So Toyota's going to rush an undeveloped product to market for "bragging rights". What happens when the rushed-to-market charging system on the new, untested lithium-ion batteries starts causing explosions and fires? Will they blame GM?

@Mike the Dog: I don't know, if one were to follow the history of car fire related recalls, one would find that GM has, let's say, more experience than Toyota and if I were a betting man, I would bet on the Volt being more likely to try to easy-bake oven it's occupants.
@Benson2175: I was referring to the disturbing tendency of Li-ion batteries to explode with little warning when overcharged. I see that the Volt also uses Li-ion batteries, but it has been engineered to do so from the start, while the Prius' regular NiMh batteries are being hastily swapped for a Li-ion pack and rushed to market for "psychological advantage". If I had to guess which of these was more likely to end in tragedy, I'd have to guess Toyota.

This is an example why Detroit is getting it's lunch eaten by the Japanese. They're just plain getting out-hustled. So basically, Toyota heard GM has long been hard at work on a plug-in hybrid and decides to bring one to the market before them, just for bragging rights?
How is it that Toyota is so much faster at bringing new technologies to market?

US Consumers, reluctant to buy as they are right now, will still drop $40k to have an RE-EV.
But if someone gets the Plug In Prius to market before Volt... well, it'll definitely steal Chevy's thunder. (no pun intended)
