    With the way my friends keep their cars, I'll pass on sharing thanks. I couldn't stand to have to push the multiple fast food bag (some still with food) out of the way on a regular basis.

    I think we can all chip in if we're sharing a French car. We'll never get to drive it, though, since it'll almost never run and there's so many Jalops.

    ...French enthusiasts of cheap Swedish furniture. I know so many of those people. They go on and on about crepes and which types of sofas are the most stylish. Now, they will have a way to share crappy cars, while chatting about flat-packed furniture.

    @blah blah blah:

    Stupid lack of preview.

    It's a great way to justify having only a totally impractical car. If you can deal with biking/taking the bus/taking the train to work to justify your garage kept ludicrous-mobile, ZipCar or the like can hook you up with the grocery runner/minivan/pickup that you might need for an hour at a time.

    @blah blah blah: Don't get me wrong, I would only have one car if we had decent mass transit here and with ZipCar and the like that car, as you pointed out, could be completely impractical.

    Unfortunately, Detroit doesn't believe in mass transit (no, SMART and the MuggerMover don't count) so we have to have two cars. I will add a third car once the house is done.

    Just so long as that scary old black woman with the long gray hair from Ikea's TV ads doesn't materialize next to me in the garage...

    Her spectral appearances in the commercials makes Ikea kitchens and bedrooms scary places to be alone in...

    Does anyone else think IKEA could probably do a decent job with cars?

    Seriously, I'd assemble a car myself, knowing IKEA's ability to design for ease of assembly (hopefully they upgrade the fasteners a little, though).

    It certainly wouldn't last that long, but if it's like a bunch of my other Ikea (too much caps-ing) stuff, I'd just beef it up with a few L brackets and some better screws.

    Besides, it's not like Your Local Ford Dealer has delicious meatballs at reasonable prices to go with your purchase.

    @Mad_Science: The formula works for Caterham, I don't see why it couldn't work for Ikea. All the jokes aside, I think this would work pretty damn well. A cheap, simple car that, say, dad could assemble in a garage in a weekend or so with basic tools? Most of the wiring should be completely possible. I mean, look how, for instance, a Mac is wired. Everything is in a pre-wired component that clips into the next component. There's no reason the dash couldn't come pre-wired, and just clip into the next module.

    I think it's unlikely, however. I think this just means that Ikea has purchased Saab.

    @Mad_Science: Hell, that's the guy who lives in the apartment across the hall from me. He had an old Dodge Ramcharger that couldn't get registered for the road because it had been written off. So he bought, I think, three more, and made one good one from all the different parts, choosing one with a clean title to represent them.

    The impressive part is that he did all this in the middle of winter, on the street in front of our apartment, in about a week, using only a crowbar and a good socket set. The week after, he sanded it down and painted the whole thing a flat primer black.

    All this during spurts of -40C weather.

    So, how do you load your flat-pack in your car to get it home, so you can spread it out all over the driveway and get it assembled before that rainstorm hits and turns everything into a big pile of mushy sawdust?
