    At first I thought I'd rather just have the 4Runner than the Lexus. But then I thought I'd rather have a Pathfinder than a 4Runner. But then I like the Xterra better than the Pathfinder. But isn't the Xterra a Japanese Wrangler wannabe? Conclusion: just get a Wrangler.

    @jark: Sure, Wranglers are good, and I want one myself. But really, you'll look like a broheim, and you don't want people asking you when you last saw Dave Matthews. So you should get a Land Rover Series II.

    Why don't we get the 70 Series Cruiser like the Aussies? They are bulletproof, priced right, and crawl like mountain goats with climbing shoes on. Sure it looks like a mid 90's Mitsi Montero... but who cares! It has a snorkel!

    @bmoreDLJ: Figured. The Lexus does look almost the same as the Prado, especially the upscale Prados. Not a lot of styling similarities with the 4Runner.

    There's an incredibly boring and arcane legal argument about how to characterize "leases" like these. I'll skip the details, but the relevant questions are:

    1) Whether Lexus can make the "lease" nontransferrable (to achieve the anti-speculative effect); and
    2) What happens when a bankruptcy court (or other forum) has to rule on what the "lessee" actually owns.

    I'm sure Lexus has great lawyers who already thought of these issues, but I question whether this is a workable arrangement and whether it will have the desired effect.
