One note too is that aluminum body panels etc can lead to a bigger premium. I recall reading that the Audi A8 and it's brethren were expensive insurance headaches because of the limited body shop expertise in working on aluminum parts.

@HDC: True. The A8, R8, and Jaguar XK (as well as the XJ which I was suprised didn't make the 'cut,' are all aluminum.

1. It never stays running long enough to take it out on the road.

@BigHarv: You haven't noticed Mercedes' trend of getting really porky? Even the SLR McLaren weighs in at a rather portly 3898 lbs, and an SL65 AMG (non-Black Series) is a shocking 4555 lbs. Yeah, two and a quarter tons of two-seater... what's wrong with this picture?

Oddly enough, I can hypothetically insure pretty much any ear air-cooled 911 for substantially less than what I pay on my xB, despite the former being an inherently deadlier car.

Of course, I apparently only manage to own cars that are mostly driven by dangerous-to-themselves-and-others retards. The base-model Impreza I had previously was also relatively expensive to insure (and rates on WRXs and STis are horrifying).

Interestingly, you do not want to insure a gray-market car, either. My girlfriend probably pays 50% more than she should be just because her Intrepid was sold in Canada, rather than the US. Apparently, the fact that the badges read "Chrysler" rather than "Dodge" puts her in a higher risk category.

Not sure where this data comes from, but my experience on an audi s8 says it is relatively cheap to insure. My 2007 s8 cost $50 less/6 months (@$598) than my 535 ($620) and Lex RX ($645)...all with same drivers and coverage in NYC area. And, the S8 is on the policy as the commuting car.

@not4one: Rare cars tend to be cheaper to insure because the number of claims made on them are low. Or at least that's what my ex-g/f from years ago told me (she came from a family of insurance agents)...

I really have no idea if that is factually accurate, but kinda makes sense, except for the fact that you'd think they would base the number of claims made on that type of car off of a per-capita figure rather than just the number of claims with no calculated context... whatev...

why the hell does a Cobalt SS cost so damn much to insure? I know for certain a Mazdaspeed 3 doesnt cost that much, and neither does a WRX, or a GTI. Maybe in the hands of a 18 year old, but above 25 I am highly suspect of that number. On the other hand... being under 25 means I get hit with $1200 a year for a Mazdaspeed 6...

@knyghtryda: The rates are a combination of the value of the car (replacement cost), the incidence of theft for that model, the incidence of theft in your area, and repair costs for that model.

So I'm guessing that the Cobalt SS gets stolen a lot. That's about all that could explain it...
