i haven't seen this in the detroit area (yet), but there is a person who frequently parks his minivan on woodward with "DR. XXXXXX KILLED MY MOTHER" in large yellow letters. yeah, sitting on the side of woodward is going to rectify that situation.

Talk about auto build issues.. my VW Passat 07 has horrible smell each time I turn the a/c on.

Starting from 14,500 miles, the smell was horrible and embarrassing especially when u have other pple riding with u in the car.

I've taken it to various dealerships, they've done same technical bulletin 3-4 times and the damn a/c still smells. I've had the cabin filter replaced 2-3 times (currently at 28K+) and recently did the cabin filter replacement (with the dealer version) and still the damn moldy eggy smell is still there.

What can I do? shove all sorts of writings on the windows and park it across the dealership?

I've always had a secret, unspoken [until now] thing for the 1st Gen Freelander. Every time I see one on the road, I've got to give it a extra-long look. But their horrible build quality will keep one outta my garage until:

    1) I have millions of dollars to spend on repairs and another 20-30 cars to drive, or

    2) I make it to my nineties, when even the most reliable cars from the 1990s will be antique money pits.

I seem to recall an irate Ford owner years ago who left the heavily signed vehicle at Ford's World HQ. This was well before Lemon Laws and may have been a precipitating cause for those laws.

I also saw a car with a very seriously crushed left side, and painted above the wound "S.F. is NOT a good neighbor."

Should have gone with an old Series III. Sure they break down a lot but a couple of wrenches and a screwdriver will fix 99% of the things that go wrong.

I am still amazed at the number of LR owners in my town. Obviously a status thing, meaning, that they have the coin to fund extensive, pricey repairs! Some friends of mine had one of these and it was, in short, a huge nightmare. Now they have VW's and love em.

A friend's coworker used a similar technique when he started having problems with his newly-built home in a newly-developed subdivision. When the contractor refused to honour the new-home warranty program he had been promised, and refused to fix the issues they found with their new home, he took matters into his own hands.

He went out and spent a few hundred dollars on very large billboards, then mounted them high in his back yard, facing towards the huge patio windows and doors on the show home the contractor was using to woo potential clients.

The signs read, "Before you buy, come ask me how happy I am with my new home, the contractor, and my warranty!".

They must have worked, because shortly thereafter, devlopment on the subdivision stopped altogether, and no new houses went up. And rather than try and make him happy, the contractor took him to court, suing him for the millions of dollars they estimated they lost.

We had a guy in Connecticut with a GMC Savanna that he had wrapped with all of the problems it had.

I know my parents have had a few cars that were bought back under the Lemon Law, and it is a real hassle.

I wonder if this particular dealer lived by the old adage "the customer is always right".

I had a friend who bought a Ford 500 and had to take back for repairs to dealer over sixty times. Some of the concerns were minor, and others were downright dangerous. Car companies need to voluntarily implement a policy whereby after a certain number of returns to the dealer, the car is replaced.

    @Flathead Smith:

I recall the same problem with Mazda RX8s. I had one, and was a member of the owner forums. Some owners were on their 4-5th factory replaced engines. Some were told to bring back their cars for a refund, I believe. (a buyout).

@Saboth: yeah, but that was all blown out of proportion because the replacement engines Mazda was originally using SUCKED, so they would blow up and need to be replaced again, and again, and again... and again...

Mazda has tightened the QC on the replacement engines now to the point that they have upped warranties to 8 years and 100k miles, I believe. If you still have your RX-8, I wouldn't be too concerned about reliability any more if I were you.
