KITT's Turbo Boost Is Back For New Knight Rider Series

It's official — "Turbo Boost" is back for KITT. One of the biggest disappointments in the Knight Rider made-for-TV movie was the total lack of KITT's signature, once-per-show super-move — turbo-boost. After getting the green light for series production, the new Knight Rider series has already calmed our fears the super-speedy feature was overlooked. NBC's released this short promo clip with a very un-Kilmer like KITT saying "just wait until you see my turbo-boost." We will, oh Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR-bodied KITT, we will. 2008 Shelby GT500KR Hits The Dyno, Gets 50 More Horses Than Ford Claims

The ponycar fanboys at 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords took a Shelby GT500KR press car, strapped it down on a Dynapack chassis dyno, hit the gas and recorded a monster 509 HP and 467.7 lb-ft of torque. When you factor in driveline losses, that means the King of the Road is putting out 590 HP and 550 lb-ft. That's significantly more power at the flywheel than Ford is letting on to. More »

Ford Racing Invitational: Who Smoked Whom?

We took a run down to Milan Dragway for the Ford Racing Invitational — a Ford-sponsored event this past weekend pitting the automotive media against each other in a little bit of drag racing action. We had the chance to take some runs against the likes of Road & Track,5.0 Mustangs & Super Fords and Autoblog just to name a few. Although we had little in the way of expectations about our chances given our first-time status when it comes to straight-line racing, our chances seemed diminished even more after we got to the track and drew our set of keys from the pot of available Ford product to drag. The keys fit the ignition of a bright orange Ford Mustang GT Convertible with a tough Hurst shifter and a Whipple supercharger. Wonderful. But after a rainy Friday that saw little action, Saturday was clear and sunny: Perfect weather for racing. Also, for ass-kicking. More »

Buy A 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR Now For Just...$154,991!

At almost $80,000, the sticker price on the 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR was already on the high side of ridiculous, but we knew Ford would sell every one of these purported "King of the Road" 'stangs to pony car fan-boys. With that kind of demand, you'd expect to see a little bit of margin dropped on top of the already steep price by dealers looking to milk the fans dry, but little did we know to what extent. Until we saw the following EBay auction by a Houston, Texas dealership.

Unique Performance Assets Going Up For Auction, Again

Though Unique Performance the company may be dead, the drama lives on. At least until Doug Hasty goes to jail, if that's what ends up happening. We mentioned earlier that an auction of Unique Performance equipment netted more than a million dollars, which was unfortunately only enough to cover taxes and not screwed over employees. But wait, there's some hope. More items are going up for auction for a second round.

2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR, Reviewed

While we haven't had a chance to drive the new 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR, others have. Our friends at Popular Mechanics spent some time behind the wheel of the new Shelby GT500KR and have come away with some driving impressions of the purported "King of the Road." After reading their final take on the KR as well as those from other outlets, we're beginning to think maybe "Prince" might have been a better name for it. Unless of course "King" is being used to mean "King's Ransom" — then the naming convention makes sense given the stratospheric $80,000 price for a ridiculously high horsepower car with a solid axle and a propensity to only go in a straight line. While we'd never call this Mustang a "Sally" and we'll obviously stop short from saying the 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500KR sucks, we're pretty sure there's better cars you could probably buy for the money. But that's just our take on it. Check out the full review from the Mechanics who are quite Popular here:

KITT Shelby Mustang GT500KR Pair Sells For $300,000

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of KITT, it's back — at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach. We wonder if this means there won't be a full television series based on the movie after all. Yes, these were the actual cars used in the made-for-NBC movie. That means that these actually aren't even GT500KR models, but a pair of dressed-up Mustang GTs "inspired by the GT500KR." Though for the final bid of $300,000 for both the "Attack-Mode" and normal KITT, Ford included the rights to buy an actual GT500KR at MSRP. Just don't get too worked up about the wretched excess, because all the money is being written-off going to charity. [Barrett-Jackson]

Unique Performance Auction Nets More Than $1,000,000 Dollars, But That's Not Enough

Because Unique Performance declared bankruptcy and had debts outstanding, what was left in the UP warehouse was auctioned off this weekend. The hope was that, after the $900K went to the government there would be some left over for the 140 individuals with claims (including 40 employees owed back-pay). According to our source and records on the auction company's website, the auction netted approximately $1.037 million, leaving $137K after the IRS took their cut, which means $978 per person... before lawyers. KITT In Action: Exclusive Video

Yesterday, Ray and Wes met KITT in the flesh— er, metal. Today we bring you the video footage of us doing our best Hasslehoff impression during our exclusive Brooklyn rendezvous. The new Knight Rider made-for-television movie premieres tomorrow on NBC, so our test drive ride just came right at our peak of anticipation. And while we still kinda agree with the "never meet your childhood heros" rule, we've gotta admit that the supercharged Mustang GT in GT500KR clothing looks and sounds pretty sweet.

