Tangentially related, to junk yards and LeMons:

My $500 Jaguar had its first catastrophic failure. Seized fan clutch allowed too much rpm for the 22 year old plastic fan.

At just over 4k, the fan blew apart, severing a coolant line, mangling the fan shroud, and denting the hood from the underside.

I think it'll either get the steel fan from the '77 Jaguar V12 that I have lying around, or the electric fan from the '84 Fiero (I have lying around).

@smalleyxb122: You're really lucky the fan didn't destroy the radiator. When the waterpump on my 280ZX failed as a result of the fan clutch going, the fan came forward and destroyed the brand new radiator I'd just put in.

@Plecostomus supports Ford and the Dodge: I'm certainly glad that it didn't get the radiator. Not that I'm particularly happy with the actual outcome.

I just tested the electric Fiero fan, and it looks like it'll move plenty of air. If I can get the old fan clutch out of the way easy enough (without removing too much other stuff), The Jag will have a Fiero fan sometime tomorrow.

@P161911 now with M POWER!: In fairness, the fan must have had some structural integrity issues, because even with the stuck clutch, it shouldn't have blown apart at only 4k rpm, but the seized clutch certainly wasn't helping matters.

    I WANT A JALOPNIK STICKER

Murilee, also, what are your suggestions on switches? Need a good one that lights up when powered. Was thinking the hazard switch off this VW would look badass, but is to bulky and big:

This is to activate a junk yard flame thrower setup on the CST10... Basically, switch fires a relay that fires up a pair of ignition coils that have spark plugs leading to my tail pipes, which if I can mock up a test one and the setup works, will be side pipes. I have a manual chock and can get the car to barely run at idle it's so rich, not to mention slamming it shut while revving to get the needed fuel out.

Triangular button (push), toggle, don't matter as long as it's relatively compact and lights up. I can rig it to light up when activated. I found that a lot of Japanese cars have little square ones in the middle of the dash, but I had little time to explore... I only came for a starter for the Laser and to check the cabs on the 67-72 trucks he had

Murilee, that is awesome. But it's missing something. Something that would take it up to a whole new plane of awesomeness.

A couple years back, for Halloween, my uncle rigged up a huge, skull-topped jack-in-the-box to pop up every time some put pressure on a loose brick in the walk way that had a little pressure pad hidden underneath it.

This thing needs a jack-in-the-box wired to spring out at the drop of the Frankenstein switch. It would be the last stage of awesomeness for your alarm.

@pauljones: I'm pretty sure it also needs a rotating flashing light on top, like one of the orange ones off a utility truck. I'm not sure how often those pop up in junkyards, though, most of the time by the point a utility truck gets to a junkyard, everything that comes off without using a cutting torch is already gone, at least around here.

A jack in the box on top would be useful, but only if you make the miscreant active it themselves, or maybe have the jack in the box pop out of a seperate box, just sitting there unassumingly near the main alarm.
