That's right: Nissan elected to bring a bone-stock GT-R to SEMA, almost as a challenge to the customizers on-site. "Blank canvas, boys. Whatcha gonna do now?" it taunts, no doubt causing the creative wheels to turn even faster than when confronted with someone else's interpretation of the car. Well played, Nissan. Well played. Also, considering mods apparently void the warranty, we should have expected it.

<![CDATA[ Branew Nissan GT-R Is All Show And No More Go For SEMA ]]> The new Nissan GT-R is just too hard to modify for performance, what with the tricky, unhackable computer system and the already Porsche-confounding performance. That's why Japanese tuners Branew brought their Branew GT-R to SEMA with only appearance upgrades. The car gets a revised front clip, side skirts, massive 23 inch wheels, a triple-tipped exhaust outlet, functional spoiler and rear splitter mounted on a very C5 Corvette-inspired tail end. The Branew GT-R will probably suffer from the classic tuner problem of being slower with all the extra pretty stuff on it — a characteristic most tuner car enthusiasts are able to ignore.

<![CDATA[ Tetsu GTR On SEMA Show Floor Proves Money Cannot Buy Taste ]]> Much like the falling leaves represented on the Tetsu GTR's matte black hood, we've been awaiting the SEMA arrival of the Japanese tuner's latest Bentley concoction. Are we fans of the odd paint scheme, Bucky Beaver front grille and Scoobtastic rear spoiler? Not so much. Are we fans of the 800 HP under that leafy hood? You betcha! All in all, the Tetsu GTR is a fate unworthy of just about any Bentley...except for the Bentley Continental GT, which makes it both horrifying and appropriate. Not unlike the SEMA show itself.

<![CDATA[ Backyard Custom Nissan Skyline Explores Boundaries Of Tasteful Restraint ]]> We had to avert our eyes when posting this, as this Nissan Skyline is so incredibly beautiful we worried its majesty would ruin our opinions of all lesser cars to follow. Perfection comes in the form of extreeeeeme stickers, three-abreast hood scoops, a non-functional roof scoop, at least two sets of driving lights, a bookshelf triple-high spoiler, and not one, not two, but three sharkfin antennas. This machine quite obviously is capable of extreme performance and should absolutely be taken seriously. By our decal calculations, it's easily capable of pulling dyno runs in excess of 1500 HP and hitting top speeds around 300 MPH. This makes the green GT-R look like diced liver.

<![CDATA[ Does Doing Donuts In A New Nissan GT-R Void The Warranty? ]]> So now that we've learned how turning off the VDC to use the lanuch control on the 2009 Nissan GT-R can void its warranty, we're wondering if that would also include hoonage like this smoke session. Lucky for this guy, he "bought it brand new just 2 hav fun and burn rubber in. warranty dosent matter and money is not the crteria here!!!! if u know wat im sayin!!" Word. Video after the jump.

<![CDATA[ Godzilla Smash! Another Totaled Nissan GT-R ]]> After seeing the Nissan GT-R crashed in America, in Malaysia, in Hong Kong, and on the Isle Of Man, we've found another. This white GT-R, with just 349 miles on the odometer, has shown up totaled in a Nashville auction yard. It's said to have about $55,000 worth of damage, so we're not sure anyone is going to bid very much when it hits the block today. No word on just how the GT-R got to be in this predicament, but we're pretty sure this isn't covered by the warranty.

<![CDATA[ GT-R Owner Busts Tranny Using Launch Control, Nissan Claims Issue Not Covered Under Warranty ]]> Someone claiming to own a Nissan GT-R has proclaimed on the North American GT-R Owners Club forums (NAGTROC) that his GT-R's transmission has broken after multiple uses of the vehicle's launch control function. The owner says that when the vehicle was then brought to the Nissan service center, where he was told the destroyed transmission would not be covered under warranty due to the car being driven too often with the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) shut off.

Another forum member clarifies that "you have to turn off VDC to activate LC, and you have to sign a paper saying your warranty is voided if you turn of VDC, and while VDC is off, you cause damage. It is clearly stated in the manual/warranty, as well as is put into writing and you have to sign, when you pick up the car." Below the jump, the personal account, in the owner's words, from a thread titled "do not launch your gtr or take the vdc off, time to bend over guys its gonna hurt."

