    And yeah, this thread has been a rather depressing read. "Scooter = gay" doesn't really cut it.


    Although... I mean, I ride a scooter for daily transportation, but I'd never get a Metropolitan. The shape, the paint scheme, the missing 75ccs, are all a bit, how should I say - ghey?

    What I want to know is where Mr. Wert is to address this whole Smart-Car-having-a-sexual-preference... thing. My Jalop Brother Charles Barrett is a Gay man, and I think we need to have a little more respect for one another here, especially one of the very best commenters on this website. I thought it was the Jalop way.

    Thank you for defending my honor, POLAЯ. I was feeling a bit intimidated, but all seemed to be couched in good humor.


    The Metro has the advantage of allowing the driver to boast of having 50cc between his legs; most Americans may assume that's a big number.


    The Key West references are too funny; anyone going to a guest house there (straight or gay) knows to ask about parking accomodations beforehand.


    Key West is more ticket-happy than West Hollywood or Beverly Hills (when stationary, not rolling).

    As a former purveyor of all things Smart here in Canada, I can say that not as many of there owners are gay as you'd think. But they do all share one trait: merciless smuggitude. They all think they're absolutely the smartest people in the world for driving those anchor-towing, foot dragging, libido destroying tin cans.

    At one point, I had both a V8/four speed Mercury Comet with glasspacks, and a Lambretta scooter. One got me chicks, and one got me dudes. Guess which one was which. I'll give you a hint: "Dang, you got a big block in that thing?!! Whooooo!!!!" Versus: "Wow, that's really cool, can I sit on it?"

    I drive a Smart Car everyday and feel safer in it than I would in an Aveo. I don't think I could say the same if I rode the scooter everyday!

    Hmmm... then again maybe an Aveo isn't a very sensible comparison.

    If you travel to Miami, you'll see lots of scooters in the city. Congested traffic, limited parking, and good weather make them practical.
    Especially in the arts and design district.
    Many of the riders are women, but there are mod scooters ridden by young punks, too.
    Maybe in the northeast, scooters make less sense.

    @biminitwst: In NYC, scooter wins every time. Except crosstown, when bicycle is by far fastest.
