Nearly 18 years ago, Jeep invented the premium SUV segment with the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. More than 4 million sales later, Jeep improves the formula and hits the sweet spot of real-world capability and on-road refinement with the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers premium on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand's legendary four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand two-speed transfer case and unsurpassed towing capability. It also offers improved fuel economy (up to 11 percent) and a world-class interior cabin.

"We listened carefully to our customers and the market," said Scott Kunselman, Vice President – Jeep/Truck Product Team, Chrysler LLC. "Our all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee hits the sweet spot of premium on-road performance and legendary class-leading Jeep capability."

The all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability along with the new Selec-Terrain system that allows the driver to choose the drive system that best matches on- or off-road driving conditions. New front and rear independent suspension systems deliver premium on-road handling and comfort.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is built on a proven rear-wheel-drive unibody platform sharing the same underpinnings as the Mercedes-Benz ML.

"Jeep invented the SUV segment and our all-new Grand Cherokee is the next step in the evolution of the SUV," said Mike Accavitti, Director – Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge Brands. "Jeep innovations including Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction control separate us from the crowd."

Legendary Capability
The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

* Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
* Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.5 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.6 inches)
* Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 3 inches of height for 11.1 inches of ground clearance
* Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy ingress/egress. NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable giving the driver control over vehicle ride height
* Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle .6 inches from NRH. Aero Mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.5 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension, the all-new Selec-Terrain™ traction control system lets customers choose the off-road setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. This feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

The Selec-Terrain's control dial allows the driver to choose from five driving conditions in order to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains:

* Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque is tuned for optimal performance
* Sport: Provides enhanced on-road "fun-to-drive" capability
* Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation
* Snow: Vehicle traction and Quadra-Lift adjust for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads
* Rock: Quadra-Lift suspension raises to maximum height (11.1 inches) and the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

Selec-Terrain, coupled with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers legendary Trail Rated® performance.

With the front air dam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 35.9-degree approach angle, (compared to 32.3 on current model), a 29.2-degree departure angle (compared to 27.5 on current model) and 25.1-degree breakover angle (compared to 20.4 on current model).

The all-new independent front and rear suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles. Variable-rate rear springs deliver improved on-road handling and comfort that complements the vehicle's off-road capability. The new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath.

Go-Anywhere 4x4 Systems
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers three 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I®, Quadra-Trac II® and Quadra-Drive® II).

Quadra Trac I delivers full-time four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation over a variety of road conditions. This lightweight single-speed case is both proven and highly efficient for enhanced fuel economy.

Quadra Trac II's two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra Trac II and Quadra Drive II.

Jeep Trail Rated®
All 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with either the off-road or the Quadra-Lift group are Trail Rated®. The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee indicates that the vehicle has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Jeep Trail Rated is a unique methodology used by Jeep Engineering to measure and predict off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, Jeep Trail Rated provides a consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.

Powertrains
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with two leading engine options for North American markets.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's standard engine is an all-new flexible fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine is an all-new design featuring double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration. It features Variable-Valve Timing (VVT) and delivers 280 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 N•m) @ 4,800 rpm. This all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine improves fuel economy up to 11 percent compared to the previous Grand Cherokee equipped with a V-6. It is coupled with the proven W5A580, a five-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy. The five-speed W5A580 transmission includes adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and an electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's larger fuel tank, with a 24.6 gallon capacity, combined with the V-6 engine's improved fuel economy, delivers a range of approximately 500 miles on one tank of gas.

The available legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine delivers 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (520 N•m) @ 4,250 rpm. The HEMI also features VVT, which delivers performance and towing capability, as well as fuel efficiency with the fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS). The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is mated to the 545RFE multi-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers unsurpassed trailer tow capability of up to 7,400 lbs. on 4x2 models when equipped with the HEMI V-8 engine.

For international markets, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in left- and right-hand drive with either diesel or petrol powertrains.

World-class Interior Refinement
The all-new interior is elevated to that of its European competition and features rich materials and elegant appointments, as well as more room for both passengers and cargo.

"Following in the footsteps of our all-new 2009 Dodge Ram, our all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is another proud graduate of our Advanced Interior Design Studio," said Ralph Gilles, Vice President – Design. "We achieved a world-class interior by using fine materials and maintaining a laser-attention to details."

An available all-new CommandView® dual-pane sun roof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sun roof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. The front panel may be opened rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers and comes standard with a power sun shade.

Right-sized Packaging
The vehicle's 114.8-inch wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than the model it replaces and contributes to an overall vehicle length that is 1.8 inches longer than the prior model. The longer wheelbase creates more interior room and gives passengers an additional 4 inches of rear-seat knee and leg room. The vehicle also is 3 inches wider for improved handling and packaging.

Larger front door openings (1.9 inches wider; 2 inches higher) and rear doors open 78 degrees compared to current models (67 degrees) for better access to the interior.

