visser, Chief Marketing Officer, GM Europe.

The Insignia notch- and hatchback will debut July 22, 2008 at the London Motor Show and hit showrooms starting in November. The Insignia was developed at GM Europe's International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, which also is home to its production. The Rüsselsheim facility is one of the most advanced car plants in the industry.

<![CDATA[Malibu, American Axle's Through With You?]]> So far the damage from the American Axle strike's been limited to the General's big slow-sellers. Although GM's idled 30 plants, for the most part they've been the trucks and SUV's. Well, except for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant which makes the Buick Lucerne and the Cadillac DTS. Oh, and also the Lordstown, Ohio plant that builds the Pontiac G5 and Chevy Cobalt. But none of those sell really fast off dealer lots anyway — so the strike's been sort of a non-event to this point. But wait, the Detroit News thinks there's trouble brewing down the road for a car that's selling like hotcakes. Well, if hotcakes were cars and spent 18 days under the warming lights of the IHOP before you bought them.

But we digress, it seems the Malibu may be the next threatened product in the General's stable. Although American Axle doesn't actually provide any parts for the better-than-average selling sedan, they apparently do supply parts to other suppliers supplying parts — specifically, as Automotive News is reporting, rear suspension knuckles. And apparently they'll not be having enough of those rear suspension knuckles — in who knows how long. But whenever, or if, that does happen, it could be a very bad thing and not only because this entire story is now making us think of that damn Buick-hating Eve 6 song. But wait, what's that you say? It's actually "rendezvous" they're singing? Yes, well, it's so easy to plug "Malibu" in for the Buick piece of shit the song's not actually about. Confused? Yeah, we are too — which is why we all now get to inhabit the private hell that is this song. (Hat tip to Kevin!) [Detroit News]

<![CDATA[1971 Chevrolet Malibu]]> We've only seen a couple of Chevelles so far on this series (a '68 coupe and a '69 wagon). Oh, sure, we wouldn't argue with anyone who made the case that the '72 El Camino is technically a Chevelle, but in any case the classic '64-'72 Chevy A-bodies have been scarce here, especially considering how many were made. We'll add one more today, with this 4-door '71.

71_Malibu_Emblem.jpgWhen this car was made, "Malibu" was just an optional trim level available on the Chevelle; it didn't become a model in its own right until later on. The standard engine for '71 was the lackluster 307, though this car may well be on its 15th powerplant by now; small-block Chevy engines might as well have Velcro mounts, given how often they get swapped around.

71_Malibu_Rr_RH.jpg
This example drives every day and parks on one of the island's busier streets. It looks to be in pretty solid original condition.

Well, original except for the Camaro wheels, that is. The mix-n-match Chevy wheels game is fun for everyone!

<![CDATA[GM Wants You To Buy A Malibu, Can't Sell You One]]> We've all seen the ads for the new Chevy Malibu touting it as GM's long awaited savior, a "super accord" and the ultimate Camry fighter, et cetera. And with a 100% increase in in Malibu sales in December, the advertising campaign might be working. There's only one little problem: there aren't enough Malibus to satisfy demand. And to make things worse, there are lots full of new Accords and Camrys for people who don't want to wait until the spring to get one.

As keeper-of-the-GM Deathwatch Robert Farago said, "They created demand, and there's no cars to satisfy it. That's fine if it's an iPhone or a niche vehicle like a Toyota Prius, but not for a mass-market vehicle." GM must bank on customers being so taken with the new bowtie that they'll wait a couple of months. [Marketing Daily]

<![CDATA[Project Car Hell, Repo Man Edition: J. Frank or Bud?]]> For the first time in Project Car Hell history, yesterday saw a Porsche lose a challenge against a non-Porsche! For today, I was going to reach into the PCH Mailbag and pull out one of the excellent tips y'all have been sending in, but then it happened: I was walking down Howard Street in San Francisco earlier today and I was thinking about how my Civic is due for a new timing belt, and how I should probably do the job this weekend, and then I started this internal mental debate about timing chains versus belts and that reminded me of my friend Andrew and how he got stranded in the middle of rural Alabama when the timing chain in his '66 Malibu ate all the teeth on the crank sprocket... and then I stopped at the crosswalk and a vintage Malibu drove past: Plate O' Shrimp Moment! So, you see, it goes without saying that we must now have a Repo Man-themed Project Car Hell.

