We know the car arrives in showrooms early next year, and what's a new car without the lasers and dry ice of an auto show unveiling? But why LA and not Detroit?

Our sources tell us the reason the Giugiaro concept-based 'Stang is coming to LA is partly due to the lucrative convertible market represented by sunny California, but also because it offers Ford the opportunity to become the star of the show. Despite being located in the civilized world, LA is still eclipsed by Detroit's NAIAS, which sees a huge number of new models unveiled each year. By unveiling the Mustang in LA, Ford hopes to guarantee more coverage.

It also looks like we'll be getting three models at the unveiling, as described in Ford's press release:

• New Ford Mustang - coupe, convertible, and glass-roof models - in early 2009

No word on which engines we'll be seeing, but our fingers are firmly crossed for an Eco-Boost-equipped 300 HP 2010 Ford Mustang SVO.

<![CDATA[ Mazda To Reveal Anonymous Concept Crossover In Moscow ]]> Mazda is showing off their latest Nagare design ("flow" in Japanese) to the Russians today, unveiling an unnamed concept crossover vehicle and describing it as a "sporty, compact crossover SUV designed especially for the Russian market." We're not sure exactly what that means, but a smoky two-stroke under a hood made entirely of iron would be appropriate. Mazda's Nagare designs are said to represent natural flow and first appeared at the 2006 LA Auto Show. Full release and gallery after the jump.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda will present an all-new show car at this year's Moscow International Automobile Salon. The concept is a sporty, compact crossover SUV designed especially for the Russian market.

The Moscow show car is the latest concept to be developed using the new design direction called Nagare - following in the footsteps of Nagare, Ryuga, Hakaze, Taiki and Furai. Nagare, which means "flow" in Japanese, represents a new approach to expressing movement in car design, taking as inspiration the flow patterns of natural elements, such as the wind. The design theme of Mazda's concept for the 2008 Moscow motor show is "crosswinds".

Russia is one of Europe's fastest-growing markets and is rapidly becoming the region's largest automobile market. SUVs are particularly popular in Russia, with a segment share of about 20 percent. Mazda's latest concept car is designed to appeal particularly to younger SUV owners who have a strong sense of style.

The Moscow show car, the name of which will be announced in due course, again showcases the depth of creativity within Mazda design. In February 2008, the Mazda Design team received the coveted Grand Prix du Design at the Festival Automobile International in Paris.

The Moscow International Automobile Salon media days are on August 26 and 27, whereas August 28 caters for industry and trade specialists. The show is open to the public from August 29 through September 7. The new show car will be unveiled at the Mazda press conference at 10:15 on August 26 at the Mazda stand.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Nissan 370Z? ]]>

The always strange looking Vince Burlapp at the always blogasmic The Hollywood Extra (as well as the off-road-loving boys at the 4WheelsBlog have a scan up of what they're claiming is the 2010 Nissan 370Z. The shot looks very similar to the shots we've already seen out of Japan's Best Car magazine of the replacement for the Nissan 350Z.
2010-Nissan-370Z.jpgWhile we don't know anything more than the one picture we've got, we're always happy to see new proof of the new 3.7-liter VQ37VHR-powered pudding from the Japanese side of Carlos Ghosn's globe-spanning automotive empire. We're just hoping the rumors we'll be seeing it live at the LA Auto Show later this year are true. (Hat tip to Scoobie!) [The Hollywood Extra, 4WheelsBlog]

<![CDATA[ Cadillac Readying Hybrid Chopper For LA Auto Show ]]> The Cadillac that ain't your father's may be just be two-wheeled. Word of a new Cadillac motorcycle sporting gee whiz ethanol hybrid technology has just surfaced in D Business. The Caddy that leans will be built by V20 Consulting in New York and shown off at the next LA Auto Show. The irony of an outside company building a technology demostrator isn't lost on us, but it isn't the first time the General has collaborated with someone on a motorcycle. Just a couple hundred feet from the Detroit offices lives the first Caddy chopper, built by and currently for sale at Great American Chopper in Clawson, MI.

Knowing it was there, we took a quick jaunt to their shop so you can see what may inform the next motorcycle. According to the folks who work there, reports of Caddy boss Jim Trailer actually buying this bike are greatly exaggerated, so if you want to take a look for yourself and live in the Detroit area, it'll be there for all to see. <![CDATA[ Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept Reveal... Revealed... Finally ]]>
You may have missed being at the LA Auto Show in person for the reveal of the Hyundai Genesis coupe concept but now we've got some video of the reveal. The video shows off both the Korean automaker's new 300-HP RWD sports car as well as a made-for-press intro video starring a woman who may be the world's hottest spy photographer ever. You may be wondering why we'd be showing this video today — like two weeks after the LA show ended. Sheer laziness perhaps? Or maybe we just wanted to keep her the Hyundai hotness all to ourselves.

<![CDATA[ Toyota VP And Rainforest Action Network Scuffle After Introduction Of 2008 Sequoia ]]>
Apparently there was more going on at the reveal of the new 14 MPG 2008 Toyota Sequoia than just the reveal of an uber-humongous SUV based on the new bigger n' beefier Tundra pickup. We didn't find out until after we left LA-LA-land, but the folks from the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) snuck into the reveal to ask Bob Carter, vice president and general manager of Toyota's US division a few questions about why the automaker all about advertising green is one of the automakers suing to stop California from restricting vehicular CO2 emissions. According to Rick Popely from the Chicago Tribune, Carter, noting
"the man's media badge identified him as Dave Schembri, head of Mercedes-Benz's Smart division...knocked the video camera from the man's hands, and security guards separated the two."
Toyota spokesperson Irv Miller said later in response to the incident: ""It's probably on YouTube now. That's freedom of speech..." Yes, Irv — and as the above video proves — you're right on both counts. By the way, the best part of the video isn't the altercation — it's Carter's stunned reaction to the question asked. <![CDATA[ Preview: Jalopnik Drives the Honda FCX Clarity ]]> You're looking at Honda's new hydrogen fuel cell powered FCX Clarity parked in front of the Malibu Presbyterian Church that was destroyed in the recent fires. As the Clarity emits water and achieves the gasoline consumption equivalent of 68 mpg, we thought it only fitting to shoot it parked in front of one of Global Warming's victims. The Clarity, of course, is supposed to help with all that — although we're still not real clear on the clarity of the environmental benefits of hydrogen created using currently readily available sources. But Honda claims they're working on that — and hey, it'll reduce your home's overall power bills. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Honda tossed us the keys to their multi-million dollar pre-production baby (LA Times Pulitzer Prize-winning auto critic Dan Neil claims it's worth "like $10,000,000 or more") and let us cruise from Santa Monica through the toasted canyons of Malibu. <![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Suzuki SX4 Makai Concept ]]> Though it may never see the light of production, this SX4 hatchback-based convertible would be an excellent beach car (though maybe not as nice as an old Brat). The Suzuki SX4 Makai Concept is all about fun, and fun means no roof, smaller windshield and a roll bar. Also surfboards. You can't have fun without surfboards. In addition to the obvious exterior changes, the car also gets a set of four ventilated seats, lotos of music power, a Momo Sport steering wheel and color-keyed accent lighting. Press release below the jump.

