UK or European gasoline prices have nothing to do with prices of fuel in the US as most of their fuel prices are related to how heavily they are taxed. Often times they pay less per gallon than we do in the US, but obviously a lot more after taxes are added.

Stop with the comparisons the US isn't that socialized... yet.

@Mad_Science: I know that, I was just carefully choosing a county-by-county map. There's plenty of squishy ones that figure it out by population. As elwood said, urban areas and Yankees go left, rural areas and good ol' boys go right.

Orange County is an exception, but we really ought to airlift all the cool street-parked cars and carpet-bomb everything behind the Curtain anyway.

@pauljones: As a Georgia resident all I have to say is prices would be even less if anyone had noticed the legislature changing the gas tax for 5 cents to 5% a few years ago. But gas was so cheap nobody noticed.

Oh and I did pay 2.79 for premium the other day

@pauljones: If you want to live somewhere horrible yet cheap, c'mon down to the Texas gulf coast and pick yourself up a pretty nice house from between 100k and 200k. The only real downside is the weather, the people, the bugs and the hurricanes, but we have a beach and as much smoked brisket as anyone could ever ask for.

@pauljones: If you gotta be out on the coasts, then sure, the Carolinas would be good. But if you venture too far inland, you're seriously getting into Deliverance country.

Frankly, I like the midwest. And at least in Iowa, the mid-grade 89 octane is the cheapest, which could be a benefit to those with some higher performance project car hells.

@pauljones: No, you're right, there isn't much for basement dwelling trolls to do here. I mean what use would use would you have for clean air and the great outdoors? Why would anybody want to live in the heart of a great city and with all of the modern conveniences, 10 minutes from work, and be able to hop in my car and drive 20 minutes and be out of the city, in the beautiful country. Traffic? What traffic? At the worst, add 10-15 minutes to any given commute.

Smog? Nope. Beer? Fantastic.. Driving roads? You haven't lived. Women? Ok, a little hairy, but hairy chicks need lovin' too - just not always by the opposite sex. Smug? You betcha -we're smug AND condescending, but we had the sense to flee the high prices and over-crowding of California and dammit, we got here first!

@dragondrop: Yeah, my grandfather and all of his buddies all live in Oregon.

That's really about summarizes the target demographic of Oregon's appeal.

And unlike many parts of SoCal, they do have basements, and they do spend a lot of time down there. There is no traffic because so few people live there, and most of those that do are too old to drive safely. You can get good beer anywhere these days. Driving roads? Let's just say there's a reason why so many car magazines wind up doing road tests in California. Girls? I'm not a big fan of grizzly bears, myself.

Smug? Damn straight. We have a crap load of hot girls, great weather, and more variety in terms of natural scenery than anywhere else in the country.

@pauljones: On top of that, one has to wonder whether they're "Enron"-ing the cost of gas since CA makes the refineries create a California-specific blend. I liked Obama's idea of one blend for the whole country, following CA's lead. In the long run, it'll be better for everyone, and the oil companies will have less of an excuse to hike up the prices regionally.

I hear my neighbors piss and moan about gas prices being so bad all the time, and I keep telling them they're lucky they don't live in the UK.

Now I can start telling them they're lucky they don't live in Kalifornia. Tennessee prices are pretty darned good as I've always said, and now the map shows.
