I'm actually looking forward to this. I have the full Alpine system in my car, and I adore everything about it. Flip out 7" LCD, with touchscreen and pulse-control feedback so it feels like real buttons. DVD, CD, Sirius, iPod integration, Bluetooth handsfree, and Nav system -- although I replaced that with a separate nav system that was easier to read.
My only complaint about the G8 was the total absence of gadgetry. It's a beautiful huge LCD display that plays, uh, the radio? A CD? I hear they have XM now, finally... they didn't at first. Still no SatNav, though. Maybe this is an indicator of the direction GM is moving, and letting Alpine take over its in-car entertainment system. That would be fantastic.
@bigblockautoX: just think....as if the accident rate in our nation isn't high enough... Officer: Sir, how did you not see the boy on the bicycle Elderly Man: Officer! I was looking at the left side of my windshield, my grandson put on the damned rap music again and I couldn't figure out how to put john mellencamp back on!
Does the LaCrosse really need an infotainment package? The average Buick buyer is used to the Delco "crapotainment" package with two knobs and Dolby B noise reduction. Anything more advanced will be confusing as hell for the "get off my lawn!" crowd.
If FromaBuick6 has to watch one more Chevy commercial, he's going to punch Howie Long in the face was starred

Also of note, is the claim that Alpine will provide a portfolio of environmentally-friendly products to support automakers as they focus their resources on creating energy efficient vehicles.
Alpine a few years ago came out with the iDA series that was supposed to replace 6-disc CD changers, hard drives, etc. with a fairly simple head unit that would have a full speed connection to an iPod. Their market research showed that most people were storing their music on iPods and other MP3 players and the weight of the CD changer, etc. could be eliminated. Weight requires energy.
It seems the carmakers, in their infinite wisdom, did not agree.
Seriously, who sits there and downloads their music collection onto a hard drive in a car?
HD-level graphics for the navigation maps and the back-up camera
You can see the kid's tears as you run him over?
Flash is the future. Everything just needs a couple of SD/CF slots and a token amount of internal memory...save the internal space for other stuff. You don't need hard drives in there.
