As the resident transvestite petrol head on this site, I feel I should point out that a racer girrrl always rows her own, especially in a drag race. #lexusls600h

Actually, that's both the transmission and the two primary electric motors. . . the actual "transmission" is the little planetary gear set in the center of the unit, the "Power Split Device." The fact that they can incorporate all of the hybrid drive systems into the same space as the traditional transmission bodes well for the "hybridization" of existing car designs as well as making for a much more reliable transmission as there are no clutch plates to wear or meshing and un-meshing of gears like a traditional tranny.
@skiboxing: Right, I thought Toyota's split device/hybrid synergy drive used one of the electric motor and planetary gear to act as a continuously variable transmission without any belts or V pulleys.
@ray: Lexus's LS600h L site says "Dual-stage Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT)", it doesn't say anything about the 8-speed transmission Ray Wert mentions. But the gearshift lever's gate looks complicated, maybe Lexus programmed some arbitrary shift points just to give the driver something to do. #lexusls600h
I understand, and could theoretically reproduce (with the right tools) practically every part of a working internal combustion vehicle - except transmissions. Looks like alien technology to me. #lexusls600h
@avconsumer2: Transmissions especially the new fangled automatics, DCTs and the like have always been more complex than engines (no matter how high tech) design wise and will continue to be for a while to come... #lexusls600h
I wonder how long it'll be before some idiot swipes the car to pull the transmission for the gold plating, not understanding how plating works.
Additionally, I can only imagine the fields of these there will be after being abandoned because of transmission repair cost, in about 8-15 years. #lexusls600h
@send lawyers, guns, and money: I hear you there, I rebuild all my own transmissions, that one there... I wouldn't touch it. Something tells me the labor costs would be astronomical, maybe it's the millions of parts visible with the case open. #lexusls600h

Yeah...I've had an automatic's valve body apart one time...to 'fix' (read: camouflage) a shifting problem in the V-8 Grand Cherokee I had. It properly freaked me out with the apparent maze and identical balls which fall out if you do it wrong.
I wish digital cameras had been invented by then. I mean, it all went back together, first time, no problem, but I saw it and it scared me a little.
I never want a transmission full of neutrals.... #lexusls600h
Hot tranny porn is exactly right. And that unit looks enormous, too. Of course, the front half is mostly the motors. I wonder if this is just the stunt double they bring in for the close up R-rate stuff? #lexusls600h

Saw that too, apparently it's AWD:
[en.wikipedia.org]
Which I had never heard before. So basically what we're looking at is the combined tranny and center differential. #lexusls600h

Other than the AWD portion, it looks like a similar concept to GM/Allison's "Two Mode" tranny. #lexusls600h

Gold is a worthless plating for contact like this, being soft and all.
Now, heat resistance on-the-other-hand....
