Forgot to mention: the trunk turned out to be full of small household appliances. Vacuum cleaner, blender, couple of phones. Bonus!

That last large picture is amazing. The little Volvo looks like a modest Lotto winner--disbelief, joy, hope--impossible not to love this car.

@☠Grяrяrяrяrяrяrя now gets up to 29 MPG highway (kindasortam...: You know, Hellhammer did mention that a mid-engine V8 Transporter could be built on a LeMons budget while we were there, he's got at least a dozen possibly good V8s in his collection, and I betcha the seller would let this one go cheap... but the problem would be finding fools to drive it.

My '89 244 sat for almost two years and started right up with a new battery. First try. Brakes work, lights work, everything works except the long-deceased handbrake.

    Is it inspectable? Hahahahahaha. Almost.

For obvious reasons, I love this project. There was one of these behind an apartment house 'round here... I wonder what happened to it?

@Slantsick, now with 30% less wit: It only rains for a few months per year here, and the SC mountains get good and hot in the summer, drying out what moisture does get in the car. The home-for-critters factor is really what's ruined the interior- looks like raccoons and/or possums found it quite comfortable.

Maybe they should stuff a suspension in one, so it doesn't get passed by a Fiat with an engine 1/4 the size. ;)

Not to nitpick, but that's a B20. B21 was in 76 forward. The exhaust/intake manifold on the same side is a dead giveaway.

Is it a manual tranny? Think Hellhammer would sell me the bellhousing?

@Belligerence Now!: OK, B20. It is a manual trans, but we might need it if we lose our grip on reality enough to build the Volvo-engined Spitfire. Did I mention that I've been offered a free engineless Spitfire?

@Murilee Martin: There's a cheap Spitfire ($300) for sale around these parts and guy claimed it was "90%" done". When prodded further, it basically came to that he had "90% of the parts" that it needed "200% assembly" to get a functioning Spitfire.

That being said, I maintain that it's not as coastal as Maine. And California doesn't salt the roads half as much, 'cause most of California isn't big on snow.

Oh man. The Santa Cruz mountains...my high school stomping grounds.

We used to go party at this one unclaimed chunk of land called the "Clown Spot".

It was so named because the first kids that ventured up the dirt road entry found nothing but a clown mask and a bra in the abandoned utility shed on the property. The logical conclusion was that some kind of clown-fetish rapist took his victims there.

The second logical conclusion was that it'd be a great place to go drink on Friday and Saturday nights once all the parties got shut down down in town.

This would be the place I took 16 people offroading in the family Suburban. This would be the place I managed to hydrolock the engine in my first Jeep, leading to my first summer job as a tire monkey at Goodyear, to which I owe much of my automotive knowledge and experience.

So yeah, fun times to be had up off Summit and Bear Creek Roads.

Another bit of minutia is that that night was when gas jumped from like $1.20/gal to 1.60 or 1.70 for some reason. I remember not being able to much gas for the $10 I had on me.

Of course, I paid 1.65 for gas a little while ago...so I was feeling pretty nostalgic. Definitely miss The Truck, 40 gallon tank and all.