I was driving my gtr two weeks ago and I heard a loud noise coming from the rear. I turned immediately had my gtr towed to crown nissan st. petersburg fl. They didn't touch my car only called some techs from tennessee to look at the car and record the noise, 4 days later two guys from japan to download some info from the car then left. Then I get a call from the dealer to tell me the news, and they told me that the car was driven without vdc too much and nissan will not warranty the transmission which they said was destroyed, I asked them how much to fix it they told me 20k, no freaking way I will pay 20k on top of what i just paid for the car. I called the gtr number and also talked to nissan consumer affairs got nowhere, now the car is sitting at the dealer. I know we shouldn't launch the car but why own it if you cant use this function, don't sell a car that goes 0-60 in 3.4 sec if the only way you can achieve this speed is to void the warranty , false advertising. Here is the bad news people were fearing it has happened to me and Nissan has told me there are already three people in my shoes, if you are one of these people email me, we have got to get together on this. Just think if any of you guys have taken the vdc off just a few times you have already voided your warranty, good luck what a joke nissan.

Since poor grammar doesn't lead to high credibility, we're wondering what the owner isn't telling us. At the same time, it seems odd that Nissan would build a supercar with a significant part like the transmission unable to handle hard use. What do you think? Is this guy a moron that hooned his car beyond the reasonable limits, or does he have a valid point to his complaints? [read the entire thread at NAGTROC] (Hat tip to Michael!)

<![CDATA[ Most Hideous Nissan GT-R Ever? ]]> Messing with the Nissan GT-R is risky. Even though you're not supposed to, sometimes the results can be quite tasteful. The problem, though, is when something like this happens. Someone decided it would be a good idea to wrap their GT-R in black and bright-green matte-finish vinyl. As if that wasn't bad enough, a set of gaudy 22" rims have also been bolted on. The Zele carbon fiber body kit wouldn't have been terrible by itself, but it just adds to the mess here. Sure, the car probably has a bit more oomph thanks to an HKS boost controller and a Mine's exhaust, but it still can't outrun its ugly. Surprisingly, the car does not belong to Brian O'Conner, Paul Walker's character in The Fast And The Furious. Remember his Eclipse? We've included it in the gallery below...see if you can figure out which car is which.

<![CDATA[ Virtual First Drive Of Sweet Citroen GTbyCITROEN Concept In GT5 Prologue ]]> We had a chance this morning to be one of the first to drive the GTbyCITROEN Concept on Gran Turismo 5: Prologue at the Paris Auto Show. The car, easily the hottest concept here at the show, was designed as a joint venture between Citroen and Polyphony Digital, the makers of Gran Turismo. We'll gladly admit we are not virtuosos of GT5, as we should be, but once we figured out what everything did, it was off to the races. By our uncalibrated estimates, the GTbyCITROEN has a tendency to understeer more than we expected, but it is fast, and it'll handle high speeds pretty well. Oh, and after we took a look inside the concept, we were interested to see that dash provides a sweet heads-up unit displaying current velocity. We totally need to get a PS3.

<![CDATA[ Toyo Tires Shows Off 2008 SEMA Line-Up ]]> The Nissan GT-R, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Studebaker hot rod, disfigured Bentley Continental GT, and lifted Toyota Tundra you see here are the five cars Toyo Tires will be bringing to the upcoming 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. But what's the one thing they all have in common—besides wearing Toyo rubber? They're all ridiculous caricatures! Well, the 1931 Studebaker Model 54 hot rod might not be so bad, but if the rendering pictured is accurate, its non-existent ride height means it's nothing but a trailer queen. The most subtly tuned of the rest is the Nissan GT-R, which sports some carbon-fiber body parts, an Amuse titanium exhaust and Endless six-piston brakes. The rest of the bunch are a bit more radical.

The green Mitsubish Lancer Evo X is boasting 650 HP. The Bentley Continental GT (yes that's what's hiding under that awful body kit) brags of 800 HP. The Tundra? Well it's a huge lifted truck with green tribal grpahics...need we say more? And to think this is just the tip of the SEMA iceberg. [via MotorAuthority]

<![CDATA[ Seibon Dry-Look Carbon Fiber Makes Godzilla Look Cheap ]]> Uh-oh, more folks messing with Godzilla. At first we liked the way the dry carbon fiber hood and trunk on this Nissan GT-R looked compared to the more popular glossy stuff. But the more we stare at it, the more we think it looks kinda cheap. We're reminded of guys driving around in Honda Civic coupes with carbon fiber hoods that were once glossy but have since faded in the sun. That's not good considering these parts from Seibon are so new they're not even out yet. Perhaps it's just that the rest of the car doesn't match the dry carbon fiber?

