4wd available, manual option, regular-cab so it has a decent-sized bed, it should sell.

    EDIT: Two-door with a seven-foot bed. Bravo!

Does it still have the insane payload rating? Or was that an India only feature?

@IN THE FACE!: "haul up to 2,700 pounds and tow up to 5,000 pounds." is not insane rating. Many foreign makers keep their World-wide standards for payload despite American habits to make a lot of unusable power (ex. compare Subaru Forrester towing ability and similarly sized and I4 powered Chevy Equinox spec...). Most European/Japanese 5ton box trucks are powered by sub-100hp diesel engines and work well all day long. Capacity comes from parts that are not made in a cheap and worthless way, just to be "married" to outrageously powerful engine without capacity to get full benefits from it as it is US custom.

    Suzuki isn't one of them.

The '99 Grand Vitara I had was spec'd in the UK for 1000 kg. of towing. That's a tick over 4K lbs. (!). The US rating? I think it was either 1K or 1,500 lbs., and it was taxed at that.

I'll resist ranting about US litigation and how it's so out-of-control, it's a wonder we're not told when to breathe.

    @Joe_Bloe:

My bad. It was spec'd for 1,850 kgs. I thought, when I first saw the specification, it was 1,850, which I thought was reasonable, then I saw it was kg's.

It's still early, hence the lack of logical math.

I'll have to dig up that reference on the Grand Vitara list.....

but 2700lb payload and 5k lb tow is an abnormally high rating for a vehicle this size/class by US standards isn't it?

So it needed a standard front and rear Grill guard to pass the 2.5 and 1.5mph bumper crash tests without damage. If thats how the bumpers are built, I wouldn't exactly be thrilled to experience how the rest of the truck is held together. Try again Mahindra?

@Bullitt417: I'd find it hard to believe that idling any midsize sedan into a wall would result in "no damage".

And Mahindra would be far from the first truck manufacturer to skimp on some costs - there are Tundra owners with tailgates that bend when an ATV is rolled over them, for example.

@FP: Your Volvo is awesome! Anyway:

The tailgate on my 86.5 Nissan 720 bent when I jumped on it from a loading dock...bout two feet of difference, and I was about 170 lbs. at the time.

It's all about where you put the weight. I nailed it almost dead-center, L-to-R, but too close to the top (rearmost) edge. Bummed me out, as it was the first damage on that trucklet.

I'd buy it, because all the other "small" pickups on the market are too big and no Diesel offerings.

I really do not understand the thinking that in order to have a pickup with a Diesel engine one has to buy a huge monster(Dodge 3500, Chevrolet/GMC 3500, Ford F-250). I would own a small truck with a Diesel if I could buy one.

As for the noise a Diesel engine makes, I've lived with it for a long time, coming from a 16 liter ISX. To me, it's the sound of money.

Interesting. I swear I can see some of the old Willys in it. A little too posh inside, and the engine setup is too complex for me to putter about, but it's a step in the right direction.

If I were them, I'd change their logo, though. It's a little too close to Oldsmobile, IMHO.
