I like this car, a lot. I'd take an X6M in white if I had the means.

Good God, what a bunch of whiny comments. If people are willing to buy a max performance SUV, something that can haul the family or a trailer and not get stuck in the snow... and still have a rewarding driving experience, what's the problem?

Get off of your high horses. I'm looking forward to seeing the all new Grand Cherokee's next SRT-8 version.

@Torqahontas: An X5-M is obscene, but it's still practical. This offers all the fuel economy and handling of a '5 with all the cargo capacity of a 318 Compact. If it worked for something, I might not mind it.

Plus, it's got a fat ass.

    There shouldn't be M model SUV's.

There shouldn't be SS, R/T, SRT, GT, etc., etc., SUV's.

Trucks and SUV's are to pull trailers with the M3 to the track.

Making "high performance" SUV's is like putting a ClassV receiver hitch and a trailer brake controller on an M5.

Is anyone else concerned by turbos creeping into the M lineup? Just as AMG is moving away from them, does it seem that BMW may be falling behind on engine technology?

@snapoversteer: Turbos are becoming ubiquitous in many manufacturers' lineups, not just BMW. AMG is still keeping them for some of the more powerful engines and trying to make up for the rest with sheer displacement. Besides, I wouldn't be too concerned about BMW's engine technology - go watch some videos of the (naturally aspirated!) M5/M6, if you still feel weird about it.

@Accords went nuts became a 70 Purple Barracuda: Ah, brand dilution, that magical phrase us auto enthusiasts use to lambast companies who "step out of their zone".

But let's see what some of those ventures have done for them: the X5 is one of the top picks for poseurs who want an SUV, and the Cayenne made Porsche the VW owning goliath it is today, and gave us even better 911s and Caymans and Boxsters.

BMW sure knows how to put the donk in the ba-donk-a-donk. I figure it'll be about another ten minutes before you see one of these slammed within an inch of its life by some NBA player, and then two-thirds of these trucklets are going to get fully pimped to within an inch of their ghettofabulous lives.

There are far worse choices than these two vehicles out there. I bet they're both a blast to drive. They may not be my style, but I certainly wouldn't turn on down if I were tossed the keys. Maybe a better choice for the wife, so I can have fun when I have to drive it.

BMW seems to be continuing their tradition of ridiculously long press releases, so the ePRS (US Patent No. c11077983) was activated and gives us this:

BMW's M werks used to be known for creating near supercars from BMW's line of fine road cars. Now they've gone off the reservation and hot rodded a couple of SUV's (don't argue with me, I'm the ePRS).

Both the X5 M and X6 M will be powered by the 4.4L V8 pushing 550 hp and 500 torques with pulse-tuned exhaust and twin twin-scroll turbos.

They are also outfitted with all wheel drive, or XDrive to be cool, as well as the Dynamic Performance Control system so soccer moms -- who have no reason to be in something this powerful, but who's husbands are cheating on them and feel guilty so they buy them these monstrosities even though they can barely drive the family Taurus -- don't kill the children.

This engine is cool in that it positions the turbos and the cats in the valley between the banks. Of course, this is like putting lipstick on a pig since this engine should be in the M3 and not an SUV. (I told you not to argue with me. It's an SUV, dammit, no matter what fancy-pants letters you want to put on it.)

Other features include the cliche paddle shifters. Brakes and a body are also included.

@engineerd: I don't see anything wrong with a hot rodded SUV. I didn't see this many complaints when Jeep released their Grand Cherokee SRT8.

Sounds to me like it's a bunch of pretentious fanboys getting their panties in a twist about the direction BMW has been taking.

@nhubbell84, morphing to ThreeLitre: BMW also makes lots of taxis, and its sedan penetration in its home market goes pretty down market. That's not an argument to limit them to the sector or to demand that everything they do reflect that experience.

@Alphamazing: Wow, I seem to have stirred the pot.

I'm a BMW fanboy, and as such I think that BMW has every right to build SUVs and hot rod said SUVs. My biggest beef with them is their SUVs can be kind of ugly. The first iteration of the X3 and X5 weren't too bad, but they seem to be getting bigger and more bloated.

A hot rodded SUV? Hell yeah. One of my guilty pleasures is the AMG R63. It's a freakin' minivan that gets to 60 in 4.5s.

An ugly hot rodded SUV? I'm not so sure.

I have no problem with carmakers branching into different segments, but they need to be careful and do so in a way that they keep their brand identity and brand DNA without bringing everything down with it.

Throw that engine in a sedan or coupe instead.