Inside, premium seating includes room for five passengers. An available fold-flat front-passenger seat provides improved cargo storage room (Laredo models).

For added passenger comfort, rear seats recline 12 degrees. There also is a 12-degree forward angle to allow 24 degrees of variation.

Cargo volume behind the second-row provides an additional 6.8 cubic feet of room (36.3 cubic feet total) compared to the previous model. The well-appointed rear cargo area includes a storage unit with a rechargeable flashlight and new and improved grocery hooks on both sides. The spare tire compartment includes removable dual storage bins for secure storage of muddy gear or other items.

An all-new power rear liftgate is available for effortless remote up/down convenience.

Classic Exterior Design
Every surface of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is new and treated for aerodynamics. This improves fuel efficiency and puts more fluidity into the design while delivering a 7- percent improvement in drag compared with the current model. The all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee Cd is approximately 0.37 compared with the 2009 Cd of 0.404.

"Our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is much more refined, focused and sportier than the model it replaces," said Gilles. "It has classic Jeep Grand Cherokee styling with sculpted athletic exterior refinements for 2011."

The front includes Jeep's classic seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches. The removable lower front fascia delivers improved fuel economy, on-road performance and off-road capability. The lower front fascia features a large chromed appliqué (Limited and Overland models) that showcases available tow hooks.

From the side, Jeep Grand Cherokee features an athletic, muscular profile. Black appliqués on B-pillars give the day-light opening (DLO) an aerodynamic, modern appearance and a sleek profile. Available chromed mirrors and door handles add to the profile and complement the full-chromed DLO surround on all models.

Seventeen-inch wheels are standard and deliver off-road capability, with optional 18-inch and all-new to Jeep, 20-inch wheels for 2011.

Taillamps wrap from the rear quarter panel to the back of the vehicle and create a solid form which achieves more of an upscale appearance. The treatment complements the front-end design and resonates with the rest of the exterior.

Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with a HEMI V-8 engine have 3.5-inch dual chromed exhaust tips, and those with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine have a 3-inch single exhaust.

Premium Performance
Continuing to build on the Jeep brand's legendary off-road capability, the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee adds premium on-road performance to complete the package.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's premium SUV on-road manners and legendary Jeep ruggedness is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone. Torsional stiffness is 146 percent more than the current Grand Cherokee and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander for improved durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

With more than 3,700 mm of arc welding and 100 m of structural adhesive to augment welding, this marks a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive.

More than 45 Safety and Security Features
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes more than 45 safety and security features.

Standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection, four-wheel Brake Traction Control System (BTCS), Passive Entry/Keyless Go, Remote keyless entry, express up/down windows for driver and front-seat passenger, seat-belt pretensioners, Trailer-Sway Control and Remote-Start which is standard on Overland and available on Limited.

Other standard safety features include full-length side-curtain air bags which extend protection to front and rear outboard passengers, seat-mounted side thorax air bags that enhance protection for the driver and front passenger and active head restraints which deploy in the event of a rear collision.

The body structure is all new and designed to achieve expected safety performance in global markets (new roof-crush standards, side-impact standards and Euro pedestrian impact).

<![CDATA[2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Good Looking, But Is It Enough?]]> Chrysler showed us the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee in person last week and frankly, we're impressed. It's the most attractive Chrysler interior and exterior we've seen in a while. But is that enough?

The next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee's built on the same rear-wheel-drive unibody platform underpinning the new Mercedes-Benz ML. It's one of the few things Chrysler got out of its ill-fated "merger of equals" with the German automaker. There's also a new Quadra Lift air suspension system that provides height control and lifts the new Grand Cherokee up 4.5" from park mode to a maximum ride height of 11.1" for better off-road capability. There's also a select-trac system with four separate 4x4 systems, each set up for different driver needs. But of all that, the chassis's about the only thing they get from Mercedes.

It's at this point in a preview piece on a Chrysler vehicle where we'd attack the rest of the vehicle for being a complete waste of time. It's not. The exterior body of the new Grand Cherokee gets an all-new sculpted body that helps give the new Grand Cherokee an athletic profile despite the increase in size and weight. It looks good in photos. In person it looks, and most importantly, feels, fantastic.

The interior's all-new too. And by all-new, we mean it looks like what we expect a luxury SUV to look like. That's good, because it'll need it to go up against competitors like the new Cadillac SRX and new Lexus RX. It may actually succeed, mostly because it's not just about the looks, there's also engineering changes that come from listening to current-generation owners — things like more than 4" of extra rear-seat knee and leg room (38.6") compared to the previous model allowing it to get reclining second-row seats.