Suzuki Makai

Concurrent with the arrival of the 2008 SX4 Sport production vehicle, Suzuki further expands its highly popular and media-acclaimed Suzuki LIVE Series (LIFE VEHICLES) - a line of brand-dedicated concept vehicles specially designed for life enthusiasts, adventurers and thrill-seekers.

With spirited colors and a playful design, Suzuki's newest LIVE Series offering, the Makai concept, is based on the all-new 2008 SX4 Sport and has a dedicated open-car bodystyle for breezy fun-in-the-sun motoring - the perfect ingredient for an exhilarating driving experience. Fabricated and painted by Andry Specialty Vehicles of Torrance, Calif., the Makai's potential is fully realized with its comprehensive list of imaginative, high-style features.

From the ground up, its large 19-inch CEC wheels, wide Michelin Pilot sport tires, four-wheel disc brakes with drilled and slotted rotors and Rotora calipers further enhance the Makai's wide, aggressive stance. Adorned with multi-step sunset orange paint, custom body kit, styled exhaust, and LED taillights and running lamps, the Makai's exterior is sure to turn curious heads.

Beachgoers and surf aficionados will enjoy the ride to the beach just as much as the beach itself with Makai's custom surfboard mounting rack and dual matching sunset orange trimmed boards. A shaved windscreen and targa rear hoop further enhances the Makai's sporty open-air look.

The Makai's al fresco cabin is complete with custom interior components, including ventilated, suspended seats in all four positions, high output, beach party-themed VeaLink audio system with MTX speakers and components, dashboard-integrated Garmin® navigation system, Kinetik Power Cell battery, StreetWires audio/video install kit and cabling, Momo Sport steering wheel and color-keyed interior accent lighting.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Spykers ]]> You know what's hard? Having just one favorite supercar maker. Go ahead, say Ferrari and I'll park my Murcielago next to your 599 GTB, making the latter look like nothing but a shiny red Corvette with yellow horse stickers pasted all over it. Luckily we write about cars for a living, guaranteeing that not only will we soon be able to afford all the hot Italian metal we want, but our yacht will totally be able to handle a helicopter. Wow. We just went insane for a full minute. Well, a little mental slippage is to be expected. Seriously, you try hanging around this many Spykers and not getting your mind blown just a teensy bit. Surprisingly, we liked the relatively sorta sane C8 Spyder more than the howlin' at the moon C12 Zagato. But again, making rational decisions in this lofty realm is the stuff rich people have to worry about. We will say that the Aston Martins parked next door to Spykerland were absolutely invisible by comparison. A curiosity follows should you choose to jump.

spyker2.jpgThis is the C8 Spyder's leather shrouded pedal box. Yes, all four pedals stick straight up in the air. Four pedals! Calm down, calm down — the far lefty is the dead pedal. While I found all four felt awkward and odd, rich people have an extra joint in their ankles. Hence, they love 'em.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Kia KND-4 Concept ]]> Nothing says green and sexy like a little Kia turbodiesel action. What you see here is the KIA KND-4 compact SUV concept, meant to show off that Kia can make a sharp mini-ute for the urban crowd that never actually wants to get off the road. More interesting than the outside is what's under the hood. This baby is powered by a 2.2-liter Variable Geometry Turbocharger diesel engine with Active Torque Transfer, which helps keep you moving forward in slippery conditions. While not as hip as the gigantic hybrids being offered by those other guys, we'd bet this little baby could do better than 18 MPG. Just saying. Press release below the jump.

KIA DEBUTS KND-4 CONCEPT VEHICLE IN LOS ANGELES

New Concept Compact SUV Offers Bold Hint at Kia's Future

LOS ANGELES , November 15, 2007 - Kia Motors America (KMA) today unveiled the all-new KND-4 compact SUV concept vehicle at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Having made its world debut at the Seoul Motor Show in April, the KND-4 concept was specifically designed to provide an idea of what next-generation Kia compact SUVs will be like. Conceived at the Kia Design Center in Korea, the new concept exhibits a powerful and strong character that corresponds with Kia's philosophy of "Exciting and Enabling."

"The KND-4 compact SUV is a vital vehicle because it showcases dynamic and sophisticated styling cues that are strongly indicative of future Kia SUV models," said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KMA. "Designed with active and independent consumers in mind, KND-4 demonstrates Kia's ongoing commitment to making vehicles that are both stylish and technologically advanced."

Athletic and Sleek Exterior

KND-4 appeals to consumers who crave freedom and an active lifestyle, while removing the boundary between the city and outdoors to allow the driver to express his or her unique personality. The swift, rounded front end features LED headlamps and a sleek radiator grille, which flows smoothly into flared wheel arches that wrap around 20-inch, low-profile tires.

The pronounced shoulder line and sweeping C-pillar give a dynamic flare to the compact SUV, while the large rear window highlighting the interior volume and uniquely-styled rear cluster lamps emphasize the overall sporty stance. Short overhangs and a high ground clearance ensure excellent off-road capabilities.

Future-Oriented Interior

KND-4's interior provides a unique contrast to the strong character of the exterior. Designed to seat four passengers in individual, independent seats, future-oriented accents include floor, dash and door trim panels in a metallic finish, highlighted by indirect lighting that reflects in the metallic material and creates an exciting cabin ambience that will appeal to a passenger's sentimental side. The cargo room in the back of the vehicle not only provides room for storage, but also is outfitted with a mobile hard case used for storage, as well as an emergency kit.

Equipped with the most advanced technology, KND-4 enables the driver to obtain information from both inside and outside the vehicle and use entertainment features conveniently. AMOLED (Active-Matrix, Organic, Light Omitting Diode), the next-generation high-quality display, has been applied to the top and bottom of the cluster and center fascia to provide a clear image regardless of the visual angle. This way, the driver can receive moving images from the navigation system, vehicle information, as well as mobile phones. KND-4 also offers the driver both Bluetooth and Blu-ray technologies, controlled by multi-function buttons on the steering wheel, plus a built-in hard disc for the audio player.

