Simple, because no matter how good the Speed3 is, it is and always will be a copy of the real thing. The GTI gets all the props because it has earned them. All Mazda did was take VW's props and clean them up a bit.
Sadder still is the Speed3 isn't even the most respected Mazda. It sits in 3rd place behind the much more worthy Miata and RX-8.
Sorry, but winning the Spec Sheet Grand Prix isn't worth much to real car guys and gals.

I'm thankful for these because:
-all these are available used as wagons (SUVs are just hopped up wagons to me) or hatchbacks... and in one case, a van
-available with stickshift
-you can buy used for a reasonable price... or will eventually be able to.
-are big enough for someone with two kids.

$15,000+ for a Caliber? Hell no... unless it's a SRT4... But for $5000 or less? Sure. Won't be long before that happens as I see a 5 speed 2007 Caliber going for $8000 right now.

But I can understand how people who are into real hot rods or pre-1950 old cars are put off by a FWD economy car posing in the style of an old car.
That's how many see it I think.
But I also see a very practical station wagon available with stick.
And, while they're not like Corollas, they're not bad in terms of reliability either.
And the SRT4/turbo models are apparently pretty fast.

You sound like a disgruntled European, no offense to normal Europeans. Its hard to be thankful for something that you cant get for a few years (the 500) Our muscle cars have a certain charm, just like an Alfa or a Fiat 500 have, speaking of Alfa the (standard) Mita is about as sexy as a cross-eyed pig I do like the GTA though.

I come from a land who builds proper muscle cars but the driver would sit on what you would call the wrong side. We even convert American muscle cars to right hand drive!
