The Quattro is one of the heroes of a recent BBC period cop show, Ashes to Ashes.

Seems to have sparked something of a resurgence of interest in the vehicle over here (for a fortnight, at least).

This was always one of my all time favorite cars - "how do ve make der Quattro lighter?"

"Let's lop about turty centimeters out uff der middle."

    "Ja!"

Now do it again in pencil-leaded lightness with uberblown turbogoodness - where do I sign up!

A Sport Quattro homologation special (200 built, right?) would have been a better starting point, but those are probably all unobtanium by now, like the Lancia S4 and 037, as well as the Peugeot 205 T16.

Good to see a conventional ur-Quattro converted to awesomeness.

@brandegee: Surprisingly there are examples of each of the cars you listed for sale on English websites. They cost a bit these days, but not out of reach. My dad had one of the Audi's back in the 80's,i was very young so can just remember it & the sound it made.

@layabout .... .- .--. .--. -.-- / -.-. .... .-. .. ... - ...: Yeah, I see these come up from time to time, too. Still, hard to get (the Italian ones are into the 100,000 Euros and up, Audis are cheaper but probably faster), and forget about getting one road-certified in the U.S. Audi only sold 664 ur-Quattros in the U.S., and power was choked down to 160hp. I still see an occasional CoupeGT (FWD), but never a Quattro.

Love these cars, though. Something about a homologation special makes it cool.

The Quattro is awful nice, but when I saw the tail end of that Mercury, I said aloud "Ooh, a Bill Stroppe NASCAR Marauder! I wonder if it's real?" Then I scrolled down far enough to read the text under it. How about a feature on this sometime, Murilee?

@c0de: Close... tenbeers and I were discussing this last night. I think we decided that the last great Audi was the previous RS4, prior to the current gaping-maw grille. Just enough refinement to qualify as a luxury car, but with enough eccentricities to ensure it retains the legacy of Audi lunacy. And for no discernable reason, only available as a station-wagon. And why not?

    And damn pretty too:

@layabout bah humbug: I kind of exclude those because they're as much -- if not more -- Porsche as they are Audi. So it kinda feels like saying that the best Aerosmith song was "Come Together". Even if it's true, it's not their song, so does it really count?

I am happy in my relationship. My girlfriend is 5 years my junior and everything I ever wanted in a woman. But now I've got to wondering, is that enough for me?