If they'd made the rest of the car flat black it would match better. Or perhaps they should have removed the rear wing. Do you think it would look better with normal "wet" carbon fiber, or is there a way to salvage the "dry" look? [via GTRblog]

Obviously the large rear wing of has been removed, but to smooth things out even more, the rear reflectors have been tinted black and the Nissan badge in back has been removed. The owner also apparently decided to throw on an aftermarket exhaust from performance tuner Mine's, and a set of BBS LM-DBK wheels, just for good measure. [via GTRblog]

<![CDATA[ Amuse Squeezes 600 HP From Nissan GT-R ]]> If you thought the HKS GT570 was a bit underpowered, this Amuse-tuned Nissan GT-R should satisfy. It's cranking out 602 HP at 6500 RPM and 571 lb-ft of torque at 5300 RPM. That's enough grunt to warrant the addition of boy-racer bits like a huge rear wing, fat lip spoiler, stiffer height-adjustable springs and carbon-kevlar Recaro seats. But, despite the extra flair, the Amuse GT-R weighs in at 100lbs less than the standard car. Parts should be officially arriving in the US early next year, but for now you can check out a clip of the Amuse GT-R ripping up Tsukuba (back when the car was only making 582 HP) from Best Motoring after the jump.

<![CDATA[ HKS GT570 Nissan GT-R Makes 559 HP... At The Wheels ]]> Plenty of tuning options for the Nissan GT-R are popping up, but few are as appealing as this HKS GT570 power upgrade. The standard GT-R is rated at 480 HP, but this kit is supposed to up that to just over 570 HP at the flywheel by way of a new exhaust, intake pipe kit, boost controller and wastegate actuators. A shop in Hong Kong decided to find out for themselves, so they installed one of the HKS kits, strapped the car to a dyno, and ended up with a reading of about 559 HP at the wheels. Considering that you expect 10-15% of the power at the flywheel to be lost in the drivetrain on most cars, that's an astonishing result. Either the GT-R's drivetrain is stupidly efficient, the HKS kit is underrated, or perhaps a bit of both. Video of Godzilla on the treadmill after the jump.

<![CDATA[ Nissan GT-R Crashed In The USA ]]> Godzilla, or the new Nissan GT-R as some call it, has only just started stomping around our shores, already we've got our first report of a GT-R smashed up somewhere stateside. Details are vague (some say the GT-R got into some fisticuffs with a Corvette ZR1 in a dark alley) but it's clear the incident wasn't exactly a minor fender-bender. The forum fanboys at MyGTR think it may have had something to do with the GT-R being driven into a pizza parlor, so maybe it was trying to take out a Ferrari or something. Geez, whatever happened to fighting it out on the Nürburgring?

After seeing the first crash of a GT-R in Malaysia, and another one crunched by the boys at Top Gear, we're sadly starting to get used to the sight of Godzilla with battle scars. Perhaps the beast really is too fast to tame. (Hat tip to Joe!) [MyGTR]

Now we see what it looks like in all its hopefully lead-free paint. They've even found a real Nissan GT-R to pose next to it. Maybe it's actually the full-scale model ready to do battle with the GM Autobots? Okay, obviously not, but it's too bad we wont be seeing this GT-R up on the big screen in the upcoming Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. These shots were taken at the 2008 Chara Hobby show in Chiba, Japan. The Tomy Takara toy should be going into production in the next few months, but getting your hands on one over here in the US may take a little longer.

<![CDATA[ Nissan GT-R Spec-V Delayed, NISMO GT-R "Evolution" S-Tune Coming Soon ]]> According to the Frenchies at Le Blog Auto, the Nissan GT-R Spec-V has allegedly been delayed and is now expected to debut as late as next year. But rumors are also swirling of a new GT-R variant to be launched in the meantime. Although it's not to be confused as a Mitsubishi, some are throwing around a name of "Evolution" for this NISMO-tuned GT-R. Although we like the sound of NISMO goodies, can we really believe that'll be the name? More importantly, what else can we expect?

