"I was looking at the asshole-hippie gauge instead of either the speedometer or the giant hill I was going down and now I am shocked that I'm going 80."
I feel like there is some test people need to fail before buying a Prius.
Get some real tires? Oh, wait, that would hurt your mileage by 2 or 3 mpg. I know that's overly snarky, but I'm simply amazed at how crappy many tires are. "Ooooh, this one has an 80,000 mile warranty!"
And the rubber compound is rated on the Mohs Scale, too.
@Strooooolling the Jalopplayer: You mean the Prius doesn't come stock with low rolling resistance tires? Seems like most every passenger car has some form of low-resistance Michelin or Continental all-season on them (in order to hit EPA numbers).
@Ash78: Well, I'm sure the OEM Goodyear Integrity's rolling resistance isn't particularly high, but it's loads better than the specially-designed Low Rolling Resistance tires that the old Prius, Insight, things like the Cobalt XFE (I believe) come with.
@Rust-MyEnemy: Honestly, I've never really seen a Prius driven in an 'economical' manner. They all drag away from the traffic lights and cruise at 70-80 MPH around here.
It's the idiots in the Corollas who are always driving slow in the left lane.
I'm horribly torn! On the one hand, a smug dumbass Prius driver who doesn't ever actually look at the road got what was coming to them. On the other hand, a car is getting bad rap because some people can't grasp that the speedometer is linked to wheel speed, so they don't understand that she probably *was* just hydroplaning. On the other hand, it's a Prius that's cathcing the flak, and that's not so bad. On the other hand, the idiot driver has been and will continue to endanger others with her inattentiveness. On the other hand...
@Thrashy is like FTF, but for CRXes: One of my hobbies back when I delivered pizza was to see, on a rainy day, how high I could get my speedometer before the traction control kicked in. There was one very straight and uninterrupted thoroughfare in my old delivery area which also benefitted from poorish drainage, so if I hit the patches right, I got the speedo up to 70 some, maybe 80 miles an hour? Good times.
Did anyone watch the new/old episode of Top Gear on BBC America last night? A Prius driven to the limits got worse mileage than an M3 following the Prius.
When you have to work the hell out of a tiny engine in order to get high speeds, of course it is going to get less mileage than a larger engine that doesn't have to work that hard. That's why Corvettes have been known to get 27-28 mpg on the freeway at 65 mph.
I find that when I pay attention to driving, far less unintended or unexpected things happen.
Could still be a real problem. We had a family friend whose big GM car had unintended acceleration. Fortunately, she had the presence of mind to turn the ignition off when it happened. Seems that one of the engine mounts collapsed, jamming the throttle linkage wide open.
@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet: it's true- in all seriousness, my Grand Am experiences spontaneous acceleration at times. I've gotten used to it, and it's happened far less the past two years (though I've also driven a lot less), but it does happen. And usually when I'm trying to maneuver at low speed. Makes it extra fun.
I'm going to buy a Prius. That's it. Last straw. Now I can drive at 86 mph everywhere, and when I get pulled over I'll just tell the cop it was "unintended acceleration" and, since I'm being green, he will probably let me go.
@engineerd: "Look officer, I'm driving a Prius, a goddamn Prrriiiuuusssss! It is my lifelong dream to drive at 86mpg rather than mph, and if it weren't for faulty engineering from Toyota, I'd be on my way to that goal! But thanks to them, at 86 mph, I am only managing 16mpg!?! Do you know how that feels? It is like a bullet in my heart, a dagger to my chest from my best friend, a bomb in my own house as my family sleeps as night, it feels, frankly, like death. Mr Officer, driving a Prius but only managing to get..."
"Ok, ok, I get it. Now get going before I change my mind."

The tests are out there, and include but aren't limited to, "good taste", "business acumen", and "actual enviromental impact awareness."
You have to fail at least these 3 to purchase a Prius.

Otherwise, I agree. The Goodyear Integrities that come on that car are shit and a half. Even the Regatta 2 is a much better tire.

To be perfectly fair, this is not a new issue with cars that use CVTs.
