Audi Announces Supercharged 3.0L TFSI V6, Officially

We imagined the "T" in any Audi engine nomenclature would always and forever mean "turbo." Apparently, such is not the case, as Audi has officially revealed the 3.0L TFSI, which is in fact supercharged. The confusingly named new motor, which we first caught wind of in a report about a supercharged mill for the next Audi S4, will most likely be seen first in the 2009 Audi A6, making 290 HP and 310 lb.ft. of torque. Using a Roots-style supercharger, a front-mounted intercooler and direct injection, the new 3.0 will be Audi's high-tech showpiece, so expect to hear a lot more about it in the future. 1988 Mitsubishi L300

You still see a few of the mid-engined 80s Toyota vans around, but when was the last time you saw a Mitsubishi van of that era? Very few of these things were sold in North America back in the day; in fact, I can't even figure out what Mitsubishi called this vehicle here; was it marketed as the plain ol' Mitsubishi Van? Van Wagon? In any case, the 1988 Mitsubishi van is one seriously rare machine, and so it has earned its place in DOTS Truck Monday.

Automobile Mag's Top List Of Road Trip Vehicles Gives Sprinter The Nod, Finds Way Into Our Hearts

Oh, boy: Another hot summer day, another list of top vehicles for a road trip. Whereas Kelley Blue Book's top road trip cars list — the last such list we had to endure — was one of the more strange groupings we've seen, today's list from Automobile is absolutely sexy. What, you don't think the Sprinter's sexy? You ever seen the Mercedes diesel it's got under the hood? We're not kidding when we say it's like butter. Really thick, viscous, black butter, but butter nonetheless. Hit the jump for the full list. More »

Audi R8 V10 Caught Testing On Nurburgring

Adding to our recent video proof of the new R8 V10, plus still shots, we've got even more 5.2L Audi goodness. And just to prove they're serious, Audi's giving the new beast a shakedown on everyone's favorite test track, the Nurburgring Nordschleife. While we don't have lap times yet, rest assured that we're working on arranging a triple shootout with the Zonda F and the Nissan GT-R. Hey, a guy can dream.

2009 Ford F-150 5.4-Liter V8 Power Ratings Leaked On To Internet

Someone attending a Ford dealer training session for the new half-ton 2009 Ford F-150 in Michigan took a picture of an information placard revealing the six-speed automatic 5.4-liter V8 will achieve 320 horses at 5,200-rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 3,500-rpm. These new numbers, a modest improvement over the 2008 Ford F-150's 300-hp at 5,000-rpm / 365 lb-ft at 3,750-rpm, come after Ford let slip the numbers on the upcoming 4.4-liter Ford diesel V8 we'll see in the 2010.5 Ford F-150 and the 2010 Ford Super Duty. Sir Paul McCartney Horrified His LS600h Flown To UK, Challenges Lexus To A Joust

Sir Paul McCartney better hope that the carbon emissions you take aren't equal to the emissions you make as his Lexus LS600hL was flown to him by Lexus, as opposed to merely putting it on a boat. According to reports, the Lexus hybrid flagship, which was a gift to singer/vegan activist, made the 7,000-mile trip on a Korean Air flight. This resulted in a carbon footprint of 38,050 kilograms, as opposed to just 397 kilograms if transported by ship. The director of CO2Balance.com claimed the trip was the equivalent of the car driving around the earth six times. Oops.

Willys Go Devil: Engine Of Democracy!

It's been a while since we had a Workhorse Engine of the Day; the problem with that series was that many great engines don't quite rate "workhorse" status (whatever that is) and we kept getting all bogged down in debates over whether a given engine really belonged. But we love great engines, regardless of equine semblance, so we're coming back at you with a new/improved series with an edgy, highly original name: Engine of the Day! Today we're looking at a flathead four-banger that did more to crush Nazism than any engine (with the possible exception of the V-2 diesel in the T-34 tank): the Willys L134 Go Devil! Thanks to BrandonValentine (and others) for the suggestion. [Wikipedia]

Road & Track's Thomas L. Bryant Stepping Down As Editor-in-Chief?

Our sources atop the gilded New York offices of the surrender monkeys at French-owned Hachette Filipacchi Media tell us a mass email went out only moments ago to internal staff at Road & Track. The e-mail informed employees of the ampersand-happy magazine of news Thomas Bryant will be stepping down from his position of Vice President & Editor in Chief but remaining a columnist. We'll be awaiting official word — that it's not an April Fools' Day hoax.

What's Your Favorite Special Edition Trend Car?