Efficient Power

KND-4 is powered by a 2.2-liter Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) diesel engine featuring Kia's Active Torque Transfer (ATT) system, which, in severely slippery conditions, automatically distributes torque to the wheel or wheels with the best traction.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Mazda Clay Concept ]]> I had a little Mazda, I made it out of clay... As we reported earlier, Mazda's having their journeyman sculptors create a clay model of the winning entry in its recent design challenge. That contest collected 150-word descriptions via Facebook, which Mazda designers rendered in two-dee. The winner, as voted by Facebook denizens, is the product of an industrial design student from the University of Notre Dame. It's getting its third, clay dimension during the LA show, and the finished product will be unveiled to significant mock fanfare on November 24. Cheers to brother Bumbeck for the purty pictures.

<![CDATA[ Commenter of the Day: French Tatra > LA Auto Show Edition ]]> Crazy, we know it, but at a massive international auto show where the biggest true reveals are a Dodge crossover and hybrid pickup trucks, it becomes possible for a 35-year-old French/Czech mashup to steal our heart. And judging by your comments, the same goes for you all. Of course, this shared sentiment got us thinking. How could this be? How could a design study blow our collective minds farther than a $1.4 million carbon-fiber Lamborghini? I mean, the Faurecia doesn't even have an engine, let alone performance numbers. Oh, and as the Faurecia is indeed motor-less, we're going to go ahead and name it out green car of the year. Shake a carbon footprint at that, you dirty old hybrids. Anyhow, the reason why the Faurecia is so head slappin' after you jump.

From today's Faurecia press kit post, here's what Harumph had to say:

this car will unfortunately never make it to the u.s. because it greatly exceeds the government's limits on how interesting the cars sold here can be.
Here, here. Ahem. What he said. The end is nigh. We need a cigarette. A Gauloises in fact.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Winner of the Design Challenge, Robocar 2057 is... the Volkswagen Concept Slipstream ]]> A panel of experts consisting of car designers, robotics specialists, Art Center faculty and (presumably) Stephan Hawkings' wheelchair looked at all the entrants and decided that the Slipstream is the coolest dog in the window. To refresh your memory, around town the Slipstream rides upright on two wheels and occupies 1/5 the space of a conventional car. Once on a specially built freeway (also called Slipstream), the Slipstream lays down like a regular car, deploys rear fins and can hit speeds exceeding 250 mph. Jalopnik would like to point out that the Slipstream's top speed is a full 50 mph slower than the Vector A-WX-8. Just sayin'. In conclusion, Mercedes-Benz was robbed! congratulations to the VW team of Derek Jenkins, Ian Hilton and Patrick Faulwetter.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Mitusbishi Concept-cX ]]> Two points of interest. One is the 1.8-liter diesel mill with a variable geometry turbocharger that together kick out 130 hp of jam with 206 ft-lb. of twisting power. The other is that it looks, well, super! We love the EVO front end with the gaped maw for the intercooler and the functional brake-cooling inlet ducts. Even though traditionally we are less than enthralled with trucklettes, we really dig the cut of the cX's jib. Like, lots. And then you got AWD and the DSG TC-SST tranny, we're thinking Mitsubishi really ought to build the Concept cX. Course, the last person who followed our advice woke up in Tijuana without any pants on. Still, we know more about cars than we do about [CENSORED]. Go for it Mitsubishi. While you're at it, how 'bout a new Starion? Anyway, happy 25-years in the US. You've come a long way since the Cordia.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Faurecia Press Kit ]]> Who do we love? Faurecia! Why do we love them? Because they are French and they took a 1972 Tatra, gutted the innards, ripped the engine out of the butt and created one of the most striking vehicles here at the LA Auto Show. Both inside and out. And of course, Davey and I are convinced that Faurecia's been listening in on our phone calls. Yesterday we snapped some exterior shots of their design study which were very nice indeed. However, the fine folks at Faurecia handed us a press kit with even better photos of the outside, and some really excellent glimpses on the triple-svelte interior. Seriously, the front door inserts and the seat backs are made from white oak. Real white oak, the kind you age burgundy in. And a press release after the jump.

Press Release

Los Angeles, Nov. 14, 2007

Faurecia launches "Premium Attitude": added-value for automakers through design, innovation and engineering

Faurecia's new Premium Attitude concept car reveals the next generation of interior innovations available to automakers. Far from a flight of fancy, Premium Attitude displays Faurecia's ability to create new design innovations and integrate them into highly feasible engineering solutions within one car.

Faurecia is a global specialist in six major modules, including seats, doors, cockpits, acoustic packages, front ends and exhaust systems. Faurecia is committed to innovation and premium, creating design freedom for its customers through end-user understanding, technology integration, and production expertise. This new complete-value-chain approach accounts for the economic reality of the business in which both the costs and risks incurred by innovation must be managed appropriately. In a growing premium market, Faurecia shows that premium products are possible in any style of vehicle.

The premium trend
"The idea of premium is the single biggest trend to be sweeping the automotive market at the moment," explains Jacques Mauge, Faurecia's Executive Vice President of Group Customer Development. "Automakers are well aware of this. They are seeking to differentiate their vehicles through the notion of premium. Consumers today want much more than utility and function out of their vehicles. They also want pleasure and status. They want an experience."
Premium is one of the fastest growing market segments worldwide. In 2006, premium vehicle sales accounted for two million units in North America and more than 2.5 million in Western Europe. By 2019, this segment is predicted to grow to nearer three million in North America and close to 3.5 million in Western Europe.

Faurecia's answer: Premium Attitude
Faurecia covers all automotive market segments but "premium" is a quality that can be found in all vehicle segments. It is desirable but affordable and can be mass-produced. Premium should always represent "good taste", be well designed, constructed with high quality materials, exceptional craftsmanship and perceived quality.
But premium can be cost-effective. It is about intelligent product design, fine execution and an obsession for detail. It does not necessarily have to come at a cost. As a leading Tier 1 supplier, Faurecia is a driving force in creating new architecture giving design freedom to the automakers, and then turning their conception of premium into an industrial reality. Once a product is industrialized, Faurecia has the capability to mass-produce it with a consistency already respected by global automakers worldwide.
Ten key innovative technologies are revealed on the Faurecia Premium Attitude concept car, ranging from production-ready features that could be utilized today, to production-feasible solutions for the near future. These innovations have been built around three key directions:

1.
Intelligent product design and user interaction

2.
Magic experience and surprise in use

3.
Obsession for detail

Sharing Faurecia's vision of the future
All innovations featured here illustrate how Faurecia is able to combine its extensive design and engineering expertise to offer a new level of "premium" values which automakers' designers can then utilize in their creative visions for new products. As Faurecia's Industrial Design Vice President Andreas Wlasak puts it: "This is the first ever concept to bring all of Faurecia's disciplines into play. But it is not just a catalogue of features; it is an integrated statement of market understanding, product innovation and development competencies within a full-size concept car."

