Forza Motorsport 3: The Cars]]> The biggest automotive showdown this year: Forza versus Gran Turismo. Since GT5 will, like, never come out, we've decided to pit the car list from Forza Motorsport 3 against the only other suitable alternative — Gran Turismo for PSP.

Click "next" to see the full comparison between the lists so you can decide which garage full of digital cars you'll want.

Quantity

Advantage: GT for PSP
Reason: GT for PSP has almost double the number of cars as Forza 3, which is an advantage that's hard to ignore consider it's hand-held against big-box. On the other hand, how many versions of the VW Lupo does one person want or need? It's not just about quantity, it's quality, so click through to see how the two face off in important categories.

American Cars

Advantage: Forza 3
Reason: Both games include must-haves like the Buick GNX and Ford GT, but Forza 3 has a special Motorsports Legends Car Pack with the 1969 Dodge Charger, 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and 1960 Chevrolet Corvette. And even if it didn't, choices for classic American cars like the Ford Mustang are limited to the 2005 GT and 2000 Cobra R according to the GT for PSP list. By comparison, Forza has those cars plus the 1970 Boss 429, 1993 SVT Cobra R and the 2004 Tiger Racing Mustang.

Japanese Cars

Advantage: GT for PSP
Reason: Most of those 400+ cars Gran Turismo has that Forza doesn't come in the form of highly specific Japanese special editions. If you're looking for a 2002 Nissan Fairlady Z with the Z33 option wheel instead of the regular wheel you're SOL with Forza 3. There's also a better historical collection of Japanese cars with GT for PSP, which offers classics like the 1973 Nissan 2000GT-R.

Italian Cars

Advantage: Forza 3
Reason: There are only a few Ferraris and Lamborghinis in GT for PSP, giving a clear advantage to Forza 3 with its stable of classic and modern Ferraris including the Tafel Racing F430GT and 1964 Ferrari GTO. Gran Turismo does have a better collection of Alfa Romeos though...

European Cars

Advantage: Toss-up
Reason: As much as we love the RUF-tuned Porsches, the continued lack of a Porsche vehicle in the Gran Turismo series and its inclusion in the Forza series already gives Forza a leg-up. On the flipside, the GT series has an entire host of Alpines, Citroëns and other special models lacking in Forza 3. The advantage depends on your personal preferences.

Racing Cars

Advantage: Forza 3
Reason: Though you can find some extreme race versions of very specific cars ( like the 1999 Citroën Xsara Rally Car) in GT for PSP, unless you're a rally fiend the racing cars in Forza 3 will appeal more to the modern racing fan. The number of ALMS/Le Mans cars in Forza 3 is far superior. The lack of an R10/R15 in GT for PSP is a glaring omission. The one exception to this is in rallying, where GT for PSP has a clear advantage.

Australian Cars

Advantage:Forza 3
Reason: Only Forza comes with a slate of Australian V8 Supercars, which feeds our need to race Holdens against FG Falcons in an Outback race-to-the-death. At least Gran Turismo has one Falcon FG.

Odd Cars

Advantage: GT for PSP
Reason: Because of the quantity of cars in Gran Turismo, you get some truly wonderful cars Forza didn't have space for. Can you say 1988 Volvo 240 GLT Estate)? We love racing unique rides you don't normally find in racing games. How does the 1998 Taurus SHO match up to the DeLorean S2? Inquiring minds want to know. What about a non-SRT10 Dodge Ram?

Photo of Volvo Wagon from GT4 as there is no press screen of Volvo from PSP available yet.

Crappy Cars

Advantage: Forza 3
Reason: This is not exactly a category you want to win. Whereas the crappiest car in Gran Turismo for PSP is arguably the still awesome Daihatsu MOVE CX '95, Forza includes no less than a Chevy Aveo5... LT! Why, with only 400 cars, did such a crapbox end up in the game?

Conclusion

Advantage: Forza 3
Reason: If you're a JDM nut who doesn't care about Aussie Supercars, classic Ferraris or American muscle you'll be unimpressed by the number of Suzuki kei cars in Forza 3 and should opt for Gran Turismo PSP. But if you're less impressed by total numbers than you are by attention to detail you'll love the great cars of Forza Motorsport 3, which is why it has the advantage. When (if) GT5 comes it'll likely have so many cars it will warp our feeble little minds. Our advice? Get both.

<![CDATA[New High-Res Gran Turismo 5 Shots Reveal Ferrari 458, Crash Damage]]> The latest deluge of images from perennially forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 show off the Ferrari 458 Italia and LP 560-4 going through the digital paces. We also get a first look at some realistically-rendered rally car crash damage. Ooh!