Exclusive: Jalopnik Lifts KITT's Hood

Ray and I got to live out a major childhood fantasy of ours earlier today when KITT swung by Brooklyn and offered to take us for a ride. KITT's found new life not as an F-body, but as a Ford Mustang GT500KR. Well, a more accurate description would be a Mustang GT with an automatic transmission — the cast can't drive stick — a supercharger and GT500KR bodywork. They do say, "Never meet your childhood heroes, you'll be disappointed." In this case, they're only partially right.

Knight Rider Rides Again On The Today Show, Now With Added Hasselhoff

KITT made an appearance on the Today Show this morning alongside costar Justin Bruening to promote the new Knight Rider TV Movie. During the show it was revealed that David Hasselhoff will be returning as Michael Knight. Bruening also revealed the loophole that allows the new version to pick up where the old left off, apparently, KITT's true inventor was never identified. Oh joy, what a plot twist.

New Knight Rider Commercial Airs, 30 More Seconds Of Less-Than-Exciting Action

Well, our good friends at Knight Rider Online have the scoop yet again on a new commercial for the new Mustang-ed up Knight Rider mini-series. The show'll be airing on the February 17th. The commercial? From what we understand, that aired last night on Conan O'Brien. The one new bit of info we're able to glean from the 30-seconds of 'stang-love is we get to see KITT's voice modulator for the first time. Oh yay. Want to see the other commercials? They're here, here and here and oh yes, here. We're going to get back to covering the Chicago Auto Show now. [via Knight Rider Online]

Barrett-Jackson: First 2008 Shelby GT500KR Goes For $550,000

The one-off glass-roofed 2008 Shelby GT500KR that's the first off the we showed you this past week, just went for a final sale price of $550,000 after bidding started at a mere $100,000. This despite a custom Fender Stratocaster with a pretty matte black case and all the money going to Edsel Ford's juvenile diabetes charity. We're a wee bit underwhelmed — despite Dr. McDreamy driving it up to the auction block. OK, we're kidding — nowe we're wondering what this bodes for the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 #01 that'll be hitting the auction block shortly as the Muscle Car Wars continue to heat up. Maybe if they'd offered it up with Will Arnett it might've made a bigger difference. Nah, probably not. Full BJ from BJ after the jump. Oh, and you want to know who bought it? That's right — Ron Pratte. That man loves Carroll Shelby.

Barrett-Jackson: Ford, Shelby to Auction One-Off Glass-Roof Shelby GT500KR on Saturday at the Big BJ

Looks like Ford's puckering up to take on every inch of the big BJ auction this weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona. Highlighting their car-love for the weekend will be their auction of a one-of-a-kind 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR with one of them new-fangled Mustang glass roods everyone's been talking about. We would like to thank Ford for claiming their rightful place in the lead of the "muscle car wars" — but we would like to remind them, as we reminded Dodge a month or so ago, that the use of our trademark and patent-pending term is exclusively prohibited. So pay up. We'll take cash, or a GT500KR of our own. Don't make us call our lawyers and get all cease-and-desist on your non-independent rear suspensions. Also, Pontiac may have something to say about headlining the press release with driving being in any way exciting. Full press release below the jump — including some love from Dr. McDreamy.

New Knight Rider Commercial: Like Us, KITT Hates Valet

We hate valet service. Nothing gives us more fear on earth than dropping off a vehicle — any vehicle — to some pimple-faced 17-year-old with a heavy left right foot and an inability to discern 2nd from reverse. Looks like the Mustang-derived KITT's got the same security issues we feel in this new commercial for the new Knight Rider movie/series/sequel dubbed "Valet." We just want to give the new GT500KR look-a-like a big hug and tell him everything's gonna be alright...don't cry...there, there.

Ford GT500KR Goes Into Production, Happy Birthday Carroll

What better way to celebrate the 85th birthday of Carroll Shelby, the man responsible for some of the best American muscle (and the Omni GLH), than with the production of the mean GT500KR? A King of the Road for a King of American Muscle. Works for me. 540 horsepower and 510 ft-lbs of torque for the first 79 years and a six-speed Tremec manual tranny for the last six. Only 1,000 of these sexy beasts will be available, so expect to pay a king's ransom for the privilege. Press release below the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: KITT Heading to Detroit to Play on Ford Stage

We're hearing among the "plethora" of official reveals from Ford at the Detroit Auto Show this weekend will be an additional piece of product pr0n to feast our eyes on — for the second time (we know you remember the first time our Gawker LA videographer Molly caught KITT. That's right, our sources tell us the GT500KR-like Mustang GT playing the role of KITT in the new Knight Rider movie/TV show/Mini-Series/whatevs will be on display for the media come Sunday morning. Now if only they'd fly Will Arnett out so we could hear it say "Mark Fields, jump in!" Yes, that'd be epic. Of course you too can follow along live at our Detroit Auto Show tag page, or if you're technically inclined, hit up the RSS feed for your fave feed reader — or just keep madly hitting refresh on our main page — whatever works best for you. Because that's what we're all about here — you. And cars. And sometimes, the Hoff.