Faurecia's strategy - based on component platforms where invisible parts are standardized as much as possible - opens space and design freedom for automakers. By presenting a full vehicle concept, Faurecia is able to demonstrate its design and engineering expertise across its six product lines in a vehicle environment, as the end-user would experience it. Each innovation can be appreciated in its context.
Anticipating user needs and creating a dialogue with automakers

The Premium Attitude concept car is aimed at starting new dialogue with automakers' design, product planning and senior management departments before new vehicle projects are started. As Philippe Aumont, Vice President of Product Planning stresses: "Our concept is not trying to compete with our clients, but to act as an enabler of joint innovation development." The Tatra's classic sedan silhouette was chosen as the basis for the Premium Attitude because it offers a very similar interior space to a modern Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series or Audi A6, and shows that such vehicle body types can still compete in terms of versatility and premium space, when developed intelligently. Furthermore, Premium Attitude emphasizes the increasing importance of vehicle interiors to offer more differentiation in an ever more fragmented automotive market.

This concept car is also a truly international project, encompassing Faurecia teams from France, the United States and Germany and involving Faurecia's expertise in the fields of industrial design, product planning, research & development and engineering.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: 2008 Subaru WRX STI Revealed to America ]]> You have no idea how badly we want to stick about 17 exclamation points at the end of this headline. Yes friends, the new STI is (just about) here and yeah, it's a wagon. Huzza! And for those of you not interested in extra storage space, the wildly named Dual Active Valve System variable valve timing for both the in and the outdoor valves (Dual AVCS) lets the 2.5-liter boxer motor spin out 305 horses and crank off 290 ft-lb. of the torque. Oof, take that! It doesn't take a doctor of automotive journalism to realize that you don't need Corvette vs. Viper when you got new and improved EVO vs. superwagon STI. Wow... I guess I really am fried, cause the notion of a Viper shooting-brake just crossed my mind. Be sure to check the gallery for the WRC-dressed rally car. And the tailgate pins.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: 2009 Nissan Murano ]]> The re-styled Nissan Murano also bowed at the auto show this week, though it was slightly overshadowed by its world eating cousin. The new Murano has styling that we're told "imparts a "modern art" feel, but still maintains its "Murano-ness." Are they saying it like that's a good thing? The new Murano gets its motivation from a revised version of everyone's favorite 3.5L VQ V6, this time putting out 265 horsepower and connected to a new Xtronic CVT transmission. The theme of this new car is "mobile suite," and therefore gets all the electronic gadgets Nissan could fit into the D Platform including a push button ignition, rearview monitor, iPod connectivity, 9-inch screen with DVD, 11-speaker Bose audio system, GPS navigation and a 9.3GB HD for music. Press release for this tall Altima crossover below.

All-New 2009 Nissan Murano Crossover Offers New Design, Advanced Technology and "Business Class" Features

The original Nissan Murano, launched in 2003 as a 2004 model, set new standards for style and sportiness in the expanding mid-size crossover sport-utility vehicle marketplace, becoming, in essence, a "class of one." The all-new, second generation 2009 Murano elevates that unique position through a "super evolution" of the original design - with a new exterior, interior and enhanced technology. Murano's new premium driving feel results from a combination of a new advanced platform, continued refinement of Murano's standard V6 engine and new, second-generation Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission).

"The 2009 Murano is an upgrade, not just compared to the previous generation vehicle, but the entire crossover SUV segment," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "With its unique combination of modern design, dynamic performance, new 'business class' interior and overall refinement, Murano continues to stand out as the most distinctive, refined vehicle in class."

The 2009 Murano's new exterior features a wide front end with a dynamic front fascia design, a wide grille with large integrated headlights, strong body side character lines with pronounced 18-inch or 20-inch wheels and tires and a distinctive rear end set off by an expansive rear glass area and LED taillights.

Murano's newly designed interior plays on the "mobile suite" theme, complete with new instrument panel and center stack design, new seat design with available double-stitched leather-appointed seating surfaces, use of premium materials such as leather and aluminum, a variety of storage compartments and ambient lighting.

The 2009 Murano is powered by a revised 265-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V6 backed by a new advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), with a front-wheel drive or an advanced all-wheel drive drivetrain. Murano also features a new D-platform, as well as new suspension, body structure and state-of-the-art steering for improved ride comfort and precise handling.

Multiple technology features are available on the 2009 Murano, including standard Push Button Ignition and available Intelligent Key, RearView Monitor, integrated iPod® connectivity, DVD Mobile Entertainment System with 9-inch screen, 11-speaker Bose® audio system and an enhanced touch screen Nissan Navigation system with voice activation XM® NavTraffic real-time traffic information (XM® subscription required, sold separately) and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive.

"All of these features combine to create a crossover that is a standout in its class," said Bosley. "One of the strengths of the new 2009 Murano is that you get the total package - design, performance, safety and technology in one refined, quality vehicle."

New, Dramatic Styling

One of the most striking aspects of the 2009 Murano is its new body, which imparts a "modern art" feel, but still maintains the "Murano-ness" that consumers have enjoyed since the first generation's debut. "When someone looks at the 2009 Murano, they'll instantly know what it is by its distinctive Murano style," said Bosley. "The new Murano's design takes its cue from the original vehicle and adds a more rewarding sense of style and individuality. Others have tried to imitate it, but there is only one true Murano."

Murano's new front end features a distinctive grille treatment with wide front headlights - with available quad-cylinder style High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional projector headlights adding an even more imposing view. A new hood sweeps into the sculpted, dynamic bodylines, with pronounced wheel arches and 18-inch or 20-inch wheels providing an aggressive stance.

Integrated fog lights are available on Murano SL and LE models. Large chrome door handles and available roof rails with adjustable crossbars (accessory) add both functionality and visual accents.

The Murano's redesigned rear end features a unique rear glass shape, rear air deflector and large rear LED taillights that accent the body side character line. Dual exhaust outlets with chrome finishers provide an appropriate "final" look to the 2009 Murano.

New available exterior features for 2009 include rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate, enhanced RearView Monitor with rear view camera and a large, dual panel power sliding glass moonroof and 2 nd row skylight - a new feature that provides an open-air experience for Murano passengers without compromising head room.

