unless it has extreme modification. this will not be put in the military. An extreme downgrade from the HUMMV performance and safety wise. Unless you don't need those aspects in the military, then go for it!

@Lotucris: The actual Wrangler J8 from Chrysler is stamped out in Toledo, shipped overseas and assembled in Egypt, then sold to local governments, military's, etc.

The J8 is an extreme downgrade over the HUMMV only if you must have outrageous fuel consumption, a large turning radius, wide footprint incapable of going down narrow alleys, complicated service requirements, a low top speed, crash safety designs from the 70's, extremely high purchase and parts costs, and the ability to drop it from a helicopter.

Not all military vehicles have to be capable of being retrofitted with armor plating.

@Lotucris: @Ben Wojdyla: I hate to be "that guy", but HMMWV for High Mobility (or Highly Mobile, depending on your source) Multi-Wheeled Vehicle. Though it is perfectly acceptable to call it a Humvee, as that name is trademarked by AM General.

To me, this says: "Hey, look at me! I've got a jeep like an Army guy!"

No, the Army guys are hip-deep in a sandhole right now defending your right to gas up your rig. Unless you've served... you're a poser.

What's the U.S. military gonna do with a military version of the Wrangler? Is this intended to fill the same role as the old CUCV? Because as far as combat vehicles go, we're fine with the HMMWV and the new MRAP. As far as an actual military vehicle, this is the answer to a question that no one asked.

The best plan I can see for this is to show up with some T&E Jeeps in pseudo-military trim, and then sell a bunch to the Jeep fanboys.

@elwood: The U.S. military doesn't and won't use these any time soon. Chryser makes them overseas for other governments. See here.

AEV is doing something though with this platform for unknown purposes. That is the question here.

I drive a 3.8 Sahara Unlimited and it could definitely use a little extra power. It depresses me when it has to drop into passing gear to move up a slight grade on the highway.

You can actually buy the J8 Dana 60 rear axle through Mopar, and rumor has it they're working on offering the 2.4L turbo diesel as a crate engine option.

@Mad_Science: The D60 is not bolt in unfortunately. It comes in box ready for bolt up to leaf springs. If you want to put it on your JK you'll need a bit of fab skills to get it under there.

Look again there quickdraw. These spy photos are of military jeeps with AEV badging on them. You can see the Dana 60, leaf springs, whatever the fuck that is coming out of the hood (snorkel?), non-factory paint, AND the two door is a stretched...

Better luck next time I suppose,

@este: So? You could build that in your garage. As was already mentioned, Mopar sells the D60. The rest of that is just 4-wheeling accessories.

If we're really talking military, where's the armor? Hookups for commo gear? Maybe even CTIS?

I could take a Toyota pickup, slap some rattle-can OD Green on it, and call it military but that doesn't make it so. Now, if AEV has a contract for this, then it's a different story. But I'd just argue that whatever military buying these has more money than sense.

They saw the signs about zombie invasions and figured they better get to work civilianizing the J8. Which, considering the speed with which they seem to have come out with and then civilianized the J8, I'm beginning to wonder if maybe AEV is creating the zombies so they will create their market.

Brilliant, if not a little devious.

Since AEV has a complete JK HEMI kit which would probably work in this, I would guess if they don't offer the diesel, they will at least offer a 5.7L and 6.1L hemi.
