    Getting suspended from NASCAR isn't normal.

    Well, he says it was a combination of Adderall (an amphetamine-based ADD drug) and Claritin-D (which I think contains ephedrine), so his false positive claim isn't as lame as one might think. There are more sophisticated (and much more expensive) tests that should be able to confirm one way or the other.

    You know I usually make fun of NASCAR, but as a baseball fan I have to say that I wish baseball was more like NASCAR in this aspect. If a player tests positive for roids, ban them for life. Good job NASCAR.

    @Timtoolman, now with power tools!:

    Mayfield was suspended a few weeks back, but NASCAR never confirmed what the substance was that got him suspended. Says he took a double dose of Claritin (ironically the official allergy medicine of NASCAR) during the Richmond weekend because of bad allergies, but his other claim was that he was taking Adderall for supposed ADD.

    The Claritin I could halfway understand, but the Adderall?? Dude's a little old to be taking Adderall for ADD.

    What many people are forgetting is he is banned for LIFE! He claims a drug interaction, however this is still a very serious claim. I'm very proud that Nascar acted quickly and has zero tolerance. Lots of families watch Nascar. That's how I got into it... watching it with the family.

    @jhwnissan: I agree with DonLuc... I lost interest when it started to become so politically correct and even more consumer-driven... I have no problem with people wanting it to be something that the whole family can enjoy, but I don't like how it is presented in such a fashion as to walk on eggshells so as not to offend a single person. Back in the older times of NASCAR, the drivers were crude, drunk roughnecks that had no problem saying exactly what they thought and backing it up with their fist if they needed to. It bugs me when I watch interviews with the drivers when you can tell that they are saying what NASCAR wants them to say, instead of really saying what they think...

    But, I digress... Because to be completely honest, I don't see the point in NASCAR as it is currently anyways. It seems nothing more than a clever advertising ploy, and little more. Nothing stock about the cars, very little technology that serves to better production vehicles, and politics that seem to be becoming more and more prevelant with each passing season. I'll take LeMons instead. Seems more like racing for the right reasons there. For the sport of it...

    @VonPinto: Like monster truck racing before it, NASCAR seems to be following the example of "professional" wrestling with the manufactured rivalries and pandering to the lowest common denominators in the fanbase. This is a path they started on in the sixties, when teams were first allowed to build cars up from scratch instead of being required to start with an off the line production car (or at least a factory body in white), and retain exact stock dimensions and contours. All other major stock appearing race series (WRC, Euro Touring Car, V8 Supercars, etc.) still require this as far as I know, and it's a good thing, IMO.

    @lilwillie heart clicks GM: Well, in the backwoods of the South the meth lab has pretty much replaced the moonshine still. I guess he was just trying to move NASCAR into the 21st century of illegal substances.

    I don't know the chemistry behind it, but I heard he was claiming it was "allergy medicine". Meth is made from Sudafed, so is this plausable at all?

    @P161911 now with M POWER!: Allergy medicines contain pseudo ephedrine, the main ingredient in cooking meth. His levels would have to be high enough to rule out normal medication (one would assume). If he didn't declare his medications before taking the test, that could lead to suspicion.

    My Great Grandpa got 2 years in Waupan Federal for running 'Shine. Prohibition was good money for the family back in the day.

    Just like Na$car, it ain't illegal if you ain't caught.

    So they've stepped up to Meth in the South. Does that make Moonshine the gateway drug to Meth?

    @lilwillie heart clicks GM: I think the step in between shine and meth is weed. From what I hear, there are some counties in the Smokey Mountains where marijuna is the #1 cash crop. The big difference is the land requirement. Guys will run a meth lab out of a motel room.

    No first hand experience with any of this, just what I read in the news and hear from cop friends.

    Having taken too much ritalin by accident before (I once forgot I'd already taken em and took my dose twice and got all tweekered out) and found that my judgement was lacking and though I was focused, I didn't drive better than I did without any methylphenidate in my system.