Eight exterior colors are offered on the 2009 Murano, including three all new colors - Deep Sapphire, Tinted Bronze and Saharan Stone.

A New " Mobile Suite" Interior

Inside, the new Murano lives up to its "mobile suite" design theme, with an interior exemplifying warmth and modern style. From the sweep of the new instrument panel, to the new telescoping steering wheel design, to the wide console and ambient lighting, Murano owners feel a sense of warmth and security from the first time they open the doors.

Murano's new front seats have been designed for enhanced support, offering a rich, supple feel and excellent riding comfort. The 60/40 fold-flat rear seat is now available with a convenient power return feature - the seat returns to the upright position with the touch of a button. Heated seats are available in the front and rear. Also available are new double-stitched leather-appointed seating surfaces for an inviting, luxurious feeling, an 8-way power driver's and 4-way power front passenger's seats and a driver's memory system (seats, steering wheel and mirrors). Interior colors include Cafe Latte and Charcoal.

A variety of cargo storage areas are provided throughout Murano's interior, including standard dual-level center console; pockets for mobile phones, coins, maps and more; numerous cupholders; an extra large glove compartment; and dual seatback pockets, as well as a large rear cargo area.

Another new, innovative Murano feature is an available foldaway cargo organizer. When needed, the organizer pops up with a push of a button from its hidden space below the rear cargo floor and a portion of the cargo floor snaps into a vertical position, revealing a flat recessed space with removable, vertical cargo partitions. The system helps prevent items such as sports equipment and grocery bags from rolling loose around the cargo area while driving. The area is also ideal for wet or dirty items due to its easy-clean box floor.

Other standard interior features include push button ignition; auto door lock feature, dual zone climate controls; Fine Vision gauges; and an AM/FM/CD6/six-speaker audio system with AUX-in jack, VTR jack and MP3/WMA capability.

More Power and a New Platform

All 2009 Muranos feature Nissan's award-winning VQ series engine - a revised 3.5-liter DOHC V6 with 265 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. The engine incorporates a Twin Nissan Variable Induction Control System (NICS), microfinished camshaft and crankshaft surfaces, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated valve lifters, resin intake manifold, forged crankshaft, digital knock control system, high capacity muffler and lightweight aluminum block and cylinder heads.

Engine power is transferred to a new, advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) with Adaptive Shift Control (ACS) that provides a sporty driving experience and the smoothness that only a CVT offers.

All 2009 Muranos are available in front-wheel drive or with an advanced all-wheel drive system that adjusts to road conditions in a tenth of a second. The intuitive all-wheel drive system connects the Murano VDC system's yaw sensors, wheel slip sensors and steering angle sensors with the AWD system. The system provides increased traction in all weather conditions by distributing engine torque depending on the driver's intended direction and the actual direction of the vehicle.

Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with a Traction Control System (TCS) for all-weather confidence in front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations is standard on all Murano models.

The 2009 Murano features Nissan's new, advanced "D" platform that provides a solid foundation for crossover duties. This platform, which is similar to that used in the 2008 Altima, has been optimized for Murano. The new platform gives the Murano one-and-a-half times more torsional rigidity than the first generation Murano, helping improve noise isolation and reduce vibration - benefiting the ride comfort of all passengers.

Murano offers a standard four-wheel independent suspension with extensive use of lightweight aluminum for a reduction in sprung weight. The new suspension design, with its cradle-type front subframe and multi-link rear design with improved geometry and large front and rear stabilizer bars, provides increased stiffness. The suspension, in combination with high performance dual flow path shock absorbers, helps provide sure footing in all surfaces and increased ride comfort on rough surfaces.

A new twin-orifice speed-sensitive power steering system, similar to the one used in Altima and 350Z, provides the proper levels of assistance in around-town and high-speed driving. The Murano's system provides a direct steering feel, inspiring driver confidence.

Braking is provided by large 4-wheel vented disc brakes (12.6-inch front, 12.1-inch rear) with 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

The 2009 Murano also features new wheel and tire packages - 18x7.5-inch 6-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with P235/65R18 tires (S, SL) and 20x7.5-inch 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with P235/55R20 tires (LE).

Toyota Unveils All-New 2008 Sequoia At 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show Related Media

November 14, 2007 - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A, Inc., unveiled the second-generation Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle at a press conference today at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Sequoia is completely new for 2008, with a new body, a new interior, a new chassis, an available new 5.7L V8 engine/six-speed transmission combination and an increased focus on efficiency, performance and driver/passenger comfort.

Since the Sequoia was introduced in 2000, the world has changed. With both gasoline prices and environmental concerns on the rise, Toyota's engineers and designers have taken steps to increase not just the 2008 Sequoia's performance and comfort, but also its efficiency and environmental awareness.

To that end, the Sequoia is equipped with an available powerful new 5.7L V8 engine that generates excellent fuel efficiency and very low emissions.

An all-new platform now provides exterior dimensions that are competitive with other vehicles in the Sequoia's class. Inside, highly efficient packaging gives the new Sequoia a very roomy cabin and a capacious luggage space.

In his efforts to be sure he got the 2008 Sequoia right, Chief Engineer Motoharu Araya immersed himself in American culture for two-and-a-half years as he began his design brief for the Sequoia. He even went so far as to live for a time with an American family that owned a fullsize SUV so that he could better understand the way SUV users relate to their vehicles. He also used the Internet to circulate a questionnaire so that he could acquire detailed information about how Americans use their SUVs and what their preferences are, right down to the side of the vehicle on which drivers prefer their fuel fillers to be located. The result is a class-leading vehicle with the efficiency, performance, comfort and convenience that SUV buyers want.

Engines and Transmissions
An available new DOHC 5.7L V8 engine enables the 2008 Sequoia to provide acceleration performance that is among the leaders in its class, especially while towing. Sequoia engineers developed the new engine to produce 381 hp, one of the highest outputs in this vehicle class. This engine, which is ULEV-II compliant, uses four valves per cylinder and Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to produce 401 lb-ft of torque.

Dual VVT-i continually alters the phase of each camshaft by operating the oil-control valve and controlling oil pressure on the advance/retard chamber of the VVT-i cam pulley through signals from the engine control computer. It produces optimized valve timing, contributing to higher output and increased efficiency.

Compact pentroof combustion chambers and high-strength pistons that are resin-coated to reduce friction, low-tension piston rings and a low-friction valve train that uses roller rocker arms also are important features of this engine, as is an Acoustic Control Induction System that changes the length of the intake manifold runners based on engine speed and throttle opening. The exhaust system, constructed of stainless steel, uses a valve in the main muffler to alter exhaust flow, reduce exhaust noise and improve performance. It also employs four catalytic converters - two for cold starts and two main.