The problem is still the fuel economy. That's not to say it's not good — for a Jeep. It is. In addition to the base model flex-fuel 3.6-liter V6 with an estimated 280 HP, the new Grand Cherokee gets the available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 generating 360 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm – features VVT and despite features like VVT and fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) technology, we're still talking about fuel economy in the 16/23 (FWD) and 16/22 (AWD). The HEMI gets 14/20 (2WD) and 13/19 (4WD). Good for an SUV. Unfortunately, will it be enough for a Chrysler lineup that currently doesn't have any vehicles with over 31 MPG? We'd have to say no. But for the Jeep brand, this is a hell of a top-of-the-line for the lineup. We approve. We'll have more including live shots later.

The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee indicates that the vehicle has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging
off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Powertrains
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with two leading engine options
for North American markets.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's standard engine is an all-new flexible fuel 3.6-liter V-6 engine. This all-new V-6 engine improves fuel economy up to 11 percent compared to the previous Grand Cherokee equipped with a V-6.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers unsurpassed trailer tow capability of up
to 7,400 lbs. on 4x2 models when equipped with the HEMI V-8 engine.

For international markets, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available
in left- and right-hand drive with either diesel or petrol powertrains.

The front panel can be opened rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers.

An available fold-flat
front-passenger seat provides improved cargo storage room (Laredo models).

"It has classic Jeep Grand Cherokee styling
with sculpted athletic exterior refinements for 2011."

Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with a HEMI V-8 engine have 3.5-inch dual chromed exhaust tips, and those with the V-6 engine have a 3-inch single exhaust.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes more than 45 safety and
security features.

The body structure is all new and designed to achieve expected safety performance
in global markets (new roof-crush standards, side-impact standards and Euro
pedestrian impact).

Connectivity and Infotainment Features
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will feature uconnect guardian as a standard feature on all models (services provided by Hughes Telematics).

uconnect guardian provides customers with the top five requested security features. uconnect guardian customers can access the following:

• Automatic Crash Notification – In the event of an accident, a call is placed and a request for assistance is dispatched to the vehicle's location
• Emergency Call – With a push of the emergency button, customers are placed in contact with a trained emergency response specialist during an emergency situation
• Roadside Assistance Call – Connects customers to a uconnect customer care specialist who can connect them to Chrysler's road-side assistance for towing or jump starts
• Remote Door Unlock – Remotely unlocks doors with a simple phone call
• Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance – Works with local authorities via on-demand tracking to provide the current location of the vehicle if it is stolen

Manufacturing

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built at the 2.7-million-square-foot Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit, which has been the site of Grand Cherokee production since its introduction in 1992.

In preparation for production of the all-new Grand Cherokee, Jefferson North Assembly is undergoing a 285,000-square-foot expansion to replace the existing body shop, which is part of Chrysler's investment of approximately $1.8 billion in new vehicle programs. In addition, changes throughout paint and assembly operations will give the facility an all-new level of manufacturing flexibility for multiple product capability.

JNAP was built in 1991 and was expanded in 1999.

Jeep Brand
Staying true to its values and character, the Jeep® brand is purpose-built for adventurous lifestyles. With 68 years of legendary 4x4 capability, the Jeep brand continues to fulfill promises of adventure, liberation and independence for those who embrace life, whether traveling on- or off-road. The ruggedness and responsiveness of Jeep vehicles provide owners with a sense of security to handle any situation with confidence.

For 2009, the brand's legendary Go Anywhere, Do Anything™ heritage is maintained with the addition of more interior refinement, comfort and technology in the widest range of sport-utility vehicles under one brand. The Jeep product line includes the brand icon, the Jeep Wrangler; the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited; the popular mid-size Jeep Liberty (Cherokee outside North America); the venerable Jeep Grand Cherokee; the seven-passenger Jeep Commander; and the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass with
all-new redesigned interiors and fuel economy of 28 mpg.

<![CDATA[Chrysler Reveals Product Future To Journalists, We Reveal Plans To You]]> Thanks to not being invited to today's secret Chrysler future product event, we're not covered by any embargoes. Good. Because that means we're able to tell you all about Chrysler's future product plans...today! Yay!

Don't call it a death rattle because it's obviously too early for that, however this product plan Chrysler unveiled today was termed by some as smoke and mirrors and others as "lipstick on a foam pig" — especially if they're unable to land the billions in funding right-quick.

Be that as it may, this is what we've learned so far from a handful of journalists in attendance (Remember to thank Chrysler PR man Rick Deneau for all this information! It's his continually shortsighted approach to the internet and a lack of desire to reach out to our readership — by specifically excluding us and Autoblog from embargo access — that made this post possible. Give Rick a big hand folks!):

Detroit Auto Show:
There's a new conceptual member of the smoke & mirrors EV family to be revealed at Detroit, the second Jeep in the bunch — a Jeep Patriot EV!

Chicago Auto Show:
Expect to see the next generation of the chassis cab trucks Americans want to buy but Congress doesn't want Chrysler to make.

New York Auto Show:
For some reason the NY show's been all about the Jeeps. This year's no different, with the Pentastar brand showing off an all-new 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, complete with a 7,700 lb tow rating, an aluminum front axle and low-rolling-resistance tires. Just what every Jeep buyer ever wanted — fiction and uselessness rolled into one package (though we do hear the exterior looks pretty darn good)!

