This seems like it is going to be a great engine. Honda's 2.2 from the S2000 might make more power but it doesn't have as much torque, it requires premium fuel, and you have to keep it in the upper revs for it to make that power. Honda's own 2.4 liter four from the Accord is a much more comparable engine. It has 190 hp at 7000 rpm and 162 lb-ft at 4400 rpm. While the hp are fairly close, the Theta has considerably more torque and it makes all of its hp and torque at a lower rpm. I think this will be a very popular engine for Hyundai and one they will want to work on getting into more of their vehicles.

@alowishus wants to run a Saab Sonett III at LeMons: I'm with you, this think sounds like a hell of an engine. What a nice base option mill-and it'll make those little Forte coupes a lot of fun for next to nothing too.

@IH_kumicho: Oh believe me, I'm quite familiar with the complete lack of low-end torque in Honda fours. In fact, it's one of the many reasons I never want to drive a Civic again.
Nevertheless, it's hard for me to feign excitement about a 200 horse anything, let alone a four-banger Hyundai.

@If FromaBuick6: So you're saying that peak horsepower figure of 200 is the only thing that matters in an engine? This engine will make more torque than the H22 could ever dream of, all while getting better fuel economy.
There's as much pornworthy about a naturally aspirated 2-liter-range four-banger as there's about brown paper bags: Sure you can do kinky things with them (although I know of none), but in general they're just plain boring.
Why is it so damn impossible to find a complete set of technical stats on Hyundai engines? I can't find the complete stats for the Tau, Theta, Theta II, or Lambda engines.
All I really want to know, for the sake of comparison to other engines, is the displacement, output, weight, fuel economy, and physical dimensions.
@pauljones: Click on the engine model you are interested in on the left column. It will take you to a more detailed page that includes dry weight and much more.
Yeah, I guess it's Camry-like, but it doesn't have that hideous wort at the top of the grille, nor does it have the same fat, bland midsection of the last two Camrys. Also, the interior looks a lot better, which doesn't say much because the Camry interiors have been pretty mediocre for the last 15 years.
Honestly, I kinda like it. It's a little quirky, but it lacks the blah factor of the Camry and the pure hideousness of the Accord. If I was shopping for a new midsizer, I'd probably look at the Altima and the 6 first, though.

It's hideous. I'm not even sorry to say it, it's just hideous. They seem to have combined the worst styling traits of the last two generations of Camry.
The front end of the Sonata might be somewhat Camry-like but the profile and rear are far beyond what Toyota is doing these days. It looks like Hyundai is learning how to be adventuresome without veering off into awkward or weird territory. That bold crease that sweeps back to the taillights adds some real character.
I see a fair bit of new Taurus in the front, and a lot of 3-series in the back.
Still, this copying this is nothing new. I remember the original Sonata (going back 20 years) described as looking like a bloated Accord. Things got weird in '96, but they normaled it up again for the current generation.

The sixth-gen Camry headlights are unmistakable, as is the VW CC profile.
The aggressive grille may scare a few timid potential buyers away, however, much like the old "Hannibal Lector" Kia Optima grille. Nobody who'd otherwise buy a Camry wants a car that looks like it wants to eat you.

Huh. I must have missed how the H22 put out 186 ft/lbs of torque at 4250rpm....

now that hyundai has raised their quality, does this mean that Toyota has to drop their outrageous price tags?
because right now people see a toyota owner as simply somebody that has too much money and thinks Reliability is part of luxury
