Gauges are to be emblazoned with VDO or Smiths or Veglia or Stewart Warner, a small reminder of your machine's country of origin, and all that's best about the marque.

Gauges should be arrayed across a purposeful dashboard, conveying the status of vital functions and easily read at full chat. If they're interspersed with functional toggle and/or rocker switches, all the better.

That said, electronic clusters like the one featured in the article are another attempt at soulless engineers and soulless consumers conspiring to make our conveyances soulless as well. Unfortunately, they seem to be meeting with increased success.