As a result, the 2008 Sequoia provides the acceleration desired by users and an available towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. In addition to the available 5.7L V8 engine, the 4.7L iForce V8 continues to be offered as standard.

A smooth-shifting electronically controlled five-speed automatic ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) is mated to the standard 4.7L V8, while a new six-speed ECT automatic is part of the powertrain package when the available 5.7L V8 is selected.

This transmission benefits from hydraulic pressures that are very carefully controlled for smoother shifts, and from highly accurate gear-tooth surfaces that help ensure low noise levels. A Tow/Haul mode that extends use of the lower gear ratios also is part of this transmission's package.

Both transmissions are controlled by floor-mounted shifters and are equipped with torque converters that use Toyota's flexible lock-up control for enhanced fuel efficiency, and both transmissions can be shifted sequentially.

Additionally, the six-speed transmission's torque converter will lock up in fourth and fifth gear, as well as in sixth gear.

On four-wheel-drive models, a two-speed transfer case that contains a lockable Torsen limited-slip differential is used to transmit power to both the front and rear wheels. Interestingly, this transfer case, with its 1:1 high-range gear ratio and its 2.618:1 low-range gear ratio, uses a durable six-gear planetary ring instead of the more usual four-gear ring. The transfer case is shifted electronically via a rotary knob within easy reach of the driver, and it locks with the push of a button. High-capacity universal joints are used in the drive line to accommodate the available power of the engines.

The front and rear differentials are larger for added strength and measure 8.7 inches in diameter (front) and 10.0 inches (rear). The standard differential ratio is 3.909:1, with an optional 4.3:1 ratio available as part of Sequoia's towing package.

Chassis and Suspension
To improve ride comfort and overall vehicle dynamics, the 2008 Sequoia was given an all-new platform that features independent suspension at both front and rear. This new suspension not only provides unparalleled ride, handling and straight-line stability, but it also equips Sequoia with an available towing capacity of 10,000 lbs which puts Sequoia among the leaders in its class.

To provide a vehicle that will not fatigue its driver or passengers even on very long trips, Sequoia engineers focused on improved ride comfort and quietness, and on enhanced straight-line stability.

The new independent suspension employs upper and lower A-arms at each wheel, tubular shock absorbers, coil springs and a hollow tubular antiroll bar. It provides not only improved chassis dynamics thanks to reduced unsprung weight, but also a turning radius of about 19 feet, the tightest in Sequoia's class. Additionally, increased suspension travel and a newly developed upper front shock-absorber support and lower bushing help enhance ride quality.

An available air suspension package and Active Variable Suspension (AVS), with settings for comfort, normal and sport, improves the ride comfort and augments the Sequoia's ability to tow and haul heavy loads while maintaining an appropriate ride height and chassis attitude.

Larger tires and wheels were adopted to complete the chassis equation. Standard are 275/65R18 tires and 18-inch aluminum wheels, while 275/55R20 tires and specially designed 20-inch aluminum wheels are available.

Inside those wheels, Sequoia uses 13.9-inch ventilated disc brakes up front and 13.6-inch ventilated disc brakes at the rear. To improve braking performance and fade resistance, calipers with four opposed pistons - two per side - are used for the front brakes. The Anti-lock Braking System is equipped with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and Brake Assist.

Design and Styling
Working from a design theme articulated as "Rugged and Advanced," engineers gave the 2008 Sequoia a new, larger body size and a tough new look.

Sequoia's overall length, width and height are increased, its wheelbase lengthened and its front and rear track is widened. Front and rear overhang, meanwhile, is reduced.

Larger headlamps, with available headlamp washers, were adopted, as were large side-view mirrors that are available with power retraction, automatic glare-resistance, puddle lamps, turn-signal lamps, position memory and reverse-linked tilt functions.

This new design achieves a drag coefficient of 0.35, which means the vehicle offers exceptional aerodynamic characteristics and low wind-noise. The vehicle's mirrors, wipers, A-pillar and roof header are shaped to maximize aerodynamic efficiency and minimize wind noise.

The Sequoia's underside, meanwhile, also is optimized to reduce drag and wind noise, and to help improve directional stability.

Interior and Comfort
A primary design goal was to ensure that the 2008 Sequoia is useful and user-friendly and its driver and passengers, regardless of size and build, have sufficient space to ride in comfort. To that end, the Sequoia's cabin interior is longer, wider and taller than the previous Sequoia. Indeed, space sufficient to comfortably accommodate people well above normal height is available in each of Sequoia's eight seats.

Additionally, the second-row seat is equipped with a sliding-type seat adjuster that allows the seat to be adjusted for added comfort when the number of passengers is limited. For the third-row seat, an advanced seat-cushion linkage reclining mechanism is adopted that elevates rear passenger comfort to new levels.

Designers took special care to create comfortable, spacious seats in all positions. To help achieve this goal, a new seat framework, with increased seat width, was adopted. The driver's seat is standard-equipped with power lumbar support, and available as an option on the front passenger seat. Seat heaters are available for the driver seat and front passenger seat.

The second-row seats are split 40:20:40, and separate captain's seats are available. The second-row seat is equipped with a seat-slide mechanism that offers an adjustment range of 5.9 inches.

This seat can also be folded down flat and uses an easy-slide action to allow passenger access to the third-row seat. A seat heater is standard with the Platinum grade, and child-seat restraints for the second row are standard on all grades.

The third-row seat is split 60:40, and it also has a seatback reclining mechanism. It too can be easily folded flat.

The interior surrounding these seats is a model of comfort, safety and efficiency and is filled with thoughtful details. For example, the rear-view mirror incorporates an automatic electrochromic function, and also incorporates a compass, a map lamp and garage-door-opener functions. Other thoughtful features include automatic up-and-down and jam protection for the front power windows, a back-door power window with automatic up-and-down, jam protection, and an available power back door equipped with an easy-closer and remote-control functions. An illuminated entry system is standard.

For the dash, designers incorporated a modular instrument panel structure and they endowed it, and other interior surfaces, with a finish and feel worthy of comparison with similar surfaces in the finest luxury cars. Rings around Sequoia's Optitron gauges, and the climate control knobs, are chrome colored, and panels on the dash are silver metallic.

A newly designed four-spoke steering wheel contains controls for the Sequoia's air conditioning system, Bluetooth®-capable phones and other functions. It is connected to a newly developed steering column with a floating intermediate shaft that helps enhance steering feel and minimize noise and vibration. This steering column offers both tilt and telescopic functions, and a powered memory feature is available.

