What makes this red 8C different from any other 8C? The exhaust note has been described as "darker," which would aptly describe the Ferrari California's 4.3-liter direct-injection V8 that reportedly powers the rumored 8C GTA. Whether or not the GTA actually sees the light of day, we'd love to see additional speculation just for an excuse to post more 8C pictures.

<![CDATA[ Real Life Grand Theft Auto - Portland, Maine Edition ]]> We didn't actually know Portland, Maine had crime or even roads, we always just assumed it was an idyllic beach town where Bostonians drove for long weekends to eat big lobsters. Apparently it's actually Maine's largest city and the location of a seriously impressive crime spree straight out of Grand Theft Auto. Thomas Cassidy, 19, apparently went off the deep end and randomly began burgling and vandalizing and then starting cars on fire. He managed to get through ten cars in a little over two hours before police caught up to him by accident while canvasing for witnesses.

Veteran firefighters couldn't believe the speed with which Cassidy was able to start the blazes — faster than they were able to respond and put them out. The Portland Press Herald has a Google maps overlay of the path of destruction and the in-depth story, but we were shocked to find nary a reference to violent video games leading to the fall of western society. Hey, just as a word of caution, El-Wert-o may want to stay away from purple Jeep Cherokees in the Portland Maine area. photo credit to the Gregory Rec/Portland Press Herald

<![CDATA[ BMW 850CSi Vs Ferrari 456 GT ]]> Today's question comes to you straight from Alex Roy's loft in the NYC. Though Mr. Roy himself has no knowledge of it. No, the house-crashing intrepid Davey G Johnson done thunk this one up. We were having one of our usual DAF vs. FAF type dialogs over IM, only this time it was about the merits (and demerits) of a Citroen SM vs. an 850CSi. Davey pointed out that the SM was built off the DS platform, had the Maserati engine and fell to the earth from an advanced alien civilization. My counterpoint was that the 850 was effectively built out of raw chutzpa. "Fuck you. Here's our $100,000 supercar — and it looks like a Ford Probe. Eat it." Davey ceded that I had a point. But then he mentioned Ferrari's 456 (that also looks like a Ford Probe), a car that can take four humans up to a top speed of 187 mph. I had no comeback. Johnson = good. Each 90s ubermensch sports a rip-roarin' V12, a 6-speed manual and a 6-figure price. Also, as Davey pointed out, both cars came complete with all-important pop-up headlights. We're kinda torn. So we're leaving the decision up to you, O' sage readers.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: Alfa Romeo 159 GTA, For Real? ]]> alfa_156_gta_spy.jpgThe last time someone claimed spy shotage on the yet-unconfirmed Alfa Romeo 159 GTA, the subject looked more like a victim of Pep Boys abuse than a legitimate prototype. But new photos of a quad-exhaust 159 in telltale cladding were recently caught as it rounded the telltale Nürburgring. According to Australia's Drive.com.au, an Alfa insider confirmed the 159's platform could handle a V8. That makes the thought of a Ferrari-bred 4.3-liter screamer, over Alfa's Q4' all-wheel-drive system — which can direct 72 percent of power to the front wheels or 78 percent to the rear — that much more tantalizing. Some say Geneva '08 is where the GTA will appear first. We'll take our chances. [Thanks to Greg for the tip.]

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: Alfa GTA? ]]>

We've been waiting for the Alfa Romeo brand to return to the US for so long our Trapper Keeper is covered with four-leaf clover doodles (period joke, kids, just go with it). But if the blokes at Infomotori are correct, there's a GTA version of the 159 on the way. Like Carscoop, we've not heard anything resembling a confirmation on whether Alfa's building a 159 GTA. But that's not stopping the speculation machine, considering these shots indicate more air is needed somewhere in the engine compartment. Perhaps the rumor of a 4.2-liter Maserati V8 isn't far off.

Gasp. What's that under the hood of that Alfa Romeo 159 test mule? (Note to Forum Dell'Auto Italia, adjust your dosage; obsessive paranoia can be controlled.) Those are red cylinder heads, are they not? And we all know what that means: Ferrari or Maserati hardware. Eurocar Blog surmises that the red heads, along with quad exhausts in the rear, mean only one thing: A V8-powered Alfa 159 GTA is in the works. Both the 4.7-liter V8 of the Alfa 8C Competizione and 4.2-liter V8 of the Maserati Quattroporte are light enough to do the job in an all-wheel-drive 159 with a 65% torque bias to the rear. Oh my, this could be good.

[UPDATE: ECB has an enlargement of the engine, which apparently suggests itcould be a bi-turbo V6. Check it out after the jump. Oh well...]

<![CDATA[ The Alfa Romeo Brera GTA ]]> alfa_brera_gta_preso.jpg

Thanks to a cameraphone shot taken during a marketing presentation, Italiaspeed has come up with some details on the upcoming Alfa Romeo Brera GTA. The new Alfa will most definitely get lots of assistance from new corporate buddy, Maserati. In the Brera GTA's case, the 4.2-liter V8 that makes the Maserati line such sweet candy. That would give the coupe 440hp and torque of around 350-400 ft-lbs. Why are we excited? Because this (and its Spider sibling — to be introduced later this year in Bologna) will likely hit our shores approximately two years from now. And we'll be waiting on the beach with a pair of driving gloves and a Diet Pepsi.