Well, despite the name Evolution coming from the interwebosphere, this may be nothing more than an example of the name getting a little bit lost in translation as we're also hearing this mid-range GT-R may go by the more historically appropriate name of "S-Tune."

This middle-of-the-road model may even see an unveil as early as this August 20th to coincide with the launch of the new line of NISMO goodies available as upgrades for standard GT-R owners. Expect new wheels, exhaust system, stiffer suspension, some aero add-ons, and a reprogrammed ECU. Just reading that list probably makes us want to go play Gran Tursimo. Needless to say, this new GT-R S-Tune sounds like a pretty good substitute while we all wait for the full on Mecha-Godzilla GT-R Spec-V. [leblogauto, via TMR]

<![CDATA[ Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR: Radical Coachbuilt 535 HP Corvette Revealed In Detroit ]]> Yesterday evening we saw the Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR make its public debut here at Cauley Ferrari in West Bloomfield, MI. It's rare to have the chance to cover a car from its earliest concept sketches, through the build process and all the way until its public unveiling. But yesterday evening we completed that cycle with the Specter Werkes' special Corvette. The GTR shares only the roof, rear hatch and glass with the exterior of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 upon which it is based and has a footprint widened by four-and-a-half inches. The overall design effect is one of taking the C6 Corvette, mixing it with a touch of Viper RT/10, and adding a liberal dash of kick-in-the-pants.

After the nine-foot-tall leggy models pulled the wraps off the GTR, buyer number one Rollie Purifoy pulled the car into the crush of an enthusiastic crowd, giving us an opportunity to spend a couple of minutes talking to company owner Jeff Nowicki. Understandably, Jeff was pretty happy with the end result of over a year of hard work. And why shouldn't he be? Instead of tacking on styling like most aftermarket niche builders, Jeff and his team took the approach of enhancing the Corvette shape with unique styling elements that have the effect of turning the 'Vette up to eleven.

Though many levels of engine tune are available, this first model is based off the Z06, and snorts out 535 HP with 530 lb-ft of torque breathing through a beautiful-sounding Corsa exhaust. It certainly does sound like an eleven.

Let's be honest here though for a moment — this is a $35,000 custom-built body option. You can drop it onto any C6 version of your choosing, making a car with a price range of $75,000 all the way up to more than $100,000. That's not exactly chicken scratch and certainly not an option Joe Sixpack will be taking, but for those few who know what they want and have the cash to buy it, this is a damn impressive-looking car.

The level of fit and finish points to the fact that this is more than just a rebodied car, and the level of design cohesion drew compliments from even the GM Corvette team members in attendance. It's the little touches — like the relocation of the electric door opener from the trailing edge of the door to the wheel well — that make this one of the most badass aftermarket Corvettes we've ever seen, and we congratulate the team at Specter Werkes for a job well done.

SPECTER WERKES/SPORTS UNVEILS C6 CORVETTE GTR #1 TROY, Mich. - Specter Werkes/Sports unveiled the first C6 Corvette GTR at Cauley Ferrari, in West Bloomfield, Mich. Wearing signature wide bodywork, suspension upgrades and equipped with a Matrix II LS3 V-8 rated at 535 emissions-legal horsepower, it was built for Rollie Purifoy, of Purifoy Chevrolet, in Fort Lupton, Colo.

The all-new, C6-based Corvette GTR retains the intrinsic character of the Corvette, augmenting it with appearance, performance and luxury enhancements. It is a distinctive and exclusive sports car with exceptional capability, whether on the street or track.

The GTR package is available on all C6 Corvette models, including the base coupe and convertible, the Z06 and ZR1. Orders are being accepted immediately, with product and ordering information available at www.spectergtr.com or 248-583-9559.

"We are very proud to launch the C6 Corvette GTR with Rollie Purifoy, from Purifoy Chevrolet, and Jeff Cauley, from Cauley Chevrolet and Cauley Ferrari," said Jeff Nowicki, Specter Werkes/Sports founder. "The new GTR offers enthusiasts everything they're looking for in a sports car - performance, great looks and guaranteed exclusivity."