When you're talking cars from Repo Man, you're more or less required by law to start the discussion by bringing up J. Frank Parnell's '64 Chevy Malibu, with its trunkload of deadly cargo. Fortunately for those wishing to build their own replica of this car, J. Frank's Malibu was a four-door six-cylinder machine, which means you can get them pretty cheaply. For example, this 1964 Chevrolet Malibu 4-door (go here if the ad disappears) for just $900. Give it a paint job, put some pecan pies in the back and a bright light in the trunk, don your single-lensed sunglasses, and you'll be paying heavy-duty homage to one of the best car movies of all time! This one probably needs a fair bit of mechanical work to get to that point (the seller claims it's just a distributor cap), and we can assume there's rust, but it's cheap and simple- how bad can it be?

You figure everyone and his brother is going to go for the Malibu when putting together a Repo Man homage car, but maybe you want to be a little different. You could go with Duke's 1978 Corolla, or maybe the Government Agents' 1971 Matador, but: Harry Dean Stanton! Not only did Stanton play Bud in Repo Man, he played a hitchhiker in Two Lane Blacktop (which may well be the best car movie of all time), plus there's his unforgettable "AVENGE ME!" line from the ultimate Cheezy 80s Flick, Red Dawn. Thus, you need to pick up this here 1971 Chevrolet Impala 4-door (go here if the ad disappears) and recreate Bud's ride from Repo Man! Asking price is $1500... or maybe it's $2100 (depending on whether you go by the headline or the description), but either way you'll be able to do some negotiatin' with this motivated seller. The car runs, seems to look reasonably intact, and its Arizona locale is a likely indicator that you won't find much rust. Just give it a dark blue paint job, put a big whip antenna on it, and get ready for some fast driving in the L.A. River.

<![CDATA[GM Reports an 11% Decrease in Sales for November]]> gmlogo.jpgIt was a rough November for GM, with the company reporting total sales of 263,654 vehicles, representing a drop of 11% from November 2006. Though this can be partially blamed on a planned reduction in rental fleet sales, the big news is that the General is have a rough time selling trucks, with a 14.9% year-over-year decrease in light trucks/SUV's and a 15.5% in trucks. Hummer stumbled as well, with a 30.5% year-over-year decrease. In the silver lining department, the new CTS has seen a 15% increase in sales and the Chevy Malibu is up 40% compared to last year (pushing overall Chevy car sales up 15%). None of this would have happened if they'd have landed the Knight Rider gig. The full report below the jump:

GM Reports 263,654 November Deliveries; Retail Car Deliveries Up

* Chevrolet Malibu Retail Sales Up 40 Percent; Chevy Cars Up 15 Percent
* All-New CTS Drives 15 Percent Cadillac Car Sales Increase
* Enclave, OUTLOOK and Acadia Crossovers Post Strong Retail Sales
* Dealer Inventories Down 97,000 Vehicles Year-Over-Year
* Planned Daily Rental Sales Reduction of 28.5 Percent

DETROIT - After three consecutive monthly increases, GM dealers in the United States delivered 263,654 vehicles in November, down 11 percent compared with a year ago, reflecting continuing reductions in daily rental sales and softening industry demand.

GM's retail car deliveries increased, based on the strength of the all-new Chevrolet Malibu, 2008 Cadillac CTS and fuel-efficient Chevrolet Aveo, Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and G6.

"Integral to our strategy is to grow our share in the key car segments. The retail performance, especially from the new Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac CTS, demonstrates the enthusiasm customers have for these outstanding new vehicles," said Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "The recognition of the 2008 CTS as Motor Trend's Car of the Year reinforces what we are hearing from customers about this phenomenal car. And, not to be outdone, the new Malibu is flying off dealer lots."

There were several bright spots in retail deliveries, led by brisk sales in the economy, small, mid and luxury car segments and mid-utility crossovers. Chevrolet retail car sales were up more than 15 percent, Cadillac retail car sales, driven by a 48-percent increase in CTS sales, were up more than 13 percent and Pontiac retail car sales were up more than 8 percent. Total retail deliveries were down 9.7 percent, largely due to reduced availability of 2007 models after a strong sell-down in September and October.

