So, basically, GM's selling Fisker a factory to develop a Volt-killer.

So basically the U.S. government is paying Fisker to buy a shuttered plant from GM — one that once built the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky — so they can use it to develop a Chevy Volt-killing affordable plug-in mid-size sedan. Does this mean the Feds don't believe GM can get the job done to bring the Volt to market or do they just don't want to be seen as picking winners or losers in the 'lectric car debate? Or, more likely, they just want the greenies to get the warm n' fuzzy feelings for the Obama administration for doing something to make plug-in hybrid cars. Either way — it's one more assembly plant that's getting un-shuttered and maybe Henrik Fisker's got a better gameplan in place than Tesla.

FISKER AUTOMOTIVE TO BUY U.S. ASSEMBLY PLANT TO BUILD AFFORDABLE PLUG-IN HYBRID CARS

WILMINGTON, DE — Oct. 27, 2009 – Fisker Automotive has selected the Wilmington Assembly plant in Wilmington Delaware to build affordable plug-in hybrid cars.

Fisker executives made the announcement inside the dormant facility today, joined by Vice President Joe Biden, Delaware Governor Jack Markell and other state officials.

The plant will support Fisker Automotive's Project NINA, the development and build of an affordable, family-oriented plug-in hybrid sedan costing about $39,900 after federal tax credits.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2012. Fisker Automotive anticipates Project NINA will ultimately create or support 2,000 factory jobs and more than 3,000 vendor and supplier jobs by 2014, as production ramps up to full capacity of 75,000-100,000 vehicles per year. More than half will be exported, the largest percentage of any domestic manufacturer.

The modernized Wilmington Assembly plant was selected for its size, production capacity, world-class paint facilities, access to shipping ports, rail lines and available skilled workforce.

"This is a major step toward establishing America as a leader of advanced vehicle technology," said Henrik Fisker, CEO. "Wilmington is perfect for high quality, low volume production and will soon be the proud builder of world-class, fuel-efficient Fisker plug-in hybrids."

Fisker Automotive has signed a letter of intent with Motors Liquidation Co. (MLC), formerly known as General Motors Corp. to purchase the Wilmington plant for $18 million after a routine four-month evaluation period.

An additional $175 million will be spent to refurbish and retool the factory over the next three years.

Funds will come from a conditional loan of $528.7M the Department of Energy awarded the company in September.

The loan is part of the $25B Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing loan program (ATVM) appropriated by Congress in 2007 to help the United States lead in the development and manufacturing of advanced technology vehicles.

The company's first car, the Fisker Karma, will be the world's first production plug-in hybrid when it goes on sale this summer at retailers in the U.S. and Europe.

Fisker plug-in hybrid cars will help remove the country's dependence on foreign energy by eliminating the need for 42 million barrels of oil by 2016. They will also offset 8 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

"With our close-knit business, government, and educational communities and our potential to respond rapidly to new opportunities, today's announcement is a testament to what works best in Delaware. Fisker is a perfect partner in shaping Delaware's economic future, and we are thrilled that the vehicle that can reshape the automobile industry will be built here in Delaware, by Delaware workers." said Governor Jack Markell (D-Delaware).

Gary Casteel, UAW director responsible for the plant, said, "It gives me great pride to give UAW Local 435 workers the opportunity to partner with Fisker Automotive to create a greener America by building a plug-in hybrid car that will compete globally."

<![CDATA[Fisker Sunset Concept Heading To Detroit]]> Fisker will be unveiling a new concept at the Detroit Auto Show, the romantically named Sunset. What is it?

Other than the cheeseball name and its resemblance to the hybrid Fisker Karma, as evidenced by this picture, details are scarce. Henrik Fisker, who struck out on his own after designing the BMW Z8 and the current Aston Martin range will unveil the Fisker Sunset on January 12. The lack of a B-pillar on the driver's side of this tease, combined with the name, hint at a convertible. This would give the company the chance to claim the first production drop-top hybrid, but there's no way to be sure this is what the Sunset is. Whatever it is, we expect music by Enya, a rose-tinted dry ice and laser show and maybe even some interpretive dance designed to convey just how emotional the Sunset is about shrinking polar ice caps. <![CDATA[Fisker Seeks Arbitration With Tesla In Ongoing Eco Slap Fight]]> It looks like Henrik Fisker and company are asking to have the Tesla suit arbitrated in Orange County. As you're all well aware, neither Fisker nor Tesla are actually making cars but are instead just suing the crap out of each other over various charges (here's an explanation of the Tesla and Fisker suit). Long story short, Tesla claims Fisker stole info when designing a sedan for Tesla. Oh, by the way, here's Fisker's Karma Hybrid sedan. Who is right and who is wrong? Who cares at this point?

According to Fisker, a condition of his work with Tesla involved an arbitration clause in the case of a suit filed by the company. Wasn't that prescient? Both car companies continue to to propel themselves towards limited production, so we have a fun race between significant deliveries and the settlement of ongoing litigation. It's like Le Mans except much, much longer.

<![CDATA[Artega GT Nearing Production, Hundreds Cheer]]> It's been nearly a year since a promising little coupe rolled into the Geneva show floodlights. Back then, the Henrik Fisker-designed Artega GT was just a rolling chassis with Porsche cues atop, accompanied by promises of 300-horsepower VW engines, light weight and a fair asking price. We saw it again in Frankfurt, where its builders said it was on track for a 2008 release. Of course, by production we mean only 500 will be built per year at around a $100,000 a pop (€75,000). For that you get an aluminum space-frame chassis and carbon-fiber reinforced body, which, plus its 3.6-liter V6 (with six-speed DSG automanual), adds up to only 2,425 pounds. Colin Chapman, call the front desk.

<![CDATA[Teaser of Fisker Coachbuild Hybrid Breaks Cover]]> Yesterday, we saw designer-coachbuilder Henrik Fisker striding through the SEMA crowds. Dressed in ultra-European finery, the portly, blond Dane looked like Lord Mountbatten at a Good Charlotte concert. Now, the company that bears his name has released an image of the car that may redefine what we think about hybrids. It's a joint project of Fisker Coachbuild and Quantum Fuel Systems, a luxe gas-electric hybrid Fisker says will debut at the coming Detroit Auto show in January. The price will be under $100,000, and it'll be the height of a 911 with the interior space of a Mercedes S-Class. And potentially, according to this official rendering, the face of a Fisker. <![CDATA[Artega GT Coming in 2008]]> It looks like a lost cousin of the Porsche Cayman, though it's powered by a Volkswagen V6. It's the Artega GT, a star of the Geneva auto show this past March. Word is it's due for market release. The Artega was designed by Henrik Fisker, who penned the Aston Martin DB9 and in 2005 formed a company that rebodies BMW 6-Series and Mercedes SL models as super-high-end luxury cars under the Fisker marque. Now, German magazine Automobilwoche reports sales of the Artega GT, by German auto supplier Paragon, will commence in summer of 2008. Weighing under 2500 pounds and powered by VW's 3.6-liter FSI V6, the cars will get from zero to 60 in around five seconds. The first production run will of 500 units, each selling for 75,000 Euro, or around $103,000. [Automobilwoche via World Car Fans]