The GTR's expressive, widened bodywork is complemented with the use of exposed carbon fiber details. Standard and optional GTR features include:
Unique GTR bodywork, including:
*Front fascia, carbon fiber splitter, extractor hood, front fenders, doors, rocker panels, rear fenders, rear fascia, carbon fiber rear diffuser, carbon fiber mirror caps, Cleartastic paint protection, paint and assembly
*Custom GTR headlamp bezels with exposed carbon fiber appearance
*Unique tail lamps and center high-mounted stop lamp
*Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires; 285/30ZR19 (front) and 335/25ZR20 (rear)
*Forgeline or HRE wheels; 19-inch in the front and 20-inch in the rear
*StopTech ST60 front brakes and ST40 rear brakes
*Carbon fiber fuel rail covers and carbon fiber, low-restriction air box
*Hotchkis stablilizer bar kit
*GTR-embroidered seats and serial-numbered dash plaque
*CORSA/Specter stainless steel performance exhaust system
*GTR badges

The Corvette GTR package carries a base price of $34,995, with a variety of high-performance powertrain options available for additional cost. Custom paint treatment is also available. Each vehicle is hand-built, numbered and fully documented for the customer.

Distinctive design
Styling that accents the Corvette's design is a hallmark of Specter Werkes/Sports and the C6 GTR takes that philosophy to the next level, with a completely redesigned body. Like the original C5 GTR, the C6 version is based on widened bodywork that supports the larger wheel/tire combination. It also gives the car a more aggressive stance - as do the racing-inspired front and rear fascias.

"The GTR's design sharpens and embellishes many of the Corvette's design cues, but doesn't eliminate them," said Nowicki. "It is a design that respects and celebrates the Corvette's design heritage, but builds on it to suit the interest of our customers - enthusiasts who are looking for a unique and exclusive product."

At 77 inches, the GTR's bodywork is 4.5 inches wider at the rear fenders (2.25 inches per side) than a regular-production C6 Corvette and 1 inch wider than the Corvette Z06. The physical difference may seem small, but the overall effect, along with a slightly longer overall body length, creates a unique proportion to the GTR that is aggressive and suggests speed even when stationary.

Specter Werkes/Sports replaces the front and rear fenders; front and rear fascias; doors, rocker panels and hood - everything except the roof panel and rear hatch - with special, hand-formed GTR panels. Each car is completely repainted and re-assembled with the new bodywork at Specter Werke's Troy, Mich. facility.

GTR standard equipment also includes a number of exposed carbon fiber details, including:
*Front splitter
*Rear diffuser
*Outside mirror caps
*Headlamp surrounds

A bold, LED-lit rear center-mounted stop lamp is integrated in the rear fascia. It was originally designed for the Cadillac CTS, and gives the GTR an unmistakable rear appearance.

GTR #1 details
C6 Corvette GTR #1 is powered by Specter's emissions-legal Matrix II engine package for the LS3 engine. It is a "stroker" engine package that boosts displacement from 376 cubic inches (6.2L) to 416 cubic inches (6.8L). That is achieved with a Callies 4340-forged crankshaft that delivers a 4.00-inch stroke. Forged rods from Manley and forged pistons from Mahle round out the rotating assembly.

The camshaft is a special grind from Comp Cams and the LS3 heads' combustion chambers were enlarged from 71cc to 72cc in order to maintain an 11:1 compression ratio. With stainless steel long tube headers and a low-restriction air intake, the engine is rated at 535 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque. The engine also features carbon fiber fuel rail covers and a yellow-painted intake manifold.

The Matrix II LS3 channels power to the pavement via Forgeline VR3P wheels, measuring 19 x 11 inches in the front and 20 x 12 inches in the rear. They wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires (285/30ZR19, front, and 335/25ZR20, rear). Behind the wheels are StopTech brakes, featuring ST60 six-piston calipers and 15-inch slotted rotors in the front and ST40 four-piston calipers and 14-inch slotted rotors in the rear. The calipers' yellow color contrasts with the HRE wheels' black center sections. The GTR also features Hotchkis adjustable stabilizer bars.

On the outside, C6 GTR #1 is painted a gorgeous BASF liquid silver color, the richness of which appears wet to the touch. It is a premium color choice and represents the nearly unlimited paint options available to customers. Inside, GTR-standard embroidered seats and Spinneybeck leather trim details contrast elegantly with the Corvette's black interior. A Specter Werkes/Sports production plaque is mounted on the center console.

GTR legacy
The Specter Werkes/Sports GTR was first launched a decade ago and saw the creation of nearly 30 specialized cars that were delivered across the country - including the two most notable GTRs, which were created for Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., in 2001.

