I did it alone on a Honda PC800 in the mid-1990's, on a week's worth of screwing around out west. There is freaking nothing out there. Every once in a while, I would just stop, and walk about 2-300 yards off the road. Could have been Mars. Seriously. And at night, the stars aren't in the sky, so much as pressing down on you in swarms, like millions of blue-white bees.

Oh, and never eat the jimson weed. Don't ask.

@bdon: The EGR recirculates a bit of exhaust into the intake air charge to help with emissions.

I don't think I'd want to go any faster than 85 or so, anyway, no matter how straight and barren it is. The half-fishbowls would fall off my headlamp buckets.

Murilee,I don't know how you accomplished this. Each and every time I stare at a 6 hour trip across the New York State Thruway (from Buffalo through Albany) and then onto the Mass Turnpike, I just want to shoot myself. And I do this with an Altima! I set the Cruise to 74, and inevitably, within the first two hours, I have to pull off the highway to keep from falling asleep.

The lure of driving from CT to the South has lost it's allure for me, same with going west. I would just as well get on a plane, rather than drive the distance anymore. It might be the car, but I feel the same way in most rentals, so maybe not.

By the way, the Civic averaged 42 MPG, loaded with 500 pounds of crap and doing 80+ with the AC on most of the way. I knew there was some payoff for the lack of power and comfort!

@diddiyo: 40 is pretty much always "busy" in the daytime (coming from a guy who lives on the Eisenhower most of the time, busy is relative). At night, you still get a fair number of trucks.

I took 50 to St. Louis in my '87 Toyota Tercel 4WD Wagon, and it's brick on the gas pedal and read a book time in one of those. 89mph for hours and hours.

Bay Area-->Flint,MI-->Corpus Christie,TX-->Bay Area(via Vegas/395) 8000mi in 10 days including swinning in the Gulf and touring the bombed out wasteland that is Flint.

I've only ever gotten one ticket in over 4000 mi. of 100+ mph driving and riding in the last 20 years, and that one was too close to Vegas 'Hey, that's a Camaro... with a LIGHTBAR!' -wails on brakes and waits for the turnaround- (officer) 'That's 83 in a 70.' $180 and cursed reciprocity w/CA, so raised insurance for a couple years.

Should have done the overnight stay in Battle Mountain, Murilee. My parents owned and operated the Desert Club and the Calico Club, legal brothels, in Battle Mountain in the eighties and nineties. Now the Desert Club is closed and the Calico is known as Donna's or some such.
