The
Toyota iQ is the latest tiny car from the number one super best automaker from the land of the rising sun, and it's got a sharp, Japanese-interpreted Smart ForTwo look. Enter Modelista, a tuner who tends to modify cars for show more than go. The company has "upgraded" the iQ with yellow highlights, slightly modified bodywork, and...well, that's about it. Why? Justification of one's own existence, we assume.

Toyota's just dropped what we should expect to see from them at next month's 2008
Paris Motor Show. We're told the super number one best awesome automaker from the land of the rising sun plans to reveal the new third-generation of the Toyota Avensis (the car's platform is the same as that of the Scion tC), the production version of the
iQ concept first shown at the
Frankfurt Motor Show last year and lastly, the AWD
Toyota Urban Cruiser. More details in the press release below the jump.

We're not making a statement on the overall intelligence of the latest Toyota microcar, the
Toyota IQ, but rather a statement on its similarity to a certain other car. In addition to Toyota design and, hopefully, Toyota value, this smallest of cars has a serious advantage over that other intelligent ride: seating capacity. The IQ has a unique 3+1 seating arrangement which makes it suitable for three adults and one child (or two comfortable adults, one contortionist and a magical elf). Price and power are still a mystery, but they're planing production for late 2008 with 100,000 units sold globally. Press release and more pictures below the jump.

Toyota is finally getting smart by getting Smart. The
Toyota iQ Concept from Frankfurt will show up at the Geneva Motor Show as a fully capable production vehicle that will be a "break-through in compact urban transportation." And by a break-through they mean a Japanese version of the Smart (see the name). The last rumor we heard was that the iQ will be powered by
Yamaha motorcycle engine, but powertrain and pricing details are scarce. Photos of the concept and press release below.

Make way for the anonymous sources bearing gifts.
Automotive News reports Toyota will power its IQ microcar with an engine from Yamaha. That from unnamed company executives. Toyota's not volunteering any information on the powertrain selected for a production version of the minicar concept, which showed up in Frankfurt sans engine. The sources say Yamaha Motor, may build the engine for Toyota. Though we'd imagine they could just slap in the 1.2-liter four from the V-Max and start a minicar horsepower war. If only.

According to Japan's
Nikkei, Toyota's planning a new subcompact Smart fighter for Japan based on the
iQ minicar concept it revealed at the Frankfurt show earlier this month. The concept is less than three meters long and seats three adults and a child, but the reported production model will seat four adults and two IKEA lamps (possibly on the roof), one would imagine. It'll be powered by a one-liter gas engine, though a diesel option is on the table. Due date for the new mini, which will be geared toward Europe, but may be sold in Japan, is 2009. [via

Designed in France, the ultra-compact Toyota IQ Concept aims to challenge conventional thinking about what the press release refers to as automotive hierarchies. The vaguely
cephalopod-like maritime shape suggests the car may harbor a
40-shrimp team hybrid synergy powerplant. Actual press release after the jump.