Specter Werkes/Sports is an automotive prototype and fabrication facility based in Troy, Mich. It specializes in race-proven engine performance enhancements and creating specialty accessories for C5 and C6 Corvettes, the Cadillac CTS and more. The company's flagship project is the Corvette GTR.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Crashes Nissan GT-R ]]> Top Gear Magazine was recently having some fun on the Isle of Man with a Nissan GT-R, but the playtime ended unexpectedly when the driver of the GT-R slammed on the brakes. That would be fine in any normal car, but Godzilla came to a halt so abruptly that the Audi behind it just couldn't stop quickly enough. [GT-R Blog] Update: The guys at CarTribe say this is indeed the same GT-R that the Stig had out on the Top Gear test track. We also know that the black beast (the only GT-R officially imported by Nissan UK so far) was quickly repaired and is now back to normal, as can be vouched for by anyone who saw it run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed just a few days after the accident.

<![CDATA[ Nissan GT-R Laps Top Gear Track With A Time Of... ]]> After last week, when Clarkson took the GT-R across Japan, many wondered what it would do at the hands of Mr. Stig-oto. Well, guess what they did this week? Don't worry, we're not going to spoil the surprise of The Stig taking the 2009 Nissan GT-R around the Top Gear test track. You'll have to watch the video for that if you're not willing to wait for "other means." Or, if for some reason the video's not working, you can click here for a screen shot of the board post-race. All we know is, it's called Godzilla for a reason — and it's because this "Datsun" is monstrous.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Races JDM Nissan GT-R Vs. Bullet Train, We Spoil Winner Below The Jump ]]> In this week's episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson takes a JDM Nissan GT-R for a bit of a race against a Japanese Bullet Train holding Hammond and May — with both going coast-to-coast to Tokyo. The winner and the rest of the show re-cap below the jump. And yes, it's a spoiler, so if you're still waiting to watch it, don't even think of going there.

Clarkson-Top-Gear-Nissan-GTR.jpg
As you'd expect — they both got lost. But, as you'd also expect, the GT-R beat the boys in public transit — by 3 minutes and 12 seconds.

But, despite the win, Clarkson struggled to love the GT-R — the way it looks, the way it drives and for being "without soul." He just "...wished it would — at road speeds — run its hand down my pants and give it a little rummage."

But, in addition to Godzilla, Clarkson took the world's most beautiful car on earth* — the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione — around the Top Gear track and thought it was absolute rubbish. While that may or may not be the case, we're in total agreement with Clarkson on at least one thing: "Buying this car for it's dynamic abilities is like buying a porn film for its plot." We couldn't agree more, Jezza.

*As judged by myself, of course.

Matt Farah over at Garage419 has sources who claim the tires may have been shaved for more grip. But how much do Nurburgring lap times really matter? If you were choosing between a ZR1 and a GT-R, would you care about 'Ring times? These questions and more, as Matt and cross-continental racer Alex Roy debate the hot topics on Garage419. <![CDATA[ ASI Tetsu-Tuned Continental GTR Makes Us Feel Like Taking A Shower ]]> We've always had a love/hate relationship with the Bentley Continental GT. On the one hand, it's a staggeringly powerful freight train of a car that will do everything but powder your behind (and not catch on fire). On the other hand, it just doesn't have the character of a Bentley; it seems more noveau riche than old-world land-rocket. What better way to address that issue than for ASI Tetsu to add gaudy gold paint, flowery hood graphics, a big spoiler on the trunk and a body kit? Oh and another 248 HP for a grand total of 800. Damn you fates, why must you make this Bentley such a poisoned pill?

<![CDATA[ Haltech-Tuned 2009 Nissan GT-R Gives A Down Under Strip Show, Bests Inside Line's Quarter-Mile ]]> The 2009 Nissan GT-R's one powerful wonder of technology. The ECU's so advanced we're told it makes you feel like you're behind the wheel of the world's most advanced driving simulator, like some sort of Playstation reality game. As even the most high-and-mighty of the buff-book world have found out first hand, even with all the technologically advanced doo-dads and doo-hickeys behind the dash, the 3.8-liter V6 rated at 480 HP and a torque rating almost equal to that (430 lb-ft for those of you who are counting), this AWD Godzilla-like beast is no toy. A toy wouldn't have let Inside Line snag themselves a 1/4-mile time of 11.6 seconds using the new GT-R's launch control system on an abandoned airstrip. But that amazing time's not stopping the Aussie tuning shop of Haltech from cracking that Game-Boy-like ECU and playing around with the timing to see what they can come up with. The tuning shop from the land down under took their ECU-tuned GT-R to a local strip to find out what they could come up with on the 1/4 mile and the Godzilla fan-boys from GTRblog were there to record the showing. Their results after the jump.