Once we get past the eye-candy in these images, we're immediately struck by a burning sense of annoyance. It was only last Friday when game creator Kazunori Yamauchi announced GT5 would be yet again delayed, this time all the way until March of 2010, now it would seem they're dropping images to distract from that fact. The whole thing is starting to feel more like a protracted PR hustle than an actual lead up to the release of a flagship game for the PS3. Here's a recommendation for Polyphony: instead of endlessly hyping glossy rendered photos and news of game content, just get down to the business of finishing the damn game. It's getting tiresome. OK, /rant. [GTPlanet]

<![CDATA[Gran Turismo 5 Coming in March, At Earliest]]> Gran Turismo 5 won't be coming out until March of 2010 in Japan, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi announced at a press conference yesterday. This after almost a year of Sony saying the game will be out in 2009.

The next edition in the Gran Turismo line was announced at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo, at which time the developers claimed they had already been working on it for four years in an effort to include every car in the world. The latter now just seems like ambitious hype; the former, if true, is just sad.

No release date was claimed at the game's announcement, but during interviews in the summer of 2008, Yamauchi said the game wouldn't be coming out until late 2009. Sony and Yamauchi had been sticking to this rough date in interviews and press materials until yesterday. As expected as the announcement of more waiting may be, it's still disappointing for fanboys — particularly as the demo for Forza Motorsport 3 is on Xbox Live already, right on time. [GTPlanet]

<![CDATA[The Real Mercedes SLS AMG In Gran Turismo 5]]> When we showed you pictures of the Mercedes SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5, those were not in-game photos, but rather over-photoshopped real photos. We now have both for comparison below.

Which is more realistic?

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the highlight of the 2009 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main, will soon be delighting video game fans the world over. The gullwing model is being featured in the latest version of the PlayStation®3 (PS3TM) game Gran Turismo®5, in which it is expected to excite gamers with its breathtaking performance.
The most exciting car for the most exciting game. In the new Gran Turismo®5 video game, exclusively for PlayStation®3, gaming fans and car enthusiasts alike will be able to enjoy an intense and interactive driving experience at the wheel of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in full HD quality thanks to an extremely realistic rendering. Drivers of the SLS AMG can look forward to taking part in thrilling high speed races on a variety of different race tracks, including the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, while competing against other vehicles from the super sports car segment.
For an emotionally appealing and realistic reproduction of the vehicle from different camera angles, the game designers and engineers from Polyphony Digital Inc. have digitised the new gullwing model using elaborate video scans. But it is not just the visual aspects of the game which are a delight: the in-game performance virtually matches the real performance of the SLS AMG on the race track.
will be a fantastic experience," explains Yamauchi, who is in addition both Senior Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and President of Polyphony Digital Inc.
Gran Turismo®5
Developed by Polyphony Digital Inc. exclusively for the PlayStation® family of products, the Gran Turismo® series is not only one of the world's best-selling video games, having clocked up sales of more than 52 million copies, but thanks to its impressive true-to-life detail and realistic vehicle handling it also represents the absolute benchmark among fans. Gran Turismo® , the series' next iteration, is currently in development exclusively for PS3TM and latest information on Gran Turismo was unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show (24 – 27 September 2009).

<![CDATA[It's Gran Turismo 5 Versus Forza Motorsport 3 In Dueling Ferrari Italia Tributes]]> It seems Ferrari asked both Polyphony Digital and Turn 10 to show their new supercar in Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3, respectively. Compare the two vids to each other and to our live shots below.

Polyphony's version is definitely more a lingering look at the new Ferrari, which hasn't always been a part of Gran Turismo. Conversely, including Ferrari was a big deal for Forza in its early days, but they haven't always gotten the legendary Italian cars quite right, with early screenshots of the game earning criticism for strangely long-nosed Enzos. Will Turn 10 get the Italia right?

Here's what the car looks like in the metal.

And here's Turn 10's effort at linking the new Italia to previous Modena icons.

<![CDATA[GTbyCITROËN Concept Does Tourist Thing On GT5 London Street Circuit]]> If you've ever been to London, you'll recognize every place in this photoset, taken when the GTbyCITROËN concept car hit the streets recreating a course from Gran Turismo 5 and generally doing the tourist thing.

The GTbyCITROËN is the sting ray inspired stunner which debuted at the Paris Motor Show after its digital unveil as a car in Playstation's Gran Turismo 5. It made the rounds at all the famous London hot spots like any tourist does, and no-doubt got stuck in the hideous central London traffic. The car will be making its formal UK debut when it takes a spin at the Goodwood Festival of Speed July 3-5, also known as that weekend's happiest place on Earth.