"The Malibu, CTS and Enclave have some of the fastest turn rates in the industry," LaNeve added. "We've added production capacity at our Orion Assembly plant for Malibu to keep up with growing demand and dealer orders."

Together, GM's mid-utility crossovers (Buick Enclave, Saturn OUTLOOK and GMC Acadia) sold nearly 13,000 vehicles at retail. Saturn retail truck sales, driven by the OUTLOOK, were up more than 35 percent. Chevrolet HHR retail sales were up 60 percent.

The Pontiac and GMC divisions showed retail sales increases.

GM continued to reduce sales to daily rental fleets, down more than 14,000 vehicles, or almost 29 percent compared with a year ago. Total fleet sales were down 16 percent.

Retail sales for the month, as a percentage of total sales, showed an increase of more than one percentage point (to 74 percent of total sales) compared with a year ago.

Vehicle inventories were down 97,000 vehicles compared with year-ago levels and stood at about 993,000 vehicles at the end of the month.

Quality, reliability and durability (QRD) remain key factors for customers when purchasing a new vehicle. "GM provides the best coverage in the industry. We take care of the vehicle and the owner like no other manufacturer," LaNeve added. An increasing number of consumers cite GM's willingness to stand behind its quality as a reason to buy a new GM vehicle. GM's new 5 Year/100,000 Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty continues to make GM a better choice for customers. GM's coverage focuses on the complete ownership experience and includes other provisions that competitors do not offer, including transferability to the next owner, more complete coverage of parts, and coverage for new and certified used vehicles. In addition, GM offers superior complementary programs, such as courtesy transportation and roadside assistance.

Certified Used Vehicle Sales

November 2007 sales for all certified GM brands, including GM Certified Used Vehicles, Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, were 37,946 vehicles, down nearly 11 percent from last November. Total year-to-date certified GM sales are 479,946 vehicles, up 0.3 percent from the same period last year.

GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling manufacturer-certified used brand, posted 32,748 sales, down 10 percent from last November. Year-to-date sales for GM Certified Used Vehicles are 421,190 vehicles, up 2 percent from the same period in 2006.

Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles posted November sales of 3,227 vehicles, down 9 percent from last November. Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 1,372 vehicles in November, up nearly 2 percent. Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 468 vehicles, down 54 percent, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 131 vehicles, up 17 percent.

"While November was a challenging sales month for certified GM brands, year-to-date GM Certified Used Vehicle sales are up 2 percent through November and we're in a position to set a new industry annual sales record for the manufacturer-certified category," said LaNeve.

GM North America Reports November 2007 Production, 2007 Fourth-Quarter Production Forecast Revised at 1.025 Million Vehicles, 2008 First-Quarter Production Forecast Set at 950,000 Vehicles

In November, GM North America produced 366,000 vehicles (134,000 cars and 232,000 trucks). This is up 5,000 units or 1 percent compared to November 2006 when the region produced 361,000 vehicles (148,000 cars and 213,000 trucks). (Production totals include joint venture production of 22,000 vehicles in November 2007 and 20,000 vehicles in November 2006.)

The region's 2007 fourth-quarter production forecast is revised at 1.025 million vehicles (350,000 cars and 675,000 trucks), up 25,000 units or 3 percent from last month's guidance. Additionally, the region's initial 2008 first-quarter production forecast is set at 950,000 vehicles (344,000 cars and 606,000 trucks), down 113,000 vehicles or 11 percent from first-quarter 2007 actuals. <![CDATA[General Motors to Send Hybrids to Middle East]]> The General is very happy to announce that it'll be exporting some of its two-mode Tahoes and Malibu to the Middle East; the Middle East is happy to announce that it doesn't want them and is sending them back (j/k). The Dubai Roads & Transit Authority will be taking possession of the vehicles to use as fleet cars and cabs as part of a test program. The great thing about hybrids is they only slow our dependence on oil in the Middle East, making sure we'll care about them forever. We're actually not being fair to Dubai, which only receives less than 3% of its annual revenues from natural gas and petroleum. The hilarious press release below the jump:

General Motors and Government of Dubai to Bring Hybrids to the Middle East

Dubai, UAE - General Motors and Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced today an agreement for an evaluation program that will bring hybrid vehicles to the Middle East. The agreement, which includes a comprehensive local market evaluation of GM's all-new Chevrolet Tahoe Two-Mode Hybrid and the all-new Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, could eventually lead to one of the largest fleets of hybrid vehicles in the world.