Da Future!
• Journalists were also shown a set of all-new and refreshed RWD sedans — a 2011 Chrysler 300 and 2011 Dodge Charger. The Charger was supposedly showing off design cues from the late 60s ( can someone say Challenger-like? ). Both will get all-new interiors (shown off later in the interior design studio with five other interior mock-ups). Everyone who saw the mock-ups of the exteriors said they looked "very retro" and "very cool."
• A new Dodge Durango was shown made out of foam with what was termed as a "horrible paint job" (Covered in dinoc film perhaps?).
• Some kind of new and cool internet feature allowing for everything from streaming internet access to streaming internet radio, and you can tag songs and download it later (maybe through iTunes?) and all of it on a cool tablet PC that will let you use maps and stuff. The best part? It may even let you go to shady sites like Jalopnik (unless Ricky D's got anything to say about it)!

<![CDATA[Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 May Get Towing Package]]> Based on spy photos the Detroit News appears to have received from a reader, Jeep's hot-rod mid-size SUV may soon be able to pull your boat. According to their report, the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 has been spotted with the dual center-mounted exhaust outlets moved to one-per-side, and the test mule was seen pulling a trailer. Jeep hasn't revealed any power numbers for the next Jeep SRT8, but we have to believe they should at least match the current Grand Cherokee SRT8's 425 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque. Last time we looked that was plenty of pulling power for most suburban enthusiasts. [Detroit News]

<![CDATA[Jalopnik Visits Hennessey Performance: The Weak Dollar Leads To Some Crazy Cars]]> During our Hennessey Performance HQ tour there were three vehicles that caught our eye, all non-Vipers and all for foreign customers. The first was a Grand Cherokee that I mistakenly took to be Hennesey's personal Grand Cherokee SRT600, but it had Mexican plates. It turns out the owner wanted his Cherokee to be able to run the quarter mile in the 10-second range. They tried explaining that it'll easily run low 12's and that the cost to get it to run 10's was rather high, but he insisted. So what you see in the pictures may be the world's only 10-second Grand Cherokee, possibly designed to dodge Federales. The Prowlers, well that's an even stranger story...

There were just a pair of Prowlers hanging out around the shop, but the total order is for six of the Chrysler hot rods. Why? The Russians love the Prowler and an unnamed Russian supermarket magnate needs a fleet of them, which the Hennessey crew began looking for on eBay. Three of the six are getting supercharged and all of them will be fitted with chrome. Lots of chrome. The front ends, grilles, accent pieces, belly pans, wheels and exhaust are all getting the chrome treatment.

The shop was actually quite stacked with cars wearing foreign plates. The reason? With the weaker dollar it's like their foreign customers suddenly got a 50% discount.

<![CDATA[Mexican Police Nab James Bond-Style Jeep Grand Cherokee]]> In a daring bit of cartel violence, drug runners in northern Mexico smashed into a military vehicle, jumped out, lobbed a grenade and then made their escape on foot. Daring! Audacious! But it's what they left behind that's really insane.

It was a Jeep Grand Cherokee outfitted with the goods to put up a smoke screen and deploy spikes in the event of a chase. Part of us thinks this is really cool, and wonders if there were also missile launchers behind the headlights, an ejector seat, and hidden machine gun turrets. But on the other hand, such weaponry would be directed at Federales, and that's not cool. It's worth noting that AMC Jeeps were originally equipped with a smoke screen/oil slick machine, but that was mounted under the hood, called "the engine." [BBC Online]

<![CDATA[Essen Motor Show: The Delta DUNE Project]]> The Deutschland 4x4 tuners at delta4x4 have taken on the Jeep Grand Cherokee for the Essen Motor Show, building out the big Jeep mainstay into the Delta DUNE Project, a 499 horsepower desert racer. With a 0-60 time of less than five seconds, Delta's taken the SRT8 to a whole new level. On the exterior, the DUNE has been lifted by just under four inches, but given a wedge shape with the new front spoiler lowering the clearance by about two inches, and it's riding on custom 23 inch Elements IV wheels. And we mustn't forget the spice-colored coating, for yes, it is the Kwisatz Haderach. Full press release after the jump.

The DUNE Project premieres at the Essen Motor Show 2007

* In less than five seconds from 0 to 100 km/h - no problem for the 499 hp desert racer

The next desert silver bullet is the delta4x4 DUNE PROJECT, based on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. delta4x4 the Bavarian specialist for SUVs maximizes the powerof this striking SUV from 425 hp to 499 hp.

The high performance 4x4 reaches 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds. The harmonic interaction between the specially developed motor-management and a perfectly built sport exhaust system with performance manifold. Combined with the sport cat and modified air feed, add up to even more power gain. The stainless steel exhaust tailpipe completes the jaw-dropping unique look.

