Wish the limo was based on a Checker airport taxi, but this is more open minded and diverse than I would have expected. None are particularly practical, but showcase interesting development trends. #alternativeenrgy
Sorry, but not including Electro-Automotive's E-Sports Racer = epic fail. It was a custom, 100 MPH electric racecar...a decade and a half ago. #alternativeenrgy
@Skunky: It's not an easy engine swap, not so much because of the engine but because the massive torque made the installation of a Allison tranny necessary. That meant cutting the firewall and the floor panels, plus all kinds of cutting and replacing of the original hard mounts.
Still, it's a 65 Impala that destroyed a Lambo in the 1/4 mile and is street legal.
You can find the episode online by looking for "Earth Day Impala Pimp My Ride", but look for the full hour long video, not the one hosted by MTV. #alternativeenrgy
Bolting a roofrack to an S-10 and covering it with a solar array is stupid-smart. It's stupid nobody's much done it yet, and smart - it verges on a half-assed perpetual motion machine. The longer it stays parked, the farther it'll go when you need it. And the truck chassis has the capacity to really load on the batteries so you can have a pretty long range, and still some left for payload when you need it.
The grass-covered Volkswookie is just too much. It is in desperate need of the Volkswacker. #alternativeenrgy
I hear lots of bitching and crying how it isn't a good copy, how it's not a decent chassis for offroading, yadda yadda yadda bullshit bullshit bullshit.
How many cars have the whiners built? Was that a perfect copy of something original? Or did you cut corners, take advantage of preexisting hardware, turn a blind eye etc.
The guy likes Humvees. He built one. It isn't a perfect copy but I'm confident that if he wanted to he could've built that. He brings a mountain of skills to the party and has wrought what $75,000 can't even buy anymore, and he's done it with a strong eye for detail without letting the concours d'elegance ruin his goal of achieving a roadable machine.
What do any of you care whether it has portal axles or not, a diesel or not? He's building his own truck, almost from scratch. He doesn't care for GM, which sells the AM General-built Humvee, so he's using Ford mechanicals. He's blazing his own trail.
That's Jalopnik, folks. I got nothing but respect.
If I'm going to go to this much trouble, which I never will because I don't have the time or money and probably won't for the next 30 years, I would at least do an up-armoured version with a 50 cal in a roof ring mount.
Christ, I need to do something with my life. This guy has hand-built a Hummer. I've spend most of if sleeping, studying working, or Jalopniking. I feel worthless. .
Well.... He built it 'cuz he wanted to. Never claimed it was a real Hummer, built it with materials and parts that were in his budget, looks like he's treating it as a hobby,
has some fantastic fab skills. So it doesn't have full independent (does have TTB front axles, though)and geared hubs.... Who cares? It's got a serious cool factor because it's hand built, and he probably could care less what the rest of us think.
I'm glad to see he took his inspiration from the actual Humvee instead of the poseur Hummers.
This will never have quite the backwoods capability of the real deal, considering its civilian origins, but there's so much added-value aftermarket gear out there that the actual limit of its ability may be beyond the reach of mortal drivers. And if it ever breaks down, I trust the builder can set it back to rights.
@tonyola: A certifiably-nuts buddy of mine once blew the rear axles out of his father's late-'80s F150 4x4 (literally).. so he just shifted it into 4-low and drove the last mile home dragging the assend down the road. (I wonder if I'd be black-flagged at LeMons for trying that in my F150?)
@tonyola: Sure it's possible. I've seen lots of car haulers like this:
Hack off the frame behind the cab, tack on a low-profile car trailer, and keep it in 4-high all the time. Not sure how well that sits with the transfer case, but it seems to work.
I knew it; I knew the "junker" F150 would be in ten times better shape than the one I've been driving for the past three years... and my sticker runs out Sunday, too. Quick: stop that guy before he crushes that Ford body.
I don't get it, is the H1 like really, really expensive or exotic? (Not up-to-date on this stuff) I mean, a Countach is like exotic and getting an old one in a good condition is going to break your bank, but is an H1 worth that much over a Ford truck?
