Country: Netherlands
Where: Bollenstreek Route
Why: The Bollenstreek Route, a.k.a. The Flower Route, gets its name from the miles of road cutting a path through acres and acres of tulip fields. Explosions of color fill the eye, making this a perfect spring journey.

Country: Canada
Where: Manitoba Prairies
Why: Not for the agoraphobic, this seemingly endless expanse of farmland and prairie opens the mind and evokes the spirit of life before the Internet.

Country: United States
Where: Hana Highway, Hawaii
Why: Gorgeous black-sand beaches, tropical greenery, and water everywhere — this is why people cross thousands of miles of empty Pacific to visit a spec of volcanic rock. Nearly 600 curves and 59 bridges don't hurt either.

Country: France
Where: Provence
Why: Ever dream of crossing a quiet countryside in a Citroen SM, then pulling into a little bistro for a glass of the local vintner's craft in the company of a stunning brunette mademoiselle? You were picturing Provence.

Country: Jamaica
Where: The Pirate Route (Port Royal to Kingston)
Why: The island nation is small enough to cross in a day, and in crossing it you'll see beautiful coastline, small hillside villages, and the City of Kingston.

Country: New Zealand
Where: Lord of the Rings Route, North Island
Why: Whether you're a fan of the movie trilogy or not, New Zealand feels like Middle Earth. And to quote Flight Of The Conchords: "New Zealand: Rocks!!!"

Country: Canada
Where: Montreal, Area Loop Drive
Why: They can't all be coastlines, can they? From the urban heart of Montreal outwards toward wine country, this is a varied drive so wonderful Alfa Romeo named a car after it.

<![CDATA[1967 Datsun 411 Down On The Maui Street]]> This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition, where we check out interesting street-parked cars in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot. You'd think Maui's humidity would be rough on old Japanese cars…

But this little Bluebird looks to have dodged the Rust Monster's fangs for decade after decade. Reader Chris was in Makawao and found what must be one of the nicest street-driven PL411s in the world. Here's what he has to say about it:

Hi,I was in Hawaii a few weeks ago and spotted this car on the island in Makawao,Maui.
I did a search on Jalopnik and it appears to be a Datsun 411 Bluebird. Very nice shape,
and for sale also. I've included a few pics, enjoy!

<![CDATA[At Last! Hawaii Five-O Complete First Season on DVD]]> Fans of black Ford sedans, unisex hair styles, scenic Pacific vistas, and cheesy dialog, will be ecstatic to hear that the entire 1968 first season of television's finest Hawaiian cop drama is at long last available on DVD. While this news was first reported months ago, getting the discs onto the shelves was evidently about as an impossible task as McGarrett telling Danno to check every tire dealership on the island, or everyone that's eaten breakfast at the Honolulu International House of Pancakes since 1966. For those who feel like getting plastered, we have included a link to the rules for the Hawaii Five-O drinking game. Watch for flying hubcaps during chase scenes.

<![CDATA[Honolulu Lulu! 14-Hour Traffic Jam Snarls Oahu]]>

And we thought the 405 sucked. An Army excavator whacked a pedestrian bridge, forcing officials to shut down the H-1 freeway, the state's most populous island's main artery. The resultant traffic jam lasted for fourteen hours. Fourteen freaking hours. People were forced to sleep in their cars. Some abandoned their vehicles entirely. Others overheated or ran out of gas. You know, if Steve McGarrett were on the scene, he would've had the problem solved in an hour, minus time for commercial breaks. Us? We just would've called T.C. and had him fly us outta there. We'll send Rick back for the Ferrari later.

<![CDATA[Book 'Em Danno: Hawaii's Draconian New Speed Laws]]>

While we understand that 30 over in many situations can be an unsafe speed, and is generally regarded as such on the mainland, we think it's pretty surprisiing that Hawaii is adding any speed over 80, regardless of the posted limit, to some pretty heavy-duty speed penalities. If you're nailed, expect a $500-$1,000 fine, a 15- to 30-day license suspension, a mandatory driver education course and either 36 hours of community service or two to five days in jail. And that's just for a first offense. Apparently, in the post-McGarrett era, speeding is now as big a menace to the 50th state as Wo Fat once was.

<![CDATA[More on Maui's Junk-Car Clearing Problem]]>

They're crushin' so many junk cars on Maui, they went 'n' done broke their baler! The baler, that handy-dandy device that packages spent vehicles into smart little cubes, gave up the ghost and the determined people of the island are having to use a steam shovel to smash the cars up. However, fear not ye Mauians beset by junked vehicles and appliances a new baler is on its way from Romania, which will quintuple the disposal rate! All hail the Romanian baler!

<![CDATA[Maui Zowee: Hawaiian Island Takes on Junk Cars]]>
Okay, so Bakersfield wasn't a surprise, but to us mainlanders who've never had a chance to visit the Islands Formerly Known as Sandwich, we're a bit shocked that Hawaii's got an apparently serious junk car problem. Having declared the island a "disaster area," alliteratively-named Governor Linda Lingle has authorized the towing of the cars to a site at the old Puunene Airport, a temporary location until the island can finally cobble together a Department of Health-certified scrapyard. Is it just us, or does "Old Puunene Airport" sound like a euphemism for female genitalia?