The accord is groundbreaking because it demonstrates the common goal of General Motors, Dubai RTA and the Government of Dubai to reduce their impact on the environment - even in a region that is rich in oil-resources.

The agreement was signed by His Excellency Matar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board & Executive Director of the RTA and Terry Johnsson, President of General Motors Middle East Operations, in the presence of Engineer Essa Al-Dosary, CEO Public Transportation Agency, Engineer Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO Dubai Taxi, and a number of department directors and officials from RTA and General Motors.

Maureen Kempston Darkes, GM Group Vice President and President of GM Latin America, Africa and the Middle East said, "We are honored that Dubai RTA selected the all-new Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and Malibu Hybrid for this program. This is further evidence that our environmental strategy goes to markets all around the world - and is truly a global effort to reduce emissions and develop sustainable transportation. These advanced technology vehicles are leaders in their automotive segments and selecting them is testimony to the visionary leadership of the Government of Dubai.

His Excellency Matar Al Tayer said that this initiative comes in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai to seek a safe, clean and attractive and sustainable environment that lives up to the reputation and prestige of the Emirate. It also comes in the framework of RTA's commitment to protect life and property, preserve the environment and natural resources, improve standards of occupational health and public safety, and implement all the necessary technologies to reduce noise levels caused by means of transportation.

The GM-RTA agreement calls for the provision of a small fleet of Chevrolet Tahoe and Malibu hybrids that will be used as limousines and taxis by RTA on the roads in Dubai. The program will last one year, beginning in January 2008. General Motors will provide technical training on safety and other aspects for 15 RTA technicians, along with training for 40 drivers of Dubai Taxi. During the program, GM and the RTA will work together to validate the vehicles for use and serviceability. The intent is for the Dubai RTA to consider the Chevrolet hybrids for its fleet plans scheduled for early 2009.

<![CDATA[WaPo Columnist Recommends Domestics, World Stops Spinning]]> The bow-tied folks at the GM Inside News Forums are giddy over a Washington Post chat that featured mild recommendations of the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS4 over the Honda Accord and Infiniti G35. The comments came from the WaPo's Warren Brown and seems to mark a new period in American automotive history, at least from the perspective of forum members. Specifically, in a live chat Brown said "... [T]he (Infiniti) G35 is quite a bargain. But I am more likely to buy the Cadillac CTS4—excellent overal perfrmance, beautiful styling, more my kind of car." Photos of the Malibu and more comments below:

He had similar comments for the Malibu, saying: "No teething problems on the new Chevrolet Malibu. I've closely watched the development of this one from beginning to end. I'm more than confident that it will do well in the marketplace buy serving its buyers well and by offering them surprising value. How confident? If you buy it and have ANY problems with it, contact me at warbro70@aol.com. I know exactly who to go to on this one." [WaPo via GM Inside News Forums]

<![CDATA[2008 Chevy Malibu Ad Campaign Also Wants To Show You How To Rob A Bank]]>
After first showing us the serious problem America has with blind joggers, the ad mavens for the General are now using the ad campaign for the new 2008 Chevy Malibu to show us the proper way to rob a bank. Apparently it has something to do with using a late 90's Oldsmobile as your getaway car — and — we're not really sure how that works.

<![CDATA[2008 Chevy Malibu Ad Campaign Seeks To Get Joggers To Pay Attention To Cars]]>
We told you last week about the new Chevy Malibu ad campaign and now we've got the first ad. The new commercials for the all-new 2008 Chevrolet Malibu appear to be based on the premise that our nations' joggers seem to be having a problem — they're unable to see cars directly in front of their eyes. They're slamming into front quarter panels and doors. This must be stopped. Either we need joggers to stop jogging or we need car companies to start building sedans that aren't boring. Hmm — guess we'll need joggers to stop jogging.