The 2008 Sequoia offers automatic air-conditioning with solar sensors and automatic left and right independent temperature controls. Rear air conditioning also is part of the package. This three-zone system uses a newly developed multi-layer filter to ensure that air brought into the passenger cabin is as free from dust, pollen and other contaminants as possible.

To help keep driver and passengers entertained, the Sequoia's audio system is improved and speaker placement is optimized. An AM/FM/CD sound system with eight speakers is standard for SR5. Also available is a 660-watt JBL Synthesis 14-speaker system. The JBL systems are Bluetooth-compatible and are capable of receiving XM Satellite radio with the appropriately installed equipment and service subscription. Both are equipped with MP3 ports. A new-generation navigation system with a new menu screen and an improved seven-inch display is available for 2008.

To enhance the travel experience for passengers in the second- and third-row seats, a Rear Seat Entertainment system with a DVD player and nine-inch display is available.

The same efficient packaging that allows class-leading interior comfort, allows hauling pieces up to 11 feet in length.

Throughout, there are eight extra-large cup holders and eight bottle holders, and designers also took steps to enhance Sequoia's availability of storage spaces. For instance, the glove box now measures 9.5 liters, and the second-row console box will hold 12 CDs or four DVD cases.

For the seating surfaces, both leather and an easy-to-clean fabric are available. Three interior colors are available, one of which is new. The new one is Red Rock/Black, available only in the Platinum grade, while the others are Gray and Sand Beige.

Safety
The 2008 Sequoia employs active and passive safety features to help provide protection for vehicle occupants. Sequoia is equipped with Toyota's STAR Safety System, which includes VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), and TRAC (Traction Control) (2WD models) or A-TRAC (Active-Traction Control) (4WD models), ABS (antilock braking) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution) and Brake Assist.

Sequoia's collision safety performance is enhanced by driver and passenger seat-mounted side- and side- curtain airbags that are included as standard equipment; and roll-sensing side curtain airbags that extend from the front seat to the third-row seat.

Interesting Details
The Sequoia's designers and engineers went to extraordinary lengths to make sure the vehicle is as comfortable to ride in and convenient to use as possible. As an example of the conveniences they specified, an available electrically driven full-flat tilting mechanism was developed for the third-row seat. When the seat is folded into its flat position, large baggage or cargo can be loaded without removing the seat.

Every small detail was carefully planned in the effort to ensure concerns of quality were attended to. For instance, engineers worked to improve the operational feel of the Sequoia's switches. They specified large door handles that would be easy to use, and located the handles at an optimum height.

Closing the back door requires less force than was required on previous models, and the back-door glass can be opened and closed for easy loading or ventilation with the turn of a key. Also included are handy hooks in the cargo section from which to hang grocery bags.

The rear door opening angle is 10 degrees wider than the previous model, providing easier passenger ingress/egress and child seat installation.
An intuitive parking assist system is optionally available. This uses sensors and an audible warning to alert the driver of the position of solid objects, and their distance from the vehicle.

As a final interesting touch, the Sequoia's towing hitch is integrated into the frame as a single unit.

Warranty
Toyota's 36-month/36,000 mile new-vehicle limited warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60 months/60,000 miles and corrosion perforation for 60 months with no mileage limitations.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Vector WX-8 in the Flesh ]]> When I stop and reflect about why I spend more time thinking about cars than I do, well, anything, one of the defining, transcendental moments has to be when I was around 12-years-old with my father at the LA Auto Show. In one hall they had the "other" makes including the Lamborghini LM002 and my absolute favorite, the Vector W2. And they were next to each other. And I was 12. And nothing in the entire world could have been any better. In any way. Well friends, fast forward two decades and here I am covering the 2007 LA Auto Show. While Lamborghini refuses to man up and give us a Murcielago-engined SUV, motherlovin' Vector is back with their WX-8. The life cycle completed, there is nothing more for me to do. Well... actually, there are a few people I'd like to punch in the mouth and I few women I'd to like to snuggle with, but I mean new Vector? Are we serious? Jump to read some glorious verbiage that had the Postfather in stitches.

I think what we like most about the new WX-8 and the not-quite-real — yet — A-WX-8 is that the business plan seems to have been dreamed up by a 12-year-old boy. The Bugatti Veyron has 1,001 hp? Fuck you, we got "over 2,000 hp!" No, really, they are going to build a 2,000+ hp A-WX-8. Check out some of theses nuggets from their propaganda:

Any comparison with existing foreign or domestic super cars is irrelevant

...[media outlets] will desire to expose this new "UAO" (Unapproachable Object) to their affluent audiences.

Will alter the expectations and change the standards of the ultimate group of automobiles currently categorized as supercars.

The new Vector Avtech WX-8 is intended to raise this bar so high that other companies will be hard pressed to reach or even approach the apex of performance achievable by the ultimate high-end 300 mph capable model...

The basis for the new Vector WX-8's extreme performance is the dual supercharged/or turbocharged custom manufactured high output cylinder-block and heads recently created by classified & confidential suppliers.
The best part? It just goes on from there. Man... we're in love. Mr. Wiegert, Jalopnik wishes you more luck than you could possibly imagine.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: 2009 Jaguar XF US Reveal ]]> Yeah, so the Jaguar XF is here. On sale in March of '08, the 300 hp sedan will set you back $49,975 and the supercharged, 400 hp version cost you an additional $13,000. However, it will muscle its way to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. We like that. Sadly, despite designer Ian Callum's best efforts the looks still leave us cold. Well, not exactly cold, but viewed from the side, everything behind the B-pillar looks like an Infiniti G and the short front fenders scream FWD. The headlamps are sharp and the taillights scream Aston Martin, which we think we like. Yeah, so... anyone see that French Tatra?

<![CDATA[ Inside Chrysler's Two-Mode HEMI Hybrid System ]]> On the outside, a hybrid is usually just a badge and a smug driver. On the inside is where all the fun happens. In that spirit we bring you the internals of the Chrysler version of the two-mode hybrid system (after a long day of previews and reveals we thought you deserved a little mechanical pr0n). This system is considered "two-mode" because it utilizes a continuously variable transmission with two modes. When going slow and not carrying much the hybrid can use electric power, engine power or duel power to propel itself. At high speeds or with high loads, the system switches to full power from the HEMI with the electric assist. Full details below:

The Advanced Two-mode Hybrid System

Chrysler's advanced, state-of-the-art two-mode full hybrid system — developed in partnership with General Motors, Mercedes-Benz and The BMW Group — integrates proven automatic-transmission technology with a patented hybrid-electric drive system to deliver the world's first two-mode full hybrid.

