I can't find it on the Net, but there was a 1968 commercial about a Rebel being driven the length of Baja California (a true 1967 exploit). It featured a stereotyped Mexican bandito saying "Joo theenk joo drive zee Baja, ha ha!". Those seemingly innocent non-PC times...
@Rockford Brodie: I shave my legs, not his ass!: Yeah, that movie came to my mind too as I saw that ad. Too bad AMC couldn't get Dom Deluise to be the director. The Alliance certainly counts as the "French Mistake".
I'm surprised they're advertising mileage. We had a 2-door 258 1983 Cherokee (last year for the big Cherokee) and it never really got 20 mpg, even when we yanked the awful automatic choke. I'd say 15-17 is average...the 5-spd manual might have done better, but we had a 4-spd. It was almost the slowest thing on the road, but off-road it was fun.
The replacement, a 5-spd Ford Explorer, easily got 22-23 highway.
Slow? Really? My old '74 had a metric ass-ton of torque, a short as hell first gear, and 401 cubes backing it. It was no SRT-8, but with a four-barrel, a new set of headers, and premium, it would run in a straight line with the early 350Z's. I wasn't stupid enough to try and take it into a corner, though.
Now that's a Jeep! These things looked awesome with the white wagon wheels and the Indian print on the door stripe. My cousin had one of this vintage and it was the ultimate cruiser to go to the ski slopes.
My old XJ with the 4.0 used to get 20mpg pretty much regardless of how or where I drove it. Until the rings started to go, and mileage dipped to single digits, just before it's demise at 215,000 miles.
I did get stuck in that Jeep, but it was only because the vacuum line had fallen off the front axle, so I only had 2wd.
I'd say the mpg numbers are possible. I mean, my beat to hell Gremlin, with the 4.2 (258, FTW!) would get about 21-22 on the high way with a putzy chrysler 904 3spd auto. Oh and when I got rid of the car, everything worked (including the 1976 A/C) EXCEPT the chrysler transmission.
My first car was an '84 Grand Wagoneer woody. I calculated its city mpg once. The total: 9.6 mpg! One of the best features of that car was the roll-down tailgate window. On a summer day, nothing beat the crossbreeze between the front windows and that tailgate window. I never once missed the long-dead AC.
Oh, I dunno. My 74 Cherokee with a 401 V8 got twelve mpg, which was sadly better than my buddy's brand new V6 Tacoma PreRunner, which clocked in at eleven mpg.
The successor was just about unstoppable in snow, too, the ZJ. I had a '94 GC Ltd., with the V-8, and save for transmission, T-case, and rear main seal issues, it was a rockin' truck.
I managed 19 MPG, and that's commuting almost a mile in vertical distance over 46 miles of horizontal distance.
The Grand Wagoneer is revered and coveted in snow country for its plow capabilities. They are truly amazing.
I presume you are referring to the eternally-loved XJs? I never owned one, but I have heard nothing but awesome comments from the people that have owned them.
The Grand Cherokees, on the other hand, have gotten mixed reviews.

A nice setup on a 360 or 401 would definitely make these guys run, though. But, yeah, no corners at speed.

Not cheap, but if you're looking for an old school woody with loving professional restoration under the hood, they'll put you in one awesome ride.