CAPITAL THRILLS: GTbyCITROËN CONCEPT TURNS GAMING FANTASY INTO LONDON REALITY

Citroën's stunning concept supercar, the GTbyCITROËN, took to the streets of central London on Tuesday (23/06) to recreate part of the 'street circuit' featured in Gran Turismo® – the PLAYSTATION®3 driving game which the GTbyCITROËN was designed for.

Taking in some of the Capital's most famous landmarks, the virtual-turned-reality supercar swapped pixels for Piccadilly as it swept through the world famous circus, toured Regent Street, rounded Trafalgar Square and cruised down the Mall past Buckingham Palace.

The result of a unique partnership between Citroën and Polyphony Digital Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., creators of the Gran Turismo game series, the GTbyCITROËN concept measures nearly five metres long (4.96m) and just over a metre high (1.09m) with an impressive supercar design sporting wide air intakes, rear air-diffuser, horizontal LED headlamps, gull wing doors and diamond-effect 21inch aluminium wheels. Inside the cabin offers a refined racing experience with copper, steel and black leather finishes combined with hi-tech racing controls.

The GTbyCITROËN will be making its UK show debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (3-5 July) and will climb the famous 1.16-mile Goodwood Hill as part of the Sunday Times Supercar Run.

<![CDATA[First Gran Turismo Mobile Footage, Stills Look Stellar]]> When the first details emerged for Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo Mobile, we were infinitely curious how the little guy compared to its much larger brother, GT5. Check out this gameplay footage and decide for yourself.

According to the Gran Turismo creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, GT Mobile will feature all of the tracks from GT4 with an updated car list to include 800 semi-customizable cars. Yamauchi has said that they are trying to keep the game under 1Gb due to the internal memory rating of 16Gb on the PSP Go and will be available both as a download for buyers of the new UMD-less PSP Go as well as a traditional UMD for existing PSP owners. It sounds like we might just have to get back into mobile gaming come October, that is, if Yamauchi isn't pulling our leg. Check out the screen shots below.

<![CDATA[Gran Turismo 5, Gran Turismo Mobile To Deal HD-Powered Blow To Forza]]> Hot and bothered by yesterday's look at Forza 3? Polyphony Digital's no slacker, evidenced by this über-slick look at the retail version of Gran Turismo 5 and Gran Turismo Mobile.

Live at the E3 Expo, Kazunori Yamauchi released two new puzzle pieces to his highly-polished Gran Turismo series. The first? Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3, a direct competitor to Turn 10 Studios just-released Forza Motorsport 3. Packed with active weather effects, night racing and damage modeling, Yamauchi promises GT5 will be the most realistic Gran Turismo game yet. The addition of both NASCAR and WRC licenses is an interesting surprise and will likely bring fans of those racing series games to a unified GT racing platform. A release date will be announced later today.

But the biggest surprise was Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital finally releasing the long-awaited Gran Turismo Mobile for the Sony PSP portable system. Packed with 800 semi-customizable cars and 35 tracks as well as the ability to trade and race with others over the PSP's ad-hoc connectivity. GT Mobile looks to be the overall winner of the two by offering true portable Gran Turismo gameplay and will be released in October. [gtplanet]

<![CDATA[Audi R8 Meets Gran Turismo 5 On The Nürburgring]]> Audi has taken its super-Bruce R8 to the Nurburgring to make some direct comparisons between real-world track driving and GT5: Prologue driving as well as letting loose some secrets on the upcoming non-glorified-demo GT5.

GTPlanet is also featuring an interview with Gran Turismo creator, Kazunori Yamauchi in which he reveals that the upcoming Playstation 3 racer will feature both active weather effects, night racing and the previously confirmed, damage modeling. Expect the virtual racer, Gran Turismo 5, to be the largest and most realistic entry in the series yet with a release on the PS3 expected later this year. Until then, we'll have to get our grubby hands on our overpriced copy of GT5: Prologue. [via Audi, GTplanet]

<![CDATA[Gran Turismo Creator Can Drive Real Cars, Too]]> The mastermind behind the Gran Turismo series has proven that he can handle real cars as well as he took the 2009 Nissan GT-R for a joy ride. Not only could the game's creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, handle the famed Nurburgring track, but he did so with it wet. Yamauchi even cites his familiarity with the track from the video game to help his real life driving. I doubt Yamauchi beat the 7:29 mark on the same ring, but he manages to keep it on the slippery track. See, Mom, video games are good for something. Check out the video above for the clips of him driving and follow the link to see the entire clip that features interviews about Godzilla and more. [CarScoop]

<![CDATA[Confirmed: GT5, Prologue To Get Damage Modeling]]> Kazanori Yamauchi told us that Polyphony Digital were getting close to finally including deformation, or damage modeling, in the Gran Turismo series, and we finally have some confirmation. Yamauchi recently said that the series will finally be implementing the long-awaited feature in the release of Gran Turismo 5 and it may even be available as a software update for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue as early as this fall. GT5 Prologue is still slated for an April 15 release in the United States. It's already available in Europe.

