The old-school Subarus were purposefully, even charmingly, ugly and awkward.

Looks like these guys only caught the last part of the brief.

Also, cue predictable rant about bloat etc.

I was going to say that I couldn't see this thing tearing up the European rally circuit, but then remembered that neither could Subaru.

Ok, usually I'm the guy defending each Subaru restyle, reminding you all how much you hated the last one and how this one's going to grow on you.

(For reference, I love my 2006 Flying V@gina)

But this is bad, like, Sloth from Goonies bad.

I believe manufacturers have forgotten the KISS principle. I've had 3 Legacy station wagons, 4 cyl, 5 spd, base models. They got reasonable MPG, they work in the snow, and they were well priced. BUT no more, Subaru has decided to leave that market and go upscale. So they are no longer simple, honest transportation. Sure is a shame. My 2001 has 125K on the clock, I hope to milk it another 2 years or so. By then maybe this deep-recession will shock them back to reality. Right now, if I had to guess, only FORD has a clue about a path to the future. Maybe there is a Fusion or a Taurus in my future. Sure would like there to be a manual transmission available. Don't need sat-nav, sync, i-drive, m-drive, etc. I'm betting the electronics will be most of the problems long term, and your friendly mechanic will not have a clue. WHEW....sorry for the RANT.

Interestingly, the real car looks better than the rendering.

That isn't usually how it works out for me.

Goddamn that thing is ugly. And not in the traditional rugged, functional kind of ugly that Subaru is famous for, but in the Aztek "two designers working from each end" kind of ugly. Or rather, a better description would be the bastard offspring of a Toyota Camry and a Mitsubishi Lancer. It's the same old crap that all modern sedans are doing today, with a general helping of ricer bullshit thrown in for good measure.

    /rant

Anyways, I'm curious if y'all have a favorite Subaru when it comes to styling? Mine would probably be either the BRAT, the 1st Gen. WRX two-door, or the 2nd Gen. WRX hatchback.

So, the last generation Legacy was a flash in the pan, the single car they've ever built that looked attractive the day it rolled off the assembly line? I'm just not going to say what I think about this one for about five years.

I don't know why, but there's something familiar and inviting about that face, even though it is quite ugly on a car...

I suppose the current Legacy wasn't batshit ugly or insectoid-looking enough. Looks like we'll be holding onto our 2006 for a bit longer then.

The lower half of the bumper needs to go. Immediately.

Otherwise, however, I don't mind it. It's better than an Accord or Spamry, and it's gonna get you noticed.

Really, as long as the Flying Vagina grille is gone, I'm happy.

I think it's gorgeous, despite the general reaction here.

Chrome color highlights the lines at the unveil, so also good.

The muscular lines accent the turbo-AWD underneath.

The only thing I don't like is the bucktoothed grille.
