Hell, a friend of mine bought a 2006 Mercedes S550 for $45K.

They really need to buy the rights to, say, the Packard, Oldsmobile or even LeBaron or Imperial names, since nobody I know (including myself) would admit to wanting, much less BUYING a Hyundai that costs as much as a brand-new German or Japanese luxo-sport sedan, and those four names I listed above still mean something to most Americans. Or maybe calling EVERY expensive Hyundai, including this, the Genesis and Coupe (not Scoupe), and maybe the Santa Fe a "Genesis".

I was in Seoul for past two weeks. My biz counterpart picked me up in one of these. I first thought it was a Lexux LS. When my head goes bald, I know I would want to get me a driver and smoke a fat cigar riding in the back of this car. Shit! Where is da sham-pagn!

My response to Hyundai will always be tainted by my experience driving the early 90s $6,000 Excel my sister paid $9,500. It sounded like a sewing machine and was simply terrifying to drive over 55 mph. She sold it 2 years later for $4,000 so only lost $5,000 on the deal... LOL. I know I am wrong but it is a physical response.

To all the naysayers; You actually have to see it in person. I did, at the New York International Auto Show, and it was truly magnificent. I was completely bored with most of the product introductions there, including the Bentleys, but this car really stood out. The interior was something to see, given it's price target.
I'm afraid it will lose the hood ornament when it reaches the US.

I hope this does well. I really, really do. It's distinctive and elegant, with a little bit of Bentley Continental coming through in the character lines. This would never have worked if they hadn't released the Genesis first- somehow the idea of a really nice Korean Buick makes the idea of a Korean Lexus LS more palatable.

I understand the issue with a 50-60k Hyundai as VW had the same problem with their Phaeton (even more $$) but is branding the car as a second-channel marque too 1990's?

Sounds like Hyundai needs a luxury car moniker because i am sure as shit that nobody, and i mean NOBODY is gonna drop $50 to 60 thousand dollars on a Hyundai...

True. Stick the genesis and genesis coupe under that moniker too. They've made leaps and bounds with their low in cars as far as reliability and value...but part of the prestige of owning a 40-60k car is the name it carries.

@B1663R: I disagree that the price point is too high for the Hyundai name, and here's why. German luxury owners scoff at Lexus.
There's a huge contingent of Lexus owners who would respond that the Germans are overcharging when the Lexus is just as good or better.
Hyundai will win its own followers by having models that are almost as good for drastically less money. As crazy as it sounds, there are people shopping in the $50,000+ range who want a bargain.

It's unfortunate that Hyundai didn't put down the big bucks to create a new brand for the Genesis/Coupe/Equus.
It would have been interesting to see what kind of increase to sales could have been gained without having the flying H attached to the car.

@JadeTalon: They shouldn't have to. Shouldn't consumers that plan on shelling out this type of money do the research regardless of what "brand" they're under? I'd buy a Genesis coupe because I've learned that they're much better than their opposition and cheaper too, regardless of the fact it's a Hyundai. I also would not buy a Lexus based on the sheer fact it's the "luxury" division of Toyota. My question is, why is this problem basically unique to Americans? Europe doesn't have this problem. I don't even think luxury brands exist over there.

Is this like the Lincoln commercial where the car drives on ball bearings?
Is the Equus going to come with passe spinners?
