I saw carbon fiber wheels on rockcrawlers several years ago, however they were not street legal. The problem with carbon fiber versus metal is that carbon fails catastrophically, where metal fails gracefully. Also carbon fiber composites are very susceptible to failure from small nicks and scratches. Most high end bike shops will have a collection of snapped off carbon fiber handlebars and seatposts that failed due to improper clamping or getting gouged by a rock.

Interesting, Obviously trying to make the wheel as light as possible.

I would like to know why a carbon fiber rim on a magnesium hub is superior in this regard to that of a an all carbon fiber wheel.

@rocor: Heat usually breaks down the eopxy used in construction; being bolted to a glowy red disc may pose some durability problems...

I had the chance to speak with one of Michelin's engineers at a congress some time ago, and that was their problem. The thing is horribly noisy, and it simply won't do. They were working on a way to make it quieter.

@Grive: Erm, the issues with the rubbery thingie involved possible heat failure, since it got really hot, as it was constantly stretching and bending quite violently.

Those rims won't do. They won't do at all. I mean, they already look like they have plenty of tire on them. The carbon rim will visually double the sidewall of your new 15-series tires.

@elwood: they are well aware and we (Dad's shop) have been featured twice. That's how I got the Star. It's kind alike an honorary degree. You never actually went to shool for the subject but you've been working your craft for so damn long that you might as well have a degree. In Dad's case it's having a longtime affliction with Citroens. :)

Citroen/Michelin made carbon wheels for some SMs back in the day. Once again the world is catching up to something Citroen did years before, only now at a time when people want this sort of cool technology.

Kinda neat, but what we really need are flexible wheels that warp to maximize the contact patch on the pavement in corners. We have the technology.

Actually, I don't know if we have the technology. I just wanted to say that.

@Bumblebee: That much deformation in the tire would increase wear and heat significantly... Dunno, might be possible but I don't know that it would be practical once you actually balanced all the forces that would be at work...

I've seen carbon fiber wheelsets on triathlon bikes, and I have to say, they hold up pretty well and they're insanely light.

I saw one set of taco'ed carbon fiber wheels at an Ironman race in Florida. One of the pro riders slid out coming into a turn and took out another rider. The guy that slid out was only scratched up and his bike was fine, but the guy he took out ended up hitting a curb and wrecking his trick carbon fiber wheels. Amazingly the rider who ran into him took the wheels off of his bike and gave them to the guy who he took out of contention. I thought that was a pretty sportsman like thing to do.

Anyway, onto the wheels in the story. It looks like a pretty good use of the material since the outer edge of the wheel is magnesium, while the carbon fiber creates the mid section where the chances of an impact are pretty small. Neat.

Best explanation I ever heard regarding the difference in handling/control was that it was like the difference between fishing with cheap mono-filament vs. fishing with that new fangled spider-wire-braid; whatever that means...

MUCH better. Large CF panels can even warp from engine heat or friction with air. Honestly, I wouldn't have the balls to hoon a car with a set of CF rims. Composite material failures are usually catastrophic -- as in instantaneous disintegration.

Same for carbon fiber bike frames, but at least then you get the reward of falling on the shards!
