First Hyundai Genesis Coupe Crash Caught In Korea

The last thing any automaker could want leading up to the launch of an exciting new model is images of the car wrecked against a concrete post. Unfortunately for Hyundai, this 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe was caught making its first entry into the destruction derby of automotive life in Korea. According to a translated version of the Korean website Luckyworld, the car was wearing a temporary plate when it smashed into the concrete barrier around a street light, leaving both passenger and driver in critical condition. Since we don't really know the circumstances of the crash, we're not willing to rule out this being not a temp plate, but a manufacturers plate, meaning the car could have been a non-salable tester. Which is why we're willing to overlook for the moment a lack of airbag deployment. More »

RKSport Hyundai Genesis Smacks SEMA With Heavy Hand Of Awesomness

We told you about the speedy Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but what about that other Hyundai Genesis in the unveil video? That was the 460 HP, supercharged, 4.6 liter V8-powered RKSport Hyundai Genesis with experimental cylinder deactivating. The IHI screw-type supercharger provides 11 pounds of additional intake pressure and helps motivate the car to sixty in a scorching 4.9 seconds with a quarter-mile run coming in 13.58 seconds at 108 MPH — all while being capable of returning 27 MPG. Yes, that's from a full-size Hyundai luxury sedan. Holy crap. And we haven't even touched on the upgraded styling. More »

RIDES Magazine's Genesis Is An Apple Fanboy's Dream Car

Even with the Three Dimensions body kit, the exterior of the RIDES Magazine Hyundai Genesis looks fairly stock. But step inside and you'll find they've made it an Apple fanboy's dream sedan. The four-door has three Mac computers (including a MacBook Air and two Mac minis), an iPod touch and an iPhone 3G. Passengers in the rear of this Korean command ship will cruise into the SEMA show in techno-geek style with a center console setup that activates the car's electronics. Not to mention they also have access to all three computers by way of two Apple wireless keyboards perched on flip-down tray tables with an 8.4-inch VGA headrest monitor for both rear-seat passengers to play with. Plus, in the trunk there's a totally-useless-while-driving 20" Apple Cinema Display for web surfing, accessing iTunes and, we'd guess, tailgating. Hit the jump for the full press release from RIDES Mag of one of the cars we're most interested to play with at SEMA (if only so that we can check our e-mail). More »

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Spotted In Metro Detroit Looking Yellow

Jalopnik friend Jon snapped this yellow Hyundai Genesis coupe wearing M plates on I-75 in Metro Detroit yesterday. The angle of the photo shows the dramatic side creases found on the 2-door Korean Mustang-mauler, and from the rear three-quarter the car actually looks more like a Tiburon than its designers would likely care to admit. Kudos for a surprisingly good photo using what we'd assume is a camera phone while driving; we're hoping this wasn't the cause of that accident at Big Beaver yesterday afternoon. More »

First Drive Of Hyundai Genesis Coupe Published By Car Middle East Magazine

We've given you manufacturer-supplied details about the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but now Car Middle East has taken it upon themselves to publish the first drive review of the upcoming Mustang-fighter. Thanks to Car's question-and-answer session with themselves we can tell you that, thanks to the Hyundai-built 3.8-liter V6, and combined with a limited-slip rear, the testers were able to engage in "some top quality rear-wheel slidey fun accompanied by a thoroughly enjoyable sound track from the dual exhausts." The package is good enough to get four stars from the buff book, but is there anything they didn't like? More »

RKSport Hyundai Genesis To Show Off Maximized Performance At SEMA

Hyundai is partnering with RKSport Incorporated to develop a high-performance Genesis sedan for the 2008 SEMA Show. The modifications list reads like the rap sheet on a Fast and Furious movie including TSW wheels, Baer brakes, K&N air filter, Eibach lowering springs and a Magnaflow exhaust system. Perhaps even more to the FNF point are the composite hood, spoiler, front and rear fascias, and side skirts. We're expecting the car to show with a tuned version of Hyundai's 375 HP V8, but we'll just have to wait to find out if it brings any actual upgrades along to Vegas. More »

Hyundai Genesis Drag Races A Porsche Boxster

These may be two completely different vehicles, but that doesn't mean a drag race between a Hyundai Genesis 4.6 and a standard Porsche Boxster is a completely irrelevant test. Yes, the Boxster's flat-six has nothing over the Hyundai's 4.6-liter 375 HP V8, though we can't imagine that will stop impromptu white-collar drag races between Genesis and Boxster drivers on their way from Starbucks to the office. We'd be interested to see how the two compare on a twisty track, though the Genesis Coupe may be more well-suited for that task. [YouTube]

HKS Tunes 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Even though no media outlets have yet driven the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, that hasn’t stopped the company from handing them out to every tuner in the western hemisphere. The latest to get their grubby, carbon-stained hands on the Coupe is HKS, known for sticking big turbos in little cars — which is exactly the approach they took with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. No performance numbers have been revealed yet, but expect HKS to unveil a range of Genesis performance upgrades, along with the boobs of several trashy booth babes at the SEMA show in November. 2009 Hyundai Genesis Earns Five-Star NHTSA Crash Test Scores

The new 2009 Hyundai Genesis has aced NHTSA's crash testing, scoring five stars in both frontal- and side-impact testing. The Korean automaker attributes its high scores to designing for the test the use of high-strength steel at critical points throughout the Genesis' body structure, coupled with electronic active head restraints and eight airbags. Keeping you from smashing the structure in the first place are four-wheel discs with ABS, along with stability control. Kudos, Hyundai: Good news, even if it isn't too surprising: Engineering has progressed so far in recent years that NHTSA is planning to revamp its crash test methodology in the near future. More »

Motive Pits Hyundai Genesis Against Mercedes E-Class, Will Our Expectations Survive?