As a result of low- and high-speed electric continuously variable transmission (ECVT) modes, the system is defined as a "two-mode hybrid." In addition, the sophisticated fuel-saving system incorporates four fixed-gear ratios for high efficiency and power-handling capabilities. During the two ECVT modes, the system can use the electric motors for acceleration, improving fuel economy, or for regenerative braking to utilize energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use.

The system's two modes are optimized for city and highway driving.

In the first mode — at low speed and with light loads — the vehicle can operate in three ways:

• Electric power only

• Engine power only

• Any combination of engine and electric power

The two-mode hybrid provides all of the fuel-saving benefits of a full-hybrid system, including electric-only operation. In this mode, the engine is "shut off," with the vehicle moving under electric-only power at low speed. The result is a significant reduction in fuel consumption in heavy stop-and-go traffic.

The second mode is used primarily at highway speeds. In addition to electric assist, the second mode provides full power from the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 when conditions demand it, such as when passing, pulling a trailer or climbing a steep grade.

The two-mode programming integrates a host of technologies to improve efficiency including Chrysler's patented Multi-displacement System (MDS), standard on the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8.

An elegantly complex design, the two-mode system also allows for more proliferate packaging via compact and powerful electric motors designed to fit within a conventional automatic transmission space — a clear efficiency advantage compared with today's typical single-mode systems that rely on much larger electric motors.

A sophisticated controller determines when the vehicle should operate in the first or second mode. Input from the controller determines the necessary torque for the driving conditions and sends a corresponding command to the engine and electric motors. The engine and electric motors transfer torque to a series of gears in the transmission, which multiply torque similar to a conventional automatic transmission to propel the vehicle. Unlike conventional continuously variable transmissions, however, the two-mode full hybrid's electrically controlled system uses no mechanical belts or bands. Shifts between the two modes are synchronous — meaning no engine speed changes are necessary for the mode shift to occur — resulting in seamless accelerations.

The 300-volt battery pack provides electric power for the system, and is designed to fit in the vehicle without compromising passenger space. A rectifier located under the vehicle's hood converts AC to DC, to power conventional 12-volt accessories, such as interior lighting, climate control and the audio system. The vehicle's internal-combustion engine efficiently maintains the battery pack.

Hybrid Development Center

Located in Troy, Mich., the Hybrid Development Center (General Motors, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz and The BMW Group) jointly developed the overall modular two-mode hybrid system and the individual components: electric motors, transmission, high-voltage battery, high-performance electronics, wiring, safety systems, energy management and hybrid-system control units. In addition, the Hybrid Development Center is responsible for system integration and project management.

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: A French Tatra called Faurecia ]]> Cars like this make me stop and think. I mean, either Jalopnik is sending out strange vibrations, or there are other people in the world who think the only thing better than a Czech-built Tatra is a French-built one. Well, here's the rub — it's not actually a production vehicle. The Faurecia is a design study. And here's the odd part, and it's going to upset you, but only at first. The engine ain't in the trunk no more. I know, I know, sacrilege. However, there is method to this seeming madness. The rear seats fold down and the trunk extends out. Super Franco-Czech storage possibilities! More later on the tres-nifty interior, but this blasphemous sucker is one of the very best looking cars at the show. OK, we're off to cover the new FWD Ferrari minivan. Au revoir!

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Hemi Hybrids Revealed ]]> Here's a question for you: how do you feel about a hybrid Hemi? Somebody please answer for Danio as I know his head just popped. With the electric motor, both vehicles can summon up 385 horsepower. No mention of torque (either at the reveal or in the press release) but both "two-mode" big 'ol hybrid boys showed up towing toys. The Chrysler got a horse trailer while the Dodge had a boat. ChryslerCerebusDodge is claiming that gas mileage in the city will be up by 40% while highway numbers will improve by 25%. The actual numbers? ChryslerCerebusDodge didn't say, which of course reminds me of an old Simpsons bit. "Each newspaper contains a certain percent of recycled paper." To which Lisa asks, "What percent is that?" The answer, "Zero. Zero's a percent."

<![CDATA[ LA Auto Show: Hyundai RWD Coupe ]]> UPDATE: First shots are live! Brian Lam and I are here on the floor of the LA Convention Center waiting for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe to...oh there it goes. Once my eyes adjusted to the metal-flake, nuclear-sunrise orange initial impressions were RSX headlights on a Lexus IS wedge. Of course, the special thing is that Hyundai promises the coupe to be the cheapest 300HP RWD sports car ever, not just out of Seoul — we'll see if it'll beat a Mustang in pricing. The Viper-esque hood vents and carbon fiber bits won't make it to final for costs obviously, but the thought is certainly nice. The shapely triangle window, fifth relative of custom van glass, is staying.

Press release after the jump and we'll have video up shortly.

Hyundai unveils rear-wheel Drive Concept Genesis Coupe

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 14, 2007 - Hyundai unveiled its highly anticipated Concept Genesis Coupe during a press conference at the Los Angeles International Auto Show today. The concept car heralds the introduction of an all-new, rear-wheel drive 2 + 2 sports coupe scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009. Following the introduction earlier this year of the Concept Genesis sedan, Concept Genesis Coupe signals Hyundai's second step in broadening its appeal to driving enthusiasts.

The Sonic Orange concept is complemented by a Ballistic Black carbon fiber hood, roof and ground effects for reduced weight. Strong hints of the production version are highlighted in its "Z" bodylines and powerful curves. When the production sports coupe arrives, it likely will be the most affordable 300+ horsepower car on the market, and the most dynamic performance car yet from Hyundai.

Concept Genesis Coupe
"Concept Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling, most emotional Hyundai yet," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "When it hits the market in early 2009, we aim to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37, at prices more like Mitsubishi Eclipse."

DESIGN PROCESS
"The mission for Concept Genesis Coupe was to create a pure performance car with a design that would capture the imagination of hardcore automotive enthusiasts," said Joel Piaskowski, chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. "With its aggressive look from just about any angle, I think we have been able to do that."

Designers used the Day Light Opening (DLO — a designer's term for the side glass) from the HCD9 Talus Concept on the Concept Genesis Coupe.

The HCD8 sport tourer concept's sensual body forms influenced the overall design direction of Concept Genesis Coupe.
The powerful curves, surface detail and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the same underlying inspiration that guided two earlier, well-received concepts: the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports tourer. The undulating beltline borrowed from the Talus adds intrigue while enhancing outward visibility for both the driver and rear passengers. The HCD8 sports tourer's sensual body forms influenced the overall design theme while also providing direction for the concept's assertive headlight and taillight designs.
The look of Concept Genesis Coupe was in part inspired by LeMan's rac