Due to the individualized front spoiler (-50 mm), a cool body lift kit (+100 mm) and the custom light wheel Elements IV with 11x23in mounted Continental Cross Contact tires in 305/40 R23, the DUNE PROJECT is allowed to stretch its legs, flex its muscles and demonstrate its athletic skills.

Beautifully intregrated into the front spoiler is the Warn winch, in the unlikey event that this will be needed its good to know you can rely on the best.

delta4x4 presents a brilliant lighting system for its desert racer. The stainless steel roof-rack system and the fender extension contain filigree PIAA main-beam headlights which guarantee absolute visibility on nighttime trips in the dunes.

The DUNE project is covered with a specially painted foil in a hip maroon matt-finish prepared to deal with and protect in extreme conditions.

<![CDATA[Prominent SUVs Fair Poorly In Side Impact Tests]]>
Best not to slide sideways down a snowy bank into a Douglas-fir next time you're out romping in the Grand Cherokee, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. As the clip above from Good Morning America shows, new models of the Jeep, Chevy Trailblazer and both the Nissan Pathfinder and Xterra faired poorly in 31 mph side-impact tests. Interestingly, when equipped with optional side air bags, both Nissan models received top marks, as did the Toyota 4Runner. In other news, water is wet.

Why you should buy this car:
Because you want an SUV that packs over 400 horsepower, runs a low 13-second quarter mile, handles like a slot car, and goes 0-60 in under five seconds. Because you like the idea of a vehicle assembled in Detroit, USA and Graz, Austria - next town over from Thal, where California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was born.

Why you should not buy this car:
Because you are one of the few people that actually uses the towing, hauling, or off-road capability of an SUV.

<![CDATA[Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Part 2]]> Exterior Design: ****

The SRT crew took a Grand Cherokee and meaned it up track style. The result is a low-slung brick fronted by a giant front air dam. Center exit dual exhaust on the other end puts a stop to any ridiculous ideas about towing. Why even pretend the thing is going to go off-road or tow a boat? The utility in this monster is apparent once you stuff it into a corner and hit the throttle. The exterior design is a case of form following modified function.

Interior Design: ***

Bolstered leather SRT seats are an early visual giveaway that this thing is not your standard four-wheel cell phone transport unit. The acres of gray punctuated by sliver accents and a few strategically placed SRT logos aren't going to win any international design awards, but add some sport to utility. Gazing around at interior bits isn't what this thing was built for. Looking out the front window at the unfolding road ahead is the key interior design feature.

Acceleration: *****

Great Caesars Ghost! This monster packs a very large displacement V8 prepared for maximum output by SRT. Instant off idle torque is there on command. Sixty foot times at the dragstrip are right up there with any sixties musclecar. Jeep says 0-60 comes in under five seconds. The quarter-mile take a few tenths over 13 seconds.

Braking *****

A fat set of Brembos with antilock capability and brake assist will lock you up against the seat belt as they scrub inertia off this near 5000-pound machine. Brake city, and you're the Mayor.

Ride ***

Getting a 4,819-pound brick to handle like a slot car requires some sacrifice from the smooth ride department. Up front the ride is performance biased. Back seat travel can be a bit choppy.

Handling *****

Is this thing really an SUV? Bilstein dampers along with fat front and rear sway bars help the Jeep defy perceptions of what an SUV is supposed to do. Full time all wheel drive puts corners quickly into the past with ease.

Gearbox *****

Five-speed automatic is fronted by a slightly loose torque converter. This gives the 6.1 Liters of Hemi a few more RPM before it unleashes the power into the clutches. After that everything is a miracle of modern engineering and an amusement park ride quality demonstration of the forces of gravity.

Audio/Video ****

The test vehicle was equipped with a 6CD-MP3 changer and SIRIUS Satellite Digital Radio and Boston Acoustics Premium Sound system. AC DC never sounded better then when traffic finally cleared up on I-15 heading out of Vegas.

Value ***

Dollar for dollar the SRT8 Grand Cherokee is a performance bargain. Its nearest competitors may feature forced induction or a perceived level of refinement, but the SRT8 gets the job done for much less. Think 20K less.

Toys ***

The tester was chock-a-block with toys as part of the Customer Preferred Package 29L. Given some more time I actually could have figured out how to fully employ the nav system, Uconnect Hands Free Communication, Park Sense Park Assist, Remote Start System, and Power Adjustable Pedals! The back up cam system was tested, and it was pretty bitchen.

Trunk ****

Being an SUV the trunk was more than adequate. That being said, this thing was not designed for carrying 4X8 sheets of plywood or bags of peat moss for planting begonias.

Overall ****

In a lot of ways this thing embodies what most people really buy an SUV for. V8 power and torque along a feeling of taller superiority over lower and smaller vehicles. Sure it doesn't make any sense, but it's a whole lot of fun without the hubris of its more expensive equivalents. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 demands admiration for what it does, and it does it very well.

