The SCCA and other short-distance racing series should be actively promoting electric autosports just as the drag racers are doing. Short course racing could be safer (no race fuel issues). It would usher in an era of dramatically better traction control technology as racers learn how to harness instant torque off the line and in tight corners. Furthermore, it would give drivers a clear challenge: instead of constantly tweaking the rules to keep innovative engine manufacturers in line, it would be far easier to issue every team the same amount of energy for the race: identical battery packs. How they recharge and drive is up to them. That would make for some seriously fun formula racing.

@my favorite car is a motorcycle: This is a great idea. Historically this is how all manner of automotive advancements came about, put them to the test on a race track.

I'd rather not see identical battery packs though, let teams develop their own methods for storing the energy. Give them a maximum weight so they don't just load it up with extra batteries. Then start stretching the length of races to force the development curve.

Regardless of how it's implemented I think all electric racing series could greatly benefit the rate of advancement of electric car technology.

@Number_Six: YankBoffin is way ahead of you with a prototype that runs on high-test Nirvana, Radiohead, Flaming Lips, or even Wilco in a pinch.

I wonder if Porsche will collaborate with RUF and "borrow" ideas from the Greenster. [www.autoblog.com]

Q: Why did Porsche/Audi/VW start making electric vehicles?

A: So they could charge more.

Hmmm... I wonder - if the electric motor is in the rear and air-cooled, will that please the purists?
