I think he brings up a good point by trying to be clever. If you don't read the press release, you'd think EV must stand for Electric Vehicle. Obviously it is NOT an electric vehicle but a Chevy Volt competing HYBRID! It might be an advanced hybrid but I sure don't know that since there's really no information about the actual technology. Chrysler needs to go now.

@Dan Heathcote: @plyhard13: Um, it IS an electric vehicle. The vehicle is driven solely by electric power provided by the batteries. The batteries can be charged en route by the onboard gasoline engine if necessary, but in no case does the gas engine directly drive the vehicle (a la Prius). That said, would you like to have a strictly plug-in electric vehicle with a very limited range, or a gasoline-electric with a battery pack and the ability to travel 1000 miles or more without stopping to plug it in? Yes, I know you'll have to put gasoline in it, but the technology is what it is. If you want a vehicle that runs on unicorn farts and sunshine, you're gonna have to wait.

I can't wait until Chrysler buys Hummer and makes an electric H3.

Then you'll be able to buy Penis-ENVI.

I'm going to keep repeating my previous statement about four-wheel-drive with a low range, so all this torque will be put to good use.

@FuzzyPlushroom: If you watched the reveal, the talked about that the ENVI team is working on in wheel electric engines to allow the driver to control the power at each wheel. The statement was aimed at the Wrangler EV, but it doesn't mean they won't make 4 wheel electric EVs for all the Jeep line.

@LoganSix: As long as the Wrangler gets 'em, I'll be happy. Probably not a good idea on a larger scale 'cos of the added unsprung weight, but I like the idea.

The best one of these, and the least-hyped is the minivan.

Oh yea Wes.. Chrysler was been building and selling full EV models in 1993.. including a full EV minivan that could do 80 miles on lead-acid batteries..

@WheatKing: Yes, and we can see how well it worked out. Chrysler has serious problems. Have I given up on them completely? No, but, I would say, that if I could put a bet on which D3 would still be in operation by 2013, to build such an Electric Car, it wouldn't be Chrysler.

Really.. this whole down on Chrysler thing is getting kinda lame.

You guys get a voltgasm over GM's vapourware, or minty verbal diarreha over the ugly prius, yet can't find it to write a good word about Chrysler.

    psst.. your bias is showing.

I already made this comment (fucking hamsters) but this could be genuinely cool if we could put all that electric-motor torque to good use... with 4wd and a low range, maybe some skid plates... you know, the parts they already make.

Chrysler doesn't have anything smaller and more aerodynamic in their product range for this technology? Much as I hate to say it, even the PT Snoozer would be a better platform for this.

If it's going to be a front-wheel drive vehicle they might as well just kill the concept in utero. The real segment for this product would be to appeal to all those folks who currently are driving (or looking at) Subaru Forresters who might want something that was a little more eco-conscious. If they could beat Subaru to market with not just a hybrid, but a hybrid with electric-only capability, they could have a real winner on their hands. But it's got to have 4WD, otherwise it's just a funny looking hatchback that, as flyingstitch points out, just further dilutes the brand.

As a side note, I really do hate the looks of the Patriot. It's too squat. Put the same hybrid system in a Liberty and I might actually replace my Cherokee.

Hey, a 16-second quarter blows my Benz out of the water! Then again, most things other than VW vans do, too. Le sigh...

Also: Thank god they chose this and not the Compass or Caliber. At least the Patriot looks decent.

If the model designation doesn't end in J, it's not a fucking Jeep. That means you, Patriot, Compass, Commander, Nitliberto, and new-Grand-Cherokee.

Well, maybe I can make an exception for the minivan-engined Wrangler. I'll have to think about it.