It's good to see the automakers warm to the idea of kids across the world smashing the hell out of their cars. It may not sound like a feasible idea at first, but it adds a completely new level of realism to the GT series that is already pushing the realistic boundaries of racing sims. [IGN via Kotaku]

<![CDATA[Sony Welcomes European GT5 Prologue Release With Pit Lane Party]]> Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is still a couple weeks away for us Yankee Doodle Dandies, but our European counterparts get a crack at the game now, as the demo is currently available for European PlayStation 3 consoles. To commemorate the release of the demo, Sony threw a pretty big party in London and had quite the repertoire of vehicles representing as well.

Sony brought in Ferraris, a yellow Lotus and Godzilla himself to an underground car park in London decorated like a real pit lane. The party included a live DJ, bars and, of course, arcade-style simulators running the demo of the highly anticipated game. A competition was also held looking for the top driver. Drew Forster took home the prize that included a trophy and two tickets to the Le Mans 24-hour race this summer. We're great at games, so we're sad we missed it. [Reuters]

<![CDATA[Carmakers Warm To "Damage Modeling" In Games]]> The final hurdle of realism may be crossed in Gran Turismo sooner than expected. Kazanori Yamauchi, the creator of the famed series, recently said:

We've had a lot of discussions with the manufacturers and although at the beginning they hated the idea of deformation, now they're slowly coming around to it. We've still got a few to convince, but we will. Expect deformation in the very near future: very, very soon.
And by "deformation" he of course means damage modeling, i.e. enabling the cars to show the evidence of wrecks, rollovers, and collisions. Believe it or not, the likes of Porsche and Ferrari aren't too keen on amateur drivers smashing the hell out of their glorious automobiles, even in a virtual realm.

Gran Turismo is one of the more realistic driving simulators available, but without damage modeling, it's still simply a video game. If its developers hope to get it to that next level, they need to convince manufacturers to greenlight the results of inadvertent mayhem. Even though it pains me to see amazing cars smashed to hell by our gaming-deprived editors, there is something thrilling about knowing my driving fuck ups have real consequences. [Kotaku] (Image)

<![CDATA[Logitech PS3 Driving Wheel Simulates Over, Understeer]]> Gran Turismo 5 may still be a little ways off, but Logitech is already jumping to have an official steering wheel available for this long-anticipated PlayStation 3 title. It was developed by Logitech and Polyphony Digital, and includes a lot of features that will tighten the trousers of any driving enthusiast.

The force-feedback system is capable of simulating oversteer, understeer and traction loss. It includes paddle shifters and a standard stick shift. Probably one of the better features is the 24-position adjustment dial on the wheel. This little red doodad will allow you to adjust brake bias, TCS and damper settings on the fly. The wheel will be available in May for $150. [Driving Force GT via Uncrate]

<![CDATA[Gran Turismo 5 Prologue Video Preview]]> The most beautiful and highly anticipated next-generation racing simulator is inching its way towards completion. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is the name of the game, and we've got a preview. "Prologue" means it's not the full game. Actually, it's like a glorified demo that will cost $40, include 5 tracks, 16-player online racing and more than 30 cars. Prologue is slated for an April 17 release date on the PlayStation 3, with the full GT5 game coming sooner or later. At least by the time PlayStation Ocho rolls around. [Techeblog]

<![CDATA[Gran Turismo 5 Trailer Hits The Web, Web Too Slow to Keep Up]]>
The Gran Turismo 5 trailer has emerged and we couldn't be more excited (though, we still haven't shelled out enough dough for a PlaySation 3). And while we can enjoy other racing simulators and motorsports games, we've been hooked since the Mazda Demio braking test in the original Gran Turismo for the PS1. In the trailer we get a mixture of vehicles (including a new Nissan GT-R), some track shots and one wicked soundtrack (no offense Cardigans).

What we know about the GT5 is that it's super realistic looking, it'll have the Nissan GT-R, the track from Top Gear and us scrounging for a few hundred bucks.
