Call me crazy, but if it has AWD, does it really need launch control?

In related news; Chrysler, facing its own warranty nightmares, has announced that they will no longer be selling vehicles with transmissions.

I read somewhere that clutch replacements on the GT-R necessitate the replacement of the entire transmission. So a spent clutch costs the same as a mashed gear...a lot.

So if I understand this correctly, the launch control puts undue stress on the tranny because the AWD has such great traction, thus putting all the strain on the drivetrain, while almost all of the "lesser" competitors allow wheelspin which, while resulting in slower times, also prevents the tranny from exploding.

I could definetely see the warranty pain for Nissan. They engineered a specific feature into the car that if the owner uses, they void the warranty.

While racing and hard driving can be part of any sports car ownership, in this case I could see how owners would argue that Nissan gave them the gun to shoot themselves with.

Its probably been giving them legal difficulties in arbitration.

I suppose this proves that there's no such thing in this world as a free launch.

So now without the electronannies to keep your car pointed something like straight down the quarter, the only thing you void is your bowels when the torque pops the wheels loose and the horizon rises to smack down your premature fantasies of racer fame as you hurtle sideways into infinity.

    Wait, Infiniti? No, okay.

It's funny how many people were so quick to say the R35 was the best automobile produced by anyone ever when it first came out, that are now lined up saying "it's a POS, you should've just bought a REAL car"

Maybe if Nissan had someone build them an old fashioned manual trans, it would take the abuse better.

@patrickmurray: Let's start a company that swaps their fancy transmission with Muncie Rock Crusher 4-speeds!

"It'll make the 2009 GT-R really special. It'll be the only R35 with launch control."

And if you believe that, I've got some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell you

Does this make the Cobalt SS Turbo more advanced than the GT-R. It has a launch control that doesn't torpedo the tranny.

@jb carries a sign proclaiming Repent! The endtime is nigh!: No, it just means the Cobalt SS Turbo makes low enough power that it's not a problem for the transmission.

@elwood: You'd think that for the proportional price difference, there would be hardware engineered to handle the proportionate power increase.

@danio3834: Well, for a race car, the transmission is a consumable. If you treat your car like a race car (i.e. launch control), why would you be surprised when it breaks?

@elwood: Definetely true, I'm not sure that many people are truly surprised that abuse of the system has resulted in breakage. Its just that until now, manufacturers really didn't have a way of proving you were racing your car. They knew, but coudln't prove, so they'd cover it.

I don't think anyone would care about the issue if Nissan was covering the transmissions. The driver knew what he was doing, the dealer techs knew what happened, but in most cases in the past, stuff would get covered, and owners would be happy.

Now Nissan has a tattler built in that can confirm to the manufacturer exactly what kind of abuse was going on and theyre using it to give the customer the big FU.

IMO, Nissan should have better covered their ass by not including the self destruct mode as an option, or having a better plan to deal with broken transmissions as they came.

Now, it just looks like a black eye on them.

I also suffer from launch control problems, typically after a night of excessive alcohol consumption.