Automakers love to tie their cars to other companies, sports teams and trends. There was a time when you couldn't walk three feet without bumping into an Eddie Bauer Edition Explorer or an L.L. Bean Subaru Outback. We're personally fond of the Jeans Edition VW, which is just that much cooler than the Warriors in Pink Mustangs. And this isn't just an American experience, even French newspapers have custom Renaults. More »

Jalopnik Plays Midnight Club Los Angeles

After checking out the new S5S Raptor and the Dan Gurney Mustang at the Saleen stand, we decided to get behind the wheel controller and a have a test drive of a DUB-customized S302 Extreme— in the upcoming Midnight Club Los Angeles video game. We thought it was a good opportunity let our oldest most life-experienced Jalop, Matt DeBord, have a hand at the game. He knows LA pretty well, so we figured he'd have an advantage driving through the virtual city of angels. We soon found that while Matt may have life experience, he doesn't have so much experience with modern video games. Maybe we should have someone else here give the game a proper review. More »

America, Truck Yeah! Joint Light Tactical Vehicle

Remember when we went into the current conflict abroad with, lets say, less than proper equipment for the guerrilla warfare situation our ground troops would find? Remember how the quick fix was to up-armor the existing Humvee's to protect the troops inside as best as could be managed? Well, this is a possible long term solution. Currently a contender in the bid phase for the contract to provide the next generation of light infantry and cargo support, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) is a whopping slice of armor toting badass. Sporting a V-hull design similar to the one found on the RG33L MRRMV, the JLTV offers protection and capabilities which would make the venerable old Humvee blush with envy.

RG33L Mine Resistant Recovery and Maintenance Vehicle

It's not often you get to play around with giant prototype military tow trucks, but then again, you don't get to drive robotic tanks every day either. The RG33L MRRMV is a platform modified version of the now in theater MRAP, or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle. Basically a big-ass truck with a V-shaped blast force dissipating hull. This particular model is equipped with all the goodies necessary to go out and drag home up to forty tons of disabled vehicle. The extending boom crane can is capable of deadlifting twenty two tons.

2007 Audi A6 3.2L, Part Three

Why you should buy this car:
Buy this car if you want a large luxury sedan with impeccable fit and finish, cool toys and one of the smoothest powertrains you'll ever have the pleasure of piloting. When you order one, be very careful picking your color and wheels. There's a tan A6 with the base model wheels around where I live and it looks terrible. It was hard to believe we were driving the same car at first. The phantom black pearl effect paint job is the cream of the crop. Silver and Night Blue Pearl effect work pretty well too. For wheels, make sure you cough up another grand or so for the optional 18, or 19, inchers.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
If you want a big, luxury sedan that can do 155 MPH or more, this is not the car for you. If you want a car that looks like its going 155 MPH while sitting still, this is not the car for you. Buyers looking for those things would be settling for the V6 model. Don't settle. Just sell a few more shares of your Apple stock and get the S6 or the BMW M5.

2007 Audi A6 3.2L, Part Two

Exterior Design: ***
It works and it doesn't. While this luxury sedan has nice, though moderately conservative, styling on the front and rear end, the A6's profile is something Ingolstadt must fix. It is this car's Achilles heel.

Interior Design: ****
The spot you conduct your asphalt assault from is a really nice place to be. The leather interior in the amaretto-and-black color scheme is highly recommended. The seats have several power adjustments, and six levels of heating help you settle in for your drive. When the sun sets, the interior starts to feel a little like an ultra lounge. The controls glow red while white accent lighting comes on under the seats and on the door panels. The overall fit and finish is of a quality most other OEM's should strive to match.

2007 Audi A6 3.2L, Part One

Within the first five minutes of my week-long test-drive of the 3.2-liter 2007 Audi A6, I was pretty sure a speeding ticket was on the way. Turns out I was almost right. Tearing down a road at a rate somewhat above the posted limit, I came around a bend to see a sheriff approaching me in the other lane. I knew I was screwed. But rather than pulling me over, he just motioned out his window for me to slow down. If you're reading this Mr. Understanding Sheriff Guy, remind me to buy you a beer.

Hypermiling the 2007 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi and 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 TDI

We'll admit it, we've been teases this week. Two forbidden diesels and nary a whisper of fuel economy. Well, today you get the goods. We aren't going to give you the standard "this is what we got in the city and this is what we got on the highway" spiel, because you can find that anywhere. Officially, the Civic does about 41/56, Q7 does 19/21. Booorrr-ing. What we're going to do is hypermile these cars. Although, much like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, we're not sure you can handle the truth. To be perfectly honest, we were shocked ourselves. Shocked and giddy, like a bunch of little girls splashing around in a pool of glistening diesel. Before you click through and watch the video, we need to lay down some facts. What we did can be repeated by anyone. There were no tricks, no cheats. Hell, we didn't even make that much of an effort. The footage you're about to enjoy isn't necessarily exciting, but from an engineering standpoint, it's smack-you-in-the-mouth amazing.

2007 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi

While the 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 TDI admittedly lived at the higher end of the impossible-to-get-in- the-US diesel market, todays review subject is a far more attainable unattainable. The 2007 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi doesn't just have a power train we all lust after—it's a platform we don't see in the domestic market. We're going try to limit direct comparison against our domestic version and consider this car on its own merits. Those merits will have to stand up at the premium compact price-point, though, since if the U.S. market did get this car, it would certainly be planted firmly in that segment.

Ten Page Gallery of Internet-Themed Vanity Plates

We can't tell which is more sad, the ten pages of vanity plates all referencing some form of geekdom and Internet speak; or the fact that we could interpret almost all of them right away.
