The French were the last holdouts in Europe to produce truly unique and wacky cars, going well into this decade with the Avantime. It's too bad those days are gone.
I love how Citroen used to be adventurous with their cars. So much so that when a car failed miserably, there was a knee-jerk, petulant move to sweep it all under the rug:
At least they didn't bank the whole farm on Wankel like NSU or, arguably, AMC.
@DonLuc: I was wondering the same thing, but figured it was an ashtray. The lack of any stains or burns around it leads me to think I'm either wrong, or this example belongs to one of the dozen or less non-smoking Frenchmen. ;')
@ss750ie: @DonLuc:Mime face paint tray? dunno. I was wondering about the oh-shit handle looking thing to the right of the instrument cluster. Also, the shifter boot looks uncircumcised.
Funny thing; On my drive home from work last night I saw a deux cheveux toiling along in the slow lane of the freeway, a line of less interesting cars behind it. For some reason, the sight made getting out of bed that morning well worth it. There's just something about a Citroën.
@Graverobber: I can beat that--didn't get a picture, but I passed a snowy white elegant 1939 (I'm approximating) Caddy. It was only doing about 55 on the interstate, so I passed it before I could get a pic, but even from a great distance I could tell there was something unique and different up ahead...it was like unexpectedly seeing an angel on the road.
The 1956 Rambler was also supposed to have a reverse rear window that could retract. Cost prevented that from reaching production, but the C-pillar still reflects the idea:
Woah, that Consul is sweet.. I love the look of it! My family had top of the line Citroens until the bitter end in the USA.... My mom still has the seats from her last DS in her house!
@acarr260: Pagan Pink Ripple or Mogen David (Mad Dog) 20/20.
As for the GS, imagine the impact it must have had in 1970 when it was dropped onto a landscape full of small cars. Yeah, I know about Citroens and their rust and reliability (lack of), but it's still a shame that it wasn't imported into the US (we wouldn't have been allowed those cool flush headlights, though, and post-'72 safety bumpers would have spoiled the lines).
@tonyola: While I like the idea of crazy Citroens driving around the streets of America, the last part of your thought makes it seem like less of a good idea.
I've never even heard of Pagan Pink Ripple. In fact, I've never tried a pink or ice wine and I've been hearing good things about them lately.
@CaptMatt15 is waiting for his 159 Wagon: That whole interior is actually REALLY nice. Simply update it with knew materials like carbon fiber, aluminum, wood grain and stainless and it would be stunning, really.

The shifter boot doubles as an ashtray so you can row and Gitanes at the same time.

A lot of the old Euro-Fords are astonishingly attractive. Except for the awful Anglia, anyway.

The single spoke steering wheel is VERY cool, its too bad the days of thin and stylish steering wheels are behind us...