<![CDATA[Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Part 1]]> Legend has it Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky, father of the modern helicopter, had a sign made up for display in the lobby of his company's technical office. The sign said this:

"The bumblebee, according to our engineers' calculations, cannot fly at all, but the bumblebee does not know this and flies".
After a few days behind the wheel I got to wondering if the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 doesn't know it's not supposed to fly either.

IMG_0004.jpgDisbelief alternating with elation are the two main emotions after just a few seconds behind the wheel of this beast. The 6.1 liters of Hemi power eventually becomes familiar, but the 420 horses and 420 pounds of torque never cease to entertain. Flooring it, I wonder why they didn't just call it Super Cherokee. This thing will out-sixty-foot any '60s or '70s muscle car, and give Porsche Cayenne displacement envy. Low 13-second quarter miles? No problem. Even so, the big boy is docile as long as one keeps his foot out of the loud pedal. Push that same foot inward, and a sweet soundtrack from the exhaust joins Atlas-rocket acceleration.

IMG_0037.jpgWhen treading only lightly at the perceived limits of this machine, straight line elation turns to disbelief. Giant Brembos at all four corners make impossible corner-entry speeds easy to modulate. Velocity adjustment is quickly followed by equally improbable readjustment and acceleration out of the apex thanks to scads of instant V8 torque and an all-wheel drive system unique to the vehicle itself. The system has been beefed to handle the massive twist the Hemi creates. I got the impression the Super Cherokee would truly shine on a high-speed road course like Willow Springs. In fact, the SRT8 comes with a track-day experience as standard equipment.

IMG_0066.jpgI only enjoyed a few days' driving in the Super Cherokee — which is admittedly on the high side of its product life span — but I wanted more. Given a few hours behind the wheel it's easy to forget the Super Cherokee is anything but a performance machine. A few weeks, and I may have completely forgotten I was driving an SUV. After a day or two the only way to remember you're driving a stonking 4800-and-change pound SUV is when you get out of it to tank up. Even after a few double-takes at the beast, the reality just doesn't register. It's sort of a vehicular fun-house-mirror effect. I had more than few opportunities to observe this hocus focus at work. My inner voice kept asking me if the vehicle I was looking at was in fact the same one I just took through that corner.

IMG_9812.jpgWhile driving around solo in the beast is fun, sharing the capabilities of the SRT8 Grand Cherokee is much more rewarding. Riding around in Las Vegas with some of the folks behind the production of the vehicle, I began to truly understand the effort that went into the suspension to make a large beastie such as this handle like a slot car. This is a vehicle designed to make you want to drive it like a racecar. While in Las Vegas we had the honor of riding with Diane Sox, wife of the late and great Ronnie Sox. While I was cornering up onto the interstate, she exclaimed, "this reminds me of the way Ronnie used to drive"! Mr. Four Speed evidently liked to drive off the drag strip as much as on.

IMG_9759.jpgSRT stands for Street and Racing Technology. The team puts their collective brain trust into otherwise ordinary rides and makes them extraordinary, and this is the kind of thing we just have to encourage. Behind the wheel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 one ponders that perhaps the SRT crew had the same sign as Sikorsky did hanging in the development center when they hatched this beast. I don't know if the legendary sign at Sikorsky had a cartoon bee on it, but I'd like to think the sign at SRT would display a '68 Superbee as inspiration for the modern muscle infused into the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

<![CDATA[New York Auto Show Preview: 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee]]> If it's the New York Auto Show, it must be time for new Jeeps. For some odd reason the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid has found New York's the place to show off their new rock-crawlers — last year showing off the new Jeep Patriot and the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This year the boys n' girls from Stuttgart Auburn Hills have so far unveiled the new 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. And let's just say — it's amazingly similar to the old one. Except for like, one big difference. This year, the GC is going diesel and it's going low-end on the V8. That's right, the news on the Grand is the addition of the 3.0-liter common rail diesel V6 engine available on the Limited and the Overland and the addition of an all-new 4.7-literV8 engine which becomes the new standard on the Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. We're just happy to hear the SRT8 still gets the 6.1-liter HEMI. Everything else is really just butter. Full press release after the jump.

New York City, April 4, 2007 - The Jeep brand unveiled today the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee that features an all-new 4.7-liter V-8 engine that delivers a 24 percent increase in horsepower, a 6 percent increase in torque and improved fuel economy compared with the engine it replaces. The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee also offers a refreshed interior and exterior design and a host of innovative premium amenities, including one not found on other full-size sport-utility vehicles (SUV) on the road today — SIRIUS Backseat TV . The vehicle will arrive at Jeep dealerships starting this fall.

"With a choice of five engines, three four-wheel-drive systems and more premium amenities than ever before, the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee sets the benchmark for full-size SUVs just as it did when it debuted in 1992," said John Plecha, Director — Jeep Brand Marketing and Global Communications. "Now available with SIRIUS Backseat TV, the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee just made road trips or short trips with kids even more enjoyable."

