I think it's commendable when a vehicle can be had with no radio or a/c. But I represent a very small portion of the market, and the question of my sanity is rather subjective.
@skitter: the damnelantra™ is kickin with no radio, and im am seriously considering axing the ac too. just need to make sure it wont mess up any of the other belts and non-sense
and im another $4 a gallon summer away from ripping out the back seat
To be fair, if you don't mind something offensively ugly, the Elantra's not a bad pick. The Versa and Yaris are basically today's Tercel; not a long-term car, but also not bad.
If I wasn't in it for the fuel economy (which, if you buy an Aveo, you're clearly not) I'd get a used Taurus. Practically free, and it'll last till 120k or so before needing a transmission, and be fine from then 'till you junk it.
if you buy someone a damnelantra™ for christmas you are a terrible terrible person. and i deeply hope that the Krampus inflicts pain and suffering upon you.

Pfft... I got that beat. Get this, up here in Canada, they're still selling Chevrolet Uplanders and Pontiac Montanas. Production just ended, but there's lots on the lots.
You can get an Uplander for $24390, and my local dealer is giving $10,000 off. That leaves you at $14,390, but that's Canadian. It comes to roughly $10,792 in US dollars. And that comes with a 240hp V6, automatic transmission, A/C, power windows and locks... It's CRAZY cheap.
Plus, you can use $2000 GM points.
Sure, they're a little bland, but for hauling a family, it's an amazing deal.
I'm considering picking up my wife a fully loaded Montana for $20,450 or $15,333US. And that's got the good seats, remote start, side bags, power side door, sport suspension with rear air bags, etc... yeah, minivans are boring, but have YOU tried to put a rear facing child seat in the back of a small car? This is all the utility and luxury of a mid size SUV for half the price.
@Robert Lefebvre: If you need a minivan, and don't mind an offensively ugly steaming pile (which is all you'd get for ten grand anyway), that's a hell of a deal.
If you have 10k worth of disposable income and choose to blow it on a heap of metal with less bhp than a pair of Rollerblades, you should be shot on sight.
@graverobber- Facebook 'em Danno: A nice boxter for $10000 from someone with 100% positive feedback for selling 48 different baseball cards and collectible coins.
Somehow, I doubt the truthiness of this fleaBay seller...

@Parksberg: I get the impression from a lot of posters here that their idea of "cheap" is a lot,LOT higher than my miserable idea of "cheap" :) A lot of Jalops seem secretly pretty well-to-do.
@Landau_Calrissian: I think you misunderstood. When you say cheap new car, it's comparatively cheap, not actually cheap. Take the Accent, for example. It's cheap for a new car, but like what a lot of Jalops are saying, you don't get much for that amount of money. I mean, we're the ones who follow stories on crazy people racing $500 race cars. Hehe.
@Landau_Calrissian: Closer to my idea of cheap would be 10 cars for under $12,000 TOTAL instead of 10 cars under $12,000. Insurance might get pricey (maybe you could get a fleet discount), but it sure would be more fun.
