All the Chrysler products they're going to buy will be U.S. Mail Jeeps.

I'd hope, anyway. Maybe they assign the Sebrings to low-level intern types.

Great, so I can look forward to government employees driving like d*cks in unsold Tahoes rather than usual Malibu?

    Uncle Sam

    Has a plan

    to save detroit

before the shit does hit the fan

    They'll buy some cars

    For the Stars and Bars

And to keep the factories open

    For another few hours

    It seems to be

    A mere pittance to me

But it's better to get a new car

Than to waste it on bonuses at A-I-G

Are there still American cars made in Detroit? I thought they all came from Mexico or Canada.

"The $285 million is part of of the economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year by Congress, which budgeted $300 million for vehicle upgrades."

The other $15 million will be spent on the GAO Christmas Party.

I can't even fathom how much it would piss people off if they bought Toyotas/Hondas instead.

There is a downside to this: Even more flooded domestic used car market. Maybe I can finally get that deal I've always wanted on a bullet-proof Yukon Denali.

I've been saying this for a while now... order a new fleet of hybrid delivery vehicles for the USPS. That's where the hybrid technology would have the most impact to efficiency and it would provide the manufacturer one giant fleet that could provide R&D data.

@TurboBrick: Better idea: get rid of the USPS. No more no-bid contracts, no more junk mail, packages delivered by one of the competent and efficient private organizations, and the rest electronic.

    Too soon?

The government's going to be needing new cars and trucks sometime, so it helps everyone out to front load their purchasing. This may help to keep more factories open and folks employed. Even if the profit margins are small on the buy, all the manufacturers will benefit from the additional cash flow, not to mention their suppliers.

I wonder how many Volts this will work out to?