Only Full-Size SUV with Five Engine Offerings
The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the only vehicle with a choice of five engine offerings:
Award-winning 3.0-liter common rail diesel V-6 engine - Now available on Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and Overland
3.7-liter V-6 engine - Standard on Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
All-new 4.7-liter V-8 engine - Standard on Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine - Available on Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, standard on Overland
6.1-liter HEMI V-8 engine - Standard on Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

All-new for 2008 is the 4.7-liter V-8 engine that offers better fuel economy, power and torque than the previous 4.7-liter engine, while at the same time delivering improvements in refinement.

The new 4.7-liter V-8 incorporates two spark plugs per cylinder (the only Chrysler Group engine to do so, other than the 5.7-liter HEMI), increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system. The result is 291 horsepower (217kW), a 24 percent increase, and 322 lb.-ft. of torque (437 N m), a 6 percent increase over the previous 4.7-liter V-8 engine. And, like the engine it replaces, the new 4.7-liter V-8 engine is flex-fuel capable, which gives customers the ability to use up to an 85 percent concentration of ethanol (E85) to fuel their vehicles.

Improvements in the new 4.7-liter V-8 result from significant revisions to the induction system, a lightweight piston/rod assembly and reduced accessory drive noise through lower accessory drive speed. Engine smoothness at idle is enhanced with a new cam design, two spark plugs per cylinder and a valve-lash adjuster system. The new 4.7-liter V-8 also is equipped with electronic throttle control.

First to Offer All-new SIRIUS Backseat TV
The Chrysler Group will be the first and only auto manufacturer to offer SIRIUS Backseat TV in its 2008 model year vehicle lineup, including the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

SIRIUS Backseat TV features three channels of respected children's TV featuring many of the most well-known kids' programming, including Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. Rear-seat passengers will be able to watch shows such as Nickelodeon's "SpongeBob SquarePants," Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" and Cartoon Network's "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends."

SIRIUS Backseat TV operates via an in-vehicle satellite video receiver and two small roof-mounted antennas. Programming is displayed on the vehicle's second-row (except minivan: second- and/or third-row) video screen, and channel name, program title and rating will be broadcast and displayed on the screen. For added flexibility, rear-seat passengers can enjoy SIRIUS Backseat TV while front-seat occupants listen to SIRIUS Satellite Radio. The system can be operated from either the rear-seat entertainment unit or the radio head unit. In addition, when the vehicle is in park, programming can be displayed on the MyGIG screen for front-seat viewing.

Innovative Premium Amenities
Along with SIRIUS Backseat TV, the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes a variety of premium amenities that are new for 2008, including the new MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System that has a built-in navigation, audio, entertainment and communication system. MyGIG enables customers to use touch-screen or voice commands to control all of the features, and includes a 20-gigabyte hard drive where music and photos can be stored. There's space reserved on the hard drive for approximately 1,600 songs; that's over 100 hours of music. There also is a voice-memo recorder feature. MyGIG supports real-time traffic information, available through SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and can provide an alternate drive route based on current traffic.

Also new on the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee are high-intensity discharge (HID) auto-leveling headlamps. HID auto-leveling headlamps provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination. The auto-leveling feature automatically adjusts the headlamps to the vehicle pitch depending on the load and number of passengers in the vehicle. This feature also benefits oncoming traffic as the system prevents drivers from being distracted by glare from the headlamps. The auto-leveling feature is only available with HID headlamps.

ParkView Rear Back-up Camera (with or without navigation), ParkSense Rear Back-up System, SmartBeam headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, memory seats and mirrors, iPod connectivity and 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels also are part of the vehicle's available features and options.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee also features three new safety and security technologies for 2008: Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) is standard on Grand Cherokee 4x4 models. Operational in the "4WD Low" position, HDC provides downhill assistance at a controlled rate of speed. By means of electronic brake control, HDC supplements the gear reduction and engine braking that a traditional mechanical low-range transfer case provides. For ease of operation, Grand Cherokee's HDC is activated and deactivated automatically, after the HDC button is engaged, as the system senses changes in topography. The system works whether the vehicle is in forward or reverse.

The available Hill Start Assist (HSA) allows the driver time to transition from brake to throttle to achieve a smooth launch on a grade. The system will hold brake pressure for two seconds upon the driver's release of the brake pedal. The ABS system decreases wheel pressure in response to increasing throttle to provide a smooth launch.

Trailer Sway Control is optional on all Grand Cherokee models. This system reduces trailer sway and provides improved trailer stability and increased towing safety.

Refreshed Exterior and Interior
With its upright and substantial posture, the Jeep Grand Cherokee's design offers an athletic and contemporary appearance. The grille has been lengthened, and the headlamps are more circular for a more dominant and expressive front view. A new HID headlamp, optional on Limited and standard on Overland, includes an internal optic lens for the park/turn function. Fog lamps also have also been lowered for enhanced performance. Off-road enthusiasts will be pleased with the new two-piece front fascia, allowing for the entire lower piece to be removed before hitting the off-road trails.