haltech-GT_R-11_1-Run-Time-1.jpgThose numbers on the time slip appear to be correct — a 1/4-mile time of 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 124.86 MPH! Keep in mind this is the Haltech's engineering team's first time — and first run — on the track with the re-tuned GT-R. The second run — well — that one didn't turn out quite as well. They only managed to equal the Inside Line numbers with an 11.6-second 1/4-mile run. Something to do with screwing up the launch control. Yeah, such a screw-up — any production car with an 11.6-second 1/4-mile run on a screw-up will more than likely remain on our "must have" list. Just sayin'...

One can only imagine what those numbers will end up looking like once the Haltech boys have finished playing around under the hood. Although we normally have to say we don't so much like tunage of the new GT-R, we know we're anxious to find out what Haltech ends up giving Godzilla. And then just wait until they get their hands on the Spec-V version in a year. (Hat tip to Jeff!) [Haltech via GTRblog]

<![CDATA[ Nissan To Sponsor GT Racing Academy Competition ]]> Details have emerged from Sony's "PlayStation Day" in London that Nissan will be sponsoring a Gran Turismo-branded competition with one hell of an eventual prize: the opportunity to compete in a 24-hour race in Dubai next January. Getting to that race is quite the task, though. Beginning on May 23 you can fire up your PlayStation 3 and hit up the PlayStation Network to begin the dirty work of qualifying by virtual driving races.

To get to the 24-hour race it begins with elimination tournaments for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. This will eventually whittle down to two winners who will then partake in four months worth of racing lessons eventually leading to the opportunity to take Godzilla around the track, for 24 hours of Dubai racing action. Sony will also be filming the bulk of the academy and will be made available for download on the PlayStation Network.

That only means it's time to get practicing. [Via Kotaku]

<![CDATA[ Nissan GT-R Officially Dry-Laps Nürburgring In 7:29, Makes Us Wet ]]> The friendly Finnish Fans of Cars all over the World tell us today the new 2009 Nissan GT-R can now lay claim to being one of the fastest production cars in the world — in Nürburgring lap times. Nissan claims GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki completed the famous German circuit in just 7 minutes and 29 seconds during runs on April 16th and 17th. According to their records, this puts the GT-R in second place for fastest laps by unmodified production cars — that's just behind the Pagani Zonda F's blistering 7 minutes and 27 seconds last November. Guess that wet lap time last year of 7 minutes and 38 seconds was just a test run, eh?

Kazutoshi Mizuno, the GT-R's Chief Vehicle Engineer said

"At last year's testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere - I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise."
Yeah well, we're beginning to think that car could make a hero out of even us. [via World Car Fans] ]]>

<![CDATA[ Unmoddable GT-R ECU Cracked, Bye-Bye Speed Limiter ]]> Remember the ECU in the Godzilla-like 2009 Nissan GT-R? Yeah, it was supposedly uncrackable and unmoddable and we'd been told would even brick the car if tampered with. That's apparently not the case for at least one set of Japanese tuners who've cracked the JDM version of the new Nissan GT-R's already infamous ECU and removed that nasty 112 mph speed limiter.

That 112mph limiter was imposed on the JDM version by the ECU whenever the GPS sensed the GT-R wasn't on a racetrack. The team that cracked the ECU will continue to tweak the system until the GT-R is officially released in the United States and will have documentation ready to present to tuners happy to remove the speed limiter and otherwise tune their new Godzilla toys. Better luck next time, Nissan. [COBB]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Nissan GT-R Spec V? ]]> Nissan's latest version of Godzilla's barely hitting the streets and we're already hearing they've rolled out a prototype test unit for the long-rumored up-powered version — the Nissan GT-R Spec V. Well, the spy shooters at KGP claim they've spotted it being unloaded off a truck at Ghosn's Nürburgring test workshop. They claim it's the "Spec V" due to some visual differences between the test car and the standard 2009 Nissan GT-R including a revised front splitter, which sports some additional air intake slits, presumably to feed more cooling air to the brakes. New six-spoke wheels also house what appear to be a revised braking system. The golden Brembo brake calipers were an ever-present feature even on the first GT-R prototypes, but they're a no-show on this tester. KGP wonders whether we're perhaps looking at an upgraded ceramic composite braking system. All we know is if they're correct, Godzilla just got a serious dose of steroids and we're wondering what will happen to the stock GT-R's 3.3 second 0-to-60 time. Full spy report after the jump.