Like most of us, the guys at Motive are interested in seeing how the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis stacks up against it's German rivals when compared side-by-side. So, they got their hands on a Genesis and brought along a Mercedes E550 to see if Hyundai really has the beginnings of a top-tier luxury brand. 2009 Hyundai Genesis

It was at dinner on the second night of my Korean adventure to drive the 2009 Hyundai Genesis on behalf of Popular Mechanics when I finally decided to try kimchi. If you've never tried the stuff, you'd better have a stomach built like a steel-clad clay pot. I don't. But after spending a few hours running the first luxury sedan from the Korean automaker through its paces at their proving grounds outside of Seoul I figured it was the right time to finally introduce the uniquely Korean delicacy — a pungent, brine-fermented mixture of cabbage, garlic and chili pepper — to my delicate corn-fed Midwestern stomach. The moment the smell hit my nose I had flashbacks to laying on the floor of a wrestling mat in 6th grade with my coach cracking open smelling salts to rouse me. For a brief moment I thought that maybe this was a bad idea. But it was the moment it actually hit my mouth that I knew it was a bad idea. My eyes began to water, my mouth filled with fire and as I forced it down my throat I could already feel it burrowing its way toward my colon like a Northern soldier tunneling to Seoul. Later on that stomach-twisting night — spent alternately clutching the side of the hotel toilet bowl or my bed's sweat-soaked sheets — I had a lot of time to think about the day. Maybe it was some sort of as-yet-unknown hallucinogenic properties of the kimchi, or more likely it was the lack of sleep, but for whatever reason, I started to wonder what this fiery side dish as old as Korea could teach me about the 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan. Genesis Crossover/Wagon Not Expected Anytime Soon, Hyundai Deprives Countless Dozens From Buying Another Boring-UV

After our news earlier on the XL-sized Genesis, here's the second piece of news-like rumor-busting for the day: We've been told by Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at Hyundai, that despite the rumors — and whether it be called a crossover, wagon or whatever-UV — don't expect to see another form factor from Hyundai on the Genesis platform anytime soon. While we mourn the loss of any opportunity for a rear-wheel drive wagon form factor, our dislike of crossovers in general is well documented. So we're both happy and sad. While we go and cry and laugh in a corner, take a moment to reflect yourself. That is all.

Hyundai Shakes Loose Details On Extended-Wheelbase Genesis

As many of you guessed, I'm out here on the Southern tip of the Korean peninsula at the behest of the Mechanics who are quite Popular, getting the scoop on the new Hyundai [REDACTED]. While the driving impressions on the new [REDACTED] from the folks at Hyundai (Yes, Hyundai) are embargoed for a bit, there was other news out here from the little automaker that could in the Republic of Korea that is in no way embargoed. A couple of us auto journalistas had the chance to spend some in-car drive time with Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, President of R&D at the Kimchi Commander of an automaker. First news is that the Genesis and the Genesis Coupe won't be the only BH-platform vehicles produced on the Ulsan assembly lines. In addition to the two RWD-vehicles we've already seen, the boys n' girls at Hyundai are developing an extended-length version of the Genesis sedan — with the product platform designation of "VI" (which does not stand for "Very Immense") for the Korean domestic and Chinese markets. 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Spotted Before New York Auto Show Reveal

We saw the 2009 Hyundai Genesis Coupe in concept form out at the LA Auto Show this past year, and we'll be seeing the new hotness from Hyundai for real in the warm lights of the Javits Center at the New York Auto Show next month. But for the moment, we'll have to make do with the folks at KGP snapping some shots of the new hotness before the official unveil doing some winter weather testing in Sweden. The KGP boys have snapped themselves some shots of not only the exterior of the new little Genesis coupe, but also a small gallery of interior and engine shots — including one very hapless-looking engineer with a face that positively screams "You're not getting my kimchee, mister!" But, the shots do reveal some bad news for fans of manumatics — no paddle shifters on this bad little muscle rocket. Maybe you can hope for a V8? Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals Genesis Sedan, Disrupts Industry

Hyundai execs refer to their new Genesis luxo-sedan as an "industry disruption." It's the same kind of disruption, they say, Lexus achieved back when Japanese luxury cars in America were as much a nonentity as, well, Korean luxury cars in America. Nonetheless, most of you already know the details: Rear-drive, 375bhp, 333 lb-ft Tau "V8," zero-to-60 in under six seconds, five-link front and rear suspension, smart cruise control and more airbags than a press luncheon (bam!). Hyundai's apparently reverse-engineered competitors like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, Lexus GS and Infiniti M. [UPDATE: Lest we forget, the Genesis is also planned in 3.3- and 3.8-liter V6 versions.] More »

More Pics Of The Hyundai Genesis, SUSSUDIO!

We've got more hi-res pics of the Hyundai Genesis than you can shake an 8-inch LCD nav display at.