On the inside, the vehicle's two-tone instrument panel features a new level of refinement with bright accents, a soft-touch surface and updated styling. A new tilt and telescoping steering column is standard, with a new steering wheel that includes bright accent bezels, which house the electronic vehicle information center's switches. The Limited model's steering wheel adds two-tone leather and bright chrome accent rings, and the Overland features a real wood rim for added luxury. Also new is the updated line of instrument clusters that feature new brighter LED illumination, with the Limited and Overland models receiving a modern and elegant treatment where, when the vehicle is started, the dark-tinted lens fades to reveal chrome-ringed black gauges that are surrounded by a bright silver accent field. The new floor console has improved cup holders and a new leather-wrapped and chrome-accented parking brake handle. The door panels have new armrests for improved ergonomics and comfort. New for the Overland model are the new saddle perforated leather seats that feature accent piping for an even more upscale look.

Jeep Brand
The Jeep brand has seven models in the 2007 model year, the most available to retail consumers at one time in its 65-year-plus history.

The expansion of the Jeep brand has taken place in just two years. At the start of 2004, the brand's trio of tough, capable, rugged SUVs included the venerable Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty (Cherokee outside North America) and the icon of the brand, the Jeep Wrangler.

In 2005, the Jeep Commander was introduced. In 2006, the redesigned Jeep Wrangler was unveiled. Also debuting in 2006 were three more all-new Jeep vehicles: Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass and the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

<![CDATA[C/D Drinks Up All the Hennessey John's Got On His Shelf: Grand Cherokee SRT600]]>

The Grand Cherokee SRT8 is already somewhat of a sleeper. Certainly, those in the know recognize its prodigious performance. But what happens when one sends one's Jeep off to Hennessey for a 27k tune-up? Epic soccer-mom-look hoonage available at a stab of the loud pedal to the tune of 620hp and 650 turbocharged torques. Car and Driver recently took one out for a spin, and the boys from Ann Arbor point out that it's quicker than practically anything one can buy for the price, hammering not only its ber-ute bretheren, but such warp-velocity steeds as the Lamborghini Gallardo; it's only off the much-lighter Z06's quarter-mile time by half a second. What's more, optioned judiciously, the beastie comes in under 70 large.

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD]]>

What's this familiar SUV spotted way the hell up in northern Scandinavia, near the Norwegian border? According to those familiar three letters, it's the Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the CRD Diesel engine. That's the Benz-built 3.0-liter diesel, producing 215 hp and 376 lb.-ft. torque. Chrysler announced last month the current CRD-powered model will have an MSRP of $38,475. According to spies, some bumper tweaks and seven-spoke wheels indicate this is the 2008 model, which will get a minor facelift over the current Grand Cherokee. Let's just hope they're not using the oil burner to smoke salmon for export.

<![CDATA[Braking! Chrysler Group Looks For Do-Over On 2007 Model Year, Recalls 62,369 Vehicles]]> Oops. Hope you weren't planning on using those brakes in your new '07 model Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep-branded — umm — anything. We've just heard the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's recalling 62,369 vehicles for what Reuters says is a need to "reprogram a computer that is related to the brake system." And it's a lot of models affected: the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV's. Hmm. Maybe we should have stuck with just telling you the vehicles the Chrysler Group's not recalling.

<![CDATA["I'm A Dirty Dog!": Wert Hits Chelsea's Off-Road Track]]>

Tho' the famed Chelsea Hotel where Sid Vicious did a deadly number to Nancy Spungen is not located in Chelsea, MI — at the very least it gives us the opportunity to drop a reference to The Pistols...just like we dropped this HEMI-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee into 4-Wheel. We went and got it a bit dirty out at Chrysler's Proving Grounds after the Sebring reveal this morning. Luckily, no one died this time in Chelsea — and although the boys from Dubspeed Driven feel pretty good — the Jeep and Wert's sore head sure don't.

<![CDATA[Jeep Cherokee to Get Diesel, Stink up Joint]]>

We knew it would happen (seriously, we did know). Jeep announced today it will offer its Grand Cherokee in delicious diesel flavor. In fact, it'll be Mercedes-Benz's 3.0-liter CRD (common-rail) turbodiesel burner the Europeans have been privy to that will power the SUV in the US. The Chrysler kids are talking about a 30% increase in fuel economy (over the deepest-sipping V8) from the mill, which produces 215 hp at 3800 rpm and 376 lb.-ft. torque waaay lowdown in the 1600-2800 rpm range — with estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city / 23 mpg highway. It'll be available on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, Limited and Overland models. Speaking of Europeans, one of these little numbers blew by us on the autostrada in Italy last month — notwithstanding that such a pedal-down maneuver probably cost him about five bucks in fuel. Still, we're totally ready for diesels over here.
