Cutlass: A Short Film About A Special Oldsmobile |

My Grandma Barrett underwrote the purchase of a 25k mile 1980 Cutlass 4dr., power everything and the ubiquitous (and litigious) Chevy 305 V8. Desert Sand with tan fabric seating, it had been owned by a doctor's wife. Total creampuff, and my mom envied it over her 1973 220D Benz.
The V8 was too heavy, so the front suspension required frequent work, and the tiny sidepost ignition battery would last 18 months tops, but I kept that Cutlass until mid-1990 I still have fond memories (and an Oldsmobile key fob from Pep-Boys).

My high school was awash in Corollas and Jettas. The girl who had a Passat crashed it into a cop car while pulling out of the parking lot.
Very few students at my school bothered with old or interesting cars. One of my friends had an '85 Corvette that shorted out if you honked the horn, and a couple of guys had old Mustangs and Camaros, but I only remember one girl who drove something truly interesting, and that was the one with a yellow '67 El Camino.
Hell, even my principal drove a beige PT Cruiser.

Had to think about that one. In '79 the hot cars in my school were:
*Camaro, esp Z28 (lots of these)
*Firebirds but no T/A's, primarily because they were too expensive
*Malaise Mustangs, 71-73 were popular but plenty of II's around, sadly.
*El Camino's, only a few but everyone liked them.
*Yamaha QT-50 with a Supertrapp muffler
*Honda PA50 moped with a long enough luggage rack so your buddy could ride on the back, or your could sit back there on buddy pegs and do wheelies thru the quad.

On the other hand, it's nice to see Chevy Chase getting work, even if it's two lines (and that part on Chuck).

I'll not argue quality here, because I don't like to lose, but the shared crappiness we all endured is one of the pillars of the Malaise.
Solara, not so much, though I can't find a single thing wrong with them.

No doubt the collective memories of Americans of another certain age will be filled with Japanese blandmobiles.

On a very slightly relevant note, I would like to know your jalopinions. 2010 Chevy Camaro or 2010 Mustang for a college student?