One of our spies just photographed what appears to be a prototype for Nissan's long-rumored, long-promised GT-R Spec V. Caught as it was unloaded off a truck at Nissan's Nürburgring workshop, this test car has some visual differences from a standard GT-R. The visible changes are certainly subtle, and not as far-reaching as some had expected, but the differences are present nonetheless, suggesting that Nissan's GT-R—which already leaves a Porsche 911 Turbo gasping in its wake—is being prepped to be even more formidable.

This test car gets a revised front splitter, which sports some additional air intake slits, presumably to feed more cooling air to the brakes. New six-spoke wheels also house what appear to be a revised braking system. The golden Brembo brake calipers were an ever-present feature even on the first GT-R prototypes, but they're a no-show on this tester. Could we be looking at an upgraded ceramic composite braking system?

With a curb weight of 3,836 pounds, the GT-R is no featherweight. And while the standard GT-R obviously overcomes any weight penalty in heroic fashion, it's compelling to imagine a GT-R that's some 200-plus pounds lighter. Enter the GT-R Spec V, which is rumored to shave at least that much weight thanks to the use of carbon fiber body panels, and other assorted techniques. The prototype photographed today has a portion of its rear wing blacked-out, suggesting it is one of the carbon fiber pieces that will make up the Spec V package.

Additional power gains will augment the GT-R Spec V's weight loss regimen. Considering that early dyno tests in the media report that the GT-R may be making more power than its official claim of 473 horsepower, some sources claim that 550 horses could be on tap in the Spec V.

Once this GT-R is fully prepped for testing duty we hope to get a closer look to assess any other weight-saving steps Nissan may have taken. We also look forward to seeing if this lighter-weight GT-R can lap the 'Ring any faster than the 7 minute 38 second lap logged last fall. We suspect it will, as long as the current snow flurries currently wafting on the track dissipate as the week progresses. We'll be watching developments very closely. Stay tuned.

<![CDATA[ Don't Mess With The Nissan GT-R ]]> Just in case you've bought a new GT-R, but you lack any common sense when it comes to vehicular accessorization, Nissan has included these helpful illustrations in the owner's manual for the JDM version. We're guessing the big X means you're not supposed to put giant fender flares and oversized spoilers on the GT-R. Nissan apparently thinks they got it right on their own, thank you very much. Although someone better tell that to Mine's. The other illustrations have more helpful hints; like how to use a strategically placed cola can to sabotage someone's brakes, or how to push your unsuspecting buddy's GT-R onto a railway crossing. <![CDATA[ Mine's GT-R Runs 59.4sec Lap of Tsukuba, Coming To US? ]]> No, I'm not saying that I personally have a Nissan GT-R. I'm talking about Mine's, the Japanese Tuner of Gran Turismo and Best Motoring fame. Recently, they brought their R35 GT-R with all the Mine's go-fast goodies to the Tsukuba Circuit to do some testing, and they left with a best lap of 59.367 seconds. To put this in perspective, a normal R35 GT-R will run a lap of about 1:02, and a new Mitsubishi Evo X or Subaru STi will do it in about 1:06. To run a sub-one-minute lap is a benchmark for turbo-crazed JDM tuners. Of course, with a notable lap time, there are always factors (weather, driver) that have little to do with the actual car. Either way, the Their's Your's Mine's GT-R is indeed an impressive piece of kit. They've upgraded the suspension, exhaust, brakes, intake, rear spoiler, and the computer chip. Still in development are parts to further aid the aerodynamics of the mirrors, hood, front canards, front spoiler and side outlets. And what's even better— we hear they're bringing it to the US.

All we've heard is that Mine's is bringing their white test car here next month. We're not exactly sure why this mega-Godzilla is coming to our shores, but we thought we'd give you a warning now, just in case things go terribly wrong and the monster destroys a city or eats a helicopter or something.
