Honda Civic Hybrid Goes Rally Racing
Who said hybrids have to be boring? Lotus has teamed up with Oaktec to tune and develop a version of the Honda Civic Hybrid for rally duty. The upgrades range from a much more aggressive power delivery and regenerative braking strategy to beefed-up suspension components. Specs on the car are still being kept quiet, but it's a darn impressive engineering effort to race a hybrid and our pocket protectors are spinning just thinking about the complexity. More » -

Honda Thinks Plug-In Technology Not Yet Up To Task
Apparently, even in light of Chrysler's announcement this morning, Honda thinks all this plug-in hybrid stuff is nonsense...at least until battery technology is up to the task, reports Bloomberg News. Masaaki Kato, head of Honda's research unit, said "For battery-powered vehicles to become more widespread, more popular in the market, we feel battery technology needs to advance further." Kato considers the rapid release of a plug-in hybrid when technology isn't quite up to the task could be a PR disaster, and he hints at such, remarking that the expectations for plug-ins are big and "we don't know that that could be sustained right now." Instead, Honda will continue work on its hydrogen fuel-cell FCX Clarity, which the company considers less technologically challenging than developing advanced batteries. More » -

2010 Toyota Prius Spotted, Ironically, At Gas Station
A next-generation 2010 Toyota Prius was snapped in full camo regalia filling up at a gas station. So what can we tell? Mainly that the Prius' has totally ripped off the styling of the new Honda Hybrid, differentiating their design with the addition of a small spoiler on the rear. Reports state, and these pictures seem to confirm, that the main visual changes to the 2010 Prius will be on the interior, with a much more integrated cockpit design taking the place of the tacked-on bins-'n-pods look of the current car. You can get your helping of hybrid smug — made-in-America by 2011, no less — midway through 2009, the tentative date for the Toyota vs. Honda hybrid battle royale! [Drive.com.au] -

2009 Honda Civic and 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid Officially Revealed
After those excitingly rendered 2009 Honda Civic scans surfaced yesterday, Honda apparently decided throw some water on the party and debut the real deal today with official press images and information. The 2009 Honda Civic and Civic Hybrid have indeed been updated, but are considerably less exciting than we were hoping for. It took us a bit to figure out what changed between '08 and '09, but from the appearance side of things, the most dramatic difference is the lower bumper — it gets a set of flanking intakes which are probably just for visual interest. Most of the news comes from interior features, including the introduction of a stereo system equipped to play MP3s, some Bluetooth gadgetry and a new stability-control system. Check out the pics and read all about it in the press release below. More » -

2010 Honda Hybrid Up Close, Wearing Ford's "Dave" Smile
Honda seems to be lifting design cues directly from Ford on its new Honda hybrid — you know, the one definitely not named Insight. We thought that grille looked familiar when we first saw it a few weeks ago, but this up close and personal image confirms it — Honda, meet Dave... Dave, Honda. Hope you two can get along after the cease-and-desists start rolling in. More » -

Honda Hybrid To Purportedly Deliver 60 MPG, Not Be Named "Insight"
Honda's apparently aiming for a fuel economy of 60 MPG or higher with the new Honda hybrid expected to show its face at the Paris Motor Show. We're also hearing "Insight" has been tossed out the window as an option for the name. More » -

Five Years Have Passed Since A New Hybrid-Only Vehicle Came To Market
With all the talk about alternative powertrains and who has the most hybrids, one statistic stands out: It's been more than five years since the second-generation Toyota Prius hit showrooms, marking the most recent new vehicle to have been designed only as a hybrid. And, as hybridcars.com reports, that's a huge challenge for Honda as it prepares to introduce its new Honda hybrid Prius-fighter. Not only does the new car need impeccable aerodynamics and the ability to seat five, but it also needs to be easily distinguished as a hybrid, yet instantly identifiable as a Honda and not a Prius. Honda Hybrid To Start at $18,500, Wipe Smug Smile Off Prius' Face
Honda has been diligently working on its Toyota Prius-fighter, a dedicated Honda hybrid expected to go on sale early in 2009. But they recently pulled out the trump card in this battle royal — a starting price of just $18,500. The five-door, five-passenger hybrid-only car will get to that low, low price point by using a greatly simplified — and 50% cheaper — version of its Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. Seems the mileage wars are really starting to heat up. More » -

Honda's New Hybrid Prius-Fighter Caught Desert Testing, Listening To "Eye Of The Tiger"
No, it only looks like the Toyota Prius. The crafty car spies of KGP caught up again with the Honda engineering team in the hot desert sands out west. Just in the nick of time to take an exclusive first set of shots of Honda's new Prius-fighting hybrid. We don't know much about it other than we knew the boys from Honda had something in development to sit on top of Honda's hybrid hierarchy — in the slot just above the 2009 Honda Civic hybrid sedan we saw earlier today. We also know it'll be a global model. Otherwise, you're on your own. Hit the jump for the spy report. More » -

Hybrid Honda CR-Z Gets Green Light
After yesterday's announcement of the Hybrid Honda Fit and continuation of the Civic Hybrid, Honda has announced it will be building a hybrid version of the radical CRX inspired Honda CR-Z Concept. The hybrid will be slotted under the FCX-inspired five door and deliver sports car fun with a hybrid badge. We don't really care about the marketing, but we're just excited by the idea of compact, tossable high fuel mileage hot hatch. [Carscoop]
