    Too bad this can't be a direct-injection 1.4L TD. Then we'd get 260 torques and 65 MPG.

    It's available in Europe already, with a 2 liter turbodiesel with 150 HP. It's not very economical though, for European standards that is.

    We used to get awesome North American premieres like the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari 599 GTB and the Venturi Fétish.

    This year we get some run of the mill Chevy and a Toyota van. #laautoshow

    On the drive home from work on 476 I saw taillamps a few carlengths away and the first thing that came to mind was "Lexus." As we drew closer I realized it was actually a big, white LaCrosse. The car has Presence (with a capital P) and looks very upscale and stately in person. I thought there wouldn't be enough to distinguish the LaCrosse from the cheaper Regal, but these new images show a much sleeker, leaner-looking, more athletic sedan. I like it, and glad we're getting an only lightly-modified Insignia that, more importantly, runs on little engines instead of creaky old pushrod V6s. If they offered a diesel, I might consider one...for me mam.

    I'd say they're in their Catera phase here. Their styling is a little better, the turbo is good, but the effort comes up short. Hopefully, they'll try again in a few years, this time with more cylinders and rear wheel drive added to the mix. #buickregal

    Don't get too excited,the Vauxhall Insignia is a pretty crap car & not a patch on rivals such as the Mondeo,Accord or Passat. Don't believe the hype,yeah it's better than the Vectra it replaced,but still far from being the car of choice in its segment. #buickregal

    @Jimmie61: Not atall,try the other cars i've listed. Try reading any European car mags or websites, the Insignia is a forgettable car in every aspect. I also speak from a lifetime of being in the motortrade. #buickregal

    @layabout: To be fair, the competition that the Regal may be after (accords, camrys) are fairly forgettable as well.

    They mention TSX's and S60's but I think that's just for media value. I suspect if the Regal sells in volumes similar to the S60, it will not be a good thing. #buickregal

    @RLJ676-LS3 Commuter Car - for the environment: I know what i'm talking about & can only suggest
    you try the cars that it's in competition with,as in Europe it's just an also ran.

    Also the Vauxhall Astra sells well,& again it's not a patch on rivals from Ford,VW or Honda. Remember most people that buy cars are not enthusiasts,especially Vauxhall & Toyota drivers. The Corolla being another casing point,it sold in its millions,yet still it's dull as hell & the competition offer better alternatives.

    Again, because it isn't best FOR YOUR NEEDS doesn't mean it isn't making a lot of people quite pleased.

    People hate Corvette's, I love mine....go figure.

    One man's opinion does not make this an inferior car. For the money it will cost in the US it's competition will be very slim, unless you can buy a $26K Mondeo here and I didn't know it. #buickregal

    @RLJ676-LS3 Commuter Car - for the environment: I live in the U.K. where competition is very strong in this market segment & the Insignia just doesn't cut it against its rivals. As for your follow up comment about just believing it when you read it in the press,firstly my opinion is shared with just about every review i've read about the car in Europe & secondly i also write for a couple of car mags & websites in the U.K. So once again i want to clarify i certainly know what i'm talking about. #buickregal

    @layabout:

    We are talking about a CAR FOR THE US MARKET right? So the relevance of the Mondeo, etc as competition is pointless. Further, the price it's competing at here will be more Fusion than Mondeo, so it is not the same regardless of your self declared credentials.

    I'd like to see these middling reviews frome Europe as well.....like the car of the year, as voted by Euro journalists I thought?

    Everyone has opinions on cars, writing about them doesn't always make them more valid (see TTAC for examples). #buickregal

    @Plasma X: That's "coffin quiet" and the first question I ask when I can rangle a powertrain guy on this program is "what's the difference between this engine and the one in the Cobalt SS" because I for one want to know how easy it would be to get a Regal with 280 HP and 320 lb·ft of torque (optional GM performance stage 1 upgrade on the Cobalt). #buickregal

    @Ben Wojdyla: It's quite possible that the transmission is part or all of the reason for the "de-tune". Either because it can't take the torque, or because the engine is too high-strung.

    Most of GM's FWD transmissions have sort of low torque ratings. The only real "beefy" one was the 4T80-E that came only mated to Northstar/Aurora V8s.

    It always seemed kind of odd, since their RWD trannies are quite stout. #buickregal

    @Ben Wojdyla: When I last worked in Powertrain NVH (edit: stands for Noise and Vibration Harshness, and it was two summers ago) it was "library quiet." Unless of course it's changed or you're being clever. I like clever.

    @Ben Wojdyla: Ah, my mistake. I forgot to use the word "automatic". GM automatic FWD transmissions is what I meant.

    The Cobalt SS does not come with an automatic. Possibly because it's a "performance" car, possibly because they don't have a trans that would take the abuse (and fit the car/engine). I suspect the latter.

    Also, just to clarify, GM does not make any manual transmissions. This is why I forgot to use that wording, since to me "GM trans" is synonymous with "automatic". #buickregal

    It's certainly not going to turn any heads with a wheezy 2.0 Turbo out of the General's cheapest econorental line and styling queues straight out of Korea.

    If you want to compete with BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, etc you need to bring a hell of a lot more to the table than this. #buickregal

    @Ben Wojdyla: Question for you; since the new direct-injected 3.6l V6 in the base Camaro gets 304 hp and 29 mpg highway, why isn't GM putting that in every new car they make?

    What, no manual? Yeah, I know that almost no one would actually order one, but a stick is good way to build interest and image with enthusiasts and the car rags. And we all know how badly Buick needs to improve it's image, because calling a reasonably sporty entry-lux car "Regal" is a bad first step in drawing the interest of anyone under 65. #buickregal
