I saw a Canopy Express in Vintage Truck magazine a couple of months ago and the body was awesome, but the chassis was Suburban :P
Looking at this beast, you can't tell me American cars weren't built to last. This is what you get when you take care of 'em, folks...fifteen seconds of fame on Jalopnik.
With the vintage Wyoming license plate on the front, one can almost picture the Joad family considering this vehicle a HUGE step up from their own decrepit jalopy... (I know, the Joads are from Oklahoma, but that's close enough for literary license...)
@Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: Would also be anachronistic. My impression was always that the Joads were dealing with the very lowest of low in used vehicles. Timewise, that would probably be anything made between 1915-1925, so as to give it time to be sufficiently beaten circa 1932.
Unfortunately, Pimp My Lizzie was still in its infancy at that time, and did not come across well in radio form. Otherwise, yeah, the Joads would have dug it.
@Impalamino: It's been a while since I've read the novel, but the part of my brain not occupied with remembering 20-year-old pop songs and whatnot says the Joadster was a Hudson Super-Six.
This truck is super-cool as is- also one of the few that could sport a SBC without my reaction being "WTF?!" My choice would be a 250 I6 with a four-barrel, or maybe a 283.
@Slant- sick of the Camaro: You are correct, my friend, both in remembering that the Joad family drove a Hudson Super-Six and in thinking a hot 250 I6 would be great for this truck. Of course, a hot GMC 302 I6 would be even cooler, but they're getting hard to find.

I've never seen a Croat or a Kosovar Albanian step within 100 yards of Fenton's.

I might put a Jag V-12 in there, but a Caddy V-16 would probably fit just as well and be a little more appropriate.
