Heh. I ran in the Tupelo "Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead" marathon on Sunday. It was on open roads with no shoulders, and about 10% of Sunday morning driver were total dickheads.
It's a surreal experience to be nearly killed -- repeatedly -- by folks dressed in their Sunday best on their way to church.
@Mobius: No kidding. He went out and got those photos---climbing all the way up to the top of the bridge. That's dedication! And on a holiday weekend! Talk about cotomer sevic!
Well over here in the SF Bay Area, we just learned that everybody's favorite traffic jam generator, a.k.a. the Bay Bridge will not re-open as planned on Tuesday due to a crack in a steel piece discovered during an inspection over the weekend. The bridge has been closed since Thursday night while a 300' section is being swapped to prepare for the construction of the new bridge.

@dwegmull welcomes all the ghosts: hey, as long as they keep running BART running 24-7 it's all good. I've never seen BART as packed as it was at 2am on Friday night.. it was a party train..
I did not know this, and I bet most of you didn't either. Labor Day originated in Canada in the 1870s. The American labor leader at that time witnessed one of Canada's Labour Day events in Toronto. He was so inspired that upon his return to New York, he organized the first American 'labor day' on 5 Sept 1882. For more details, check Wikipedia.
@skaycog - Just Say Yes!: While it's true, this version of Labour Day did spring up originally in Canada, variations on the theme had previously existed elsewhere in the world -- the May Day celebrations, IIRC. So we can't take ALL the credit. But for this particular one, you're welcome.
@Deartháir II: The Return: Wow, you knew it originated from Canada. I'm impressed by your vast knowledge. I always thought Labor Day was a day for expectant mothers.

Half-speed relative to normal Jalopnik, or in general? If it's the former, I expect a pace marginally better than "glacial". If the latter, hey, business as usual!
I kid, I kid. Happy Labour Day, you Filthy Socialist Bastards.

Myself, it's a lazy Saturday AM field trip with some buddies in the model RR community. The rest of it will be spent at my in-laws', where a '29 Model A Roadster Pickup *and* a 1966 Mustang await some attention - I started getting those projects underway earlier this summer. Well the '66 sorta got a setback no-thanks to a mishap with a Bobcat, but that's another story for one of my patented TL;DR posts... (but I assure you all the end justified the means).
Also, I have to see if I can get my LeMons candidate started and prepped for the trip home (where the real work will begin). The Kentucky Fried Cougar may yet live...!

Drink tonight, sleep in Saturday, watch football most of the day, mow the lawn, start drinking again, go for a 4x4 ride around the farms, drink more, stay up late watching a camp fire burn. Beer tastes so good around camp fires.
Sleep in Sunday, get up, play LEGO with the kids, watch racing, drink, watch another camp fire.
Sleep in Monday, play more LEGO, lounge around, drink, watch another campfire.
Labor Day has always had very little meaning to me. Part of it is just my personality, part of it is the climate here.
It doesn't "start getting cold" here until mid-October (hooray, climbing season). The first overnight freeze isn't typically until late November. I don't really care about college football. All the schools started back in August, so nobody really goes on vacation. It's just like another hallmark holiday weekend.
And dammit, I'll keep wearing any color of shoes I want.
@Ash78: I know what you mean. After spending the whole summer unemployed, a federal holiday doesn't mean much to me. In fact, I'm anxiously awaiting the start of my new job in a few weeks.
I'm also about to become a Georgia resident, so the whole getting cold thing doesn't apply to me, either (after 23 years in the Midwest, I'm looking forward to that fact). I'm indifferent to college football, too, but not having to endure another season surrounded by bandwagon Buckeyes fans is something I'm excited about.

@FromaBuick6: You're about to get an eye opener on how seriously some people take college football. I think you'll find more variety here, though, and less Buckeye bandwagon (In GA, you'll have a mix of UGA, Georgia Tech, plus some random SC, AL, and TN fans in there).
I just hope I can make it through smalltalk and business meetings for the next 4 months without having paid attention to any games.

@John Krewson: I wouldn't feel threatened by that. That's a 1911, which has a single action trigger. The hammer is not cocked back, which means the person holding the gun would have to pull the hammer back, then pull the trigger. More than enough time to disarm/kill them.

I am off to the state dock labor day weekend bash (KY) in an hour or so. Me and my buddies rent a houseboat for the weekend shenanigans. Drunken (and blacked out) houseboat orgy here I come!
I've found this new-to-me job underpays by close to 50% (based on my skills/experience and responsibilities)...however, since I've been here a month, and have figured out most of what's going on, I have Jalop time, ergo, I'm not complaining.
